The best example of what this video is all about can be found on a conventional ductless mini split. So many people call the small insulated line the "liquid line," and you have to nicely correct them. "No, that's the saturated line," a liquid line doesn't have to be insulated. The EEV is also in the outdoor unit. That's why, in a low charge situation, you will see the saturated line start to freeze first. On a ductless mini split, the saturated line can be quite long. Works to the same extent with a VRF using a branch box. The eev is in the branch box, and the saturated line goes to the indoor FCU. These types of equipment, along with chillers, make the phase change accessible to the tech, where as in a split system...it like you said...its very short. The concepts are universal....no matter what you are working on

I was told it was called the expansion line. Like jason commented in mini splits the eev is at the condenser and the line after the condenser to the fcu is the expansion line. Wonder what other names people refer to this pipe.

Never heard the term two phase in any of the formal training i have had over the last 40 years. I have been formaIy trained in Centrifugal and absorption equipment and cooling tower theory. I have understood the spuds off the evaporator to be what you are describing. Where did you find the phrase “Two Phase”? Your are correct, it does have liquid and vapor at its flash point. Love your content. Keep up the great work.

The training I've been to for a few different OEMs has referenced it as the two phase line. I've also read some IOM overtime that used the same terminology but I couldn't tell you which one it was off hand.

Heard it called the 80/20 line, saturated line, flash line, expansion line, and several others I can't recall. Personally I'm partial to expansion line, since it contains the refrigerant that just came through the expansion valve.

My HVAC teacher called it a ‘No Name Line.’
