- Things to think about when putting handles on pieces. It’s all about form and function. It needs to look attractive and it needs to function well. Too small of a handle and it will break easily and look funny. Too large and not shaped nicely looks clunky and ugly.
I have several die sizes I use with my extruder. I use the extruder as a starting point and then shape and pull the handle from there. I could pull from a lump of clay but have found for consistency and ease, pulling a handle from an extruded ribbon is best.
