As a player of ARR onward, it's crazy to think about a legend like the late Louisoux who once was alive in 1.0 but now you can only hear about them. Real life people who played 1.0 were there though. That's what makes Binding Coil so special.
Very rarely do writers get the opportunity to tell the classic tale of the heroes rising to countless challenges, chosen by a powerful good to unite the world against an oppressive threat, only for everything to fail and for the world to end apocalyptically during the crucial ultimate battle. You don't get the opportunity often to write the bad end and see it rendered in beautiful and terrifying detail, but FFXIV managed to put itself in a position that gave the writers the opportunity to do just that! Makes for some very rare and inspired storytelling.
The writers were given free reign to do whatever they wanted with the story of 1.0 when it was decided they would rebuild it. There were only certain conditions that had to be met for the story like I think Dalamud falling and such. Otherwise it was a free for all for the writing team. That's how they were able to put out such an amazing story.
The idea of all these far away lands in the early days of a realm reborn were so fascinating to me. Places that existed but barred us from entry . It was like knowing was something just beyond the horizon but always unattainable.
It'd honestly be amazing if they could do like a movie version of 1.0 or something. Although they do explain most things in ARR and onward, there's still some things where you're just confused and feel disconnected.
Just rewatched this and it's crazy how far back some of the story beats go. Like knowing the greater significance of the starshower in 1.0 after the same phenomenon repeats over the Crystarium on the First in Shadowbringers.
To be fair, a _lot_ of newer lore was retroactively applied, rather than planned all along. By and large, most of Shadowbringers and Endwalker were only hashed out during Stormblood.
@@justinlee790 The major story arc was, as I understand, proposed and approved when Yoshida took over for ARR. @@anthonydelfino6171 The story arc is what I'm referring to: Shadowbringers and Endwalker, and the lore revelations and major storybeats therein, were only really thought out during Stormblood's development cycle. Beforehand they'd established certain plot points that would stay hugely relevant (biggest being the reveal that the world was Sundered into 14 pieces in Heavensward's post-launch patch storyline), but until Stormblood they never really had a solid conception of where the overall story was supposed to go: especially the role of the Ascians, which prior to the planning out of ShB/EW were still hugely up in the air. I believe there were even plans to tie them into adapted Ivalice lore, since that's where their namesakes are from. Kind of a big giveaway is that a lot of what the Ascians say in ARR and even HW don't really... make that much sense retroactively. Especially Lahabrea's big speech about how there needs to be balance between Light and Darkness, and how Hydaelyn is killing the world and needs to be destroyed before the laws of nature unravel. Credit where credit is due, the FF14 writers are really good at looking back to previous content's characters and story threads and referencing them to enforce a strong feeling of continuity where the Player goes "Aha!", but ultimately they didn't actually have a complete plan from the beginning of ARR. Heavensward and Stormblood were pretty much self-contained stories, and it was only after Stormblood's MSQ where things went according to a broader story arc plan. That being said, they seem to be continuing to look further ahead. I believe yoshi p has said that they've created a rough outline for several years' worth of story in the aftermath of Endwalker.
I really want an RPG release of 1.0's story! And when (in an ideal world that would be if) the current game ends, we need a single player RPG release of it as well so people can replay the story in its full glory with graphics that the MMO couldn't accommodate!

It's cool, but ARR also has cool scenes like Ultima Weapon fight with the Primals (which Gaius joins as well) and the attack on the Sahagin summoning of Leviathan.
I love this. a 1.0 player and lore fanatic, I knew all this stuff, but we always receive it in pieces, and never in chronological order, so it's really cool to hear it all layed out at one time, in the order that it occurred.

spoilers from shadowbringers, dont read if you still havent been there yet ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... holy shit so they really did already set even in 1.0 that haedelyn was indeed a primal. as stated around 15:45 when ifrit wasnt able to temper the adventurers with the echo and assumed were already enthralled to another primal. which in 5.0 is revealed as indeed haedelyn being a primal and her gifts to her chosen the echo which makes people with the echo immune to tempering.
The video helped to deepen my love for the game, at times i didnt know what was happening and there was always a feeling of disconnect. but i think this helped close the gap. thanks alot man
Currently playing through NG+ and just got to Stormblood (I'm slow, but I'm addicted to hunting fashion and rping with friends) and I've been itching to know the details before ARR (which I had played through on an alt, as ARR at this time is not available through NG+). I'm really invested and interested in the lore and what all happened during 1.0 leading up to 2.0 and I'm really happy I found this video and so appreciative of you that it exists. Thank you for sharing this for those of us who weren't around for 1.0.
Thank you for sharing this. I didn't start playing until Stormblood, but all the echoes of 1.0 are still there. And you have some cutscenes in here I hadn't seen before.
Thank you so much for this. I missed out on 1.0 and I know it had it's problems but wow... to be there when Dalamund finally came down... must have been something else. A once in a lifetime experience that came from the original team really f*cking up.
This video was very good at summarizing pre 2.0, I've been looking for a video that can explain all the events well, and you succeeded, thank you! I now understand the storyline much better.
I started when they came out with Stormblood so I really have no idea of the cutscenes that played when I created my first character. Then when I got to Mor Dhona I had no idea why the sky is weird or even who the heck Midgardsormr is... Except we fight him in a dungeon in ARR because of some prophecy. They even kept talking about Liousox and with hardly any explanation as to who he is. They really needed better explanations for players who started in 2.0.
With Midgardsormr that's understandable, although with Louisoix most of what needed to be told was placed into the story of the Binding Coils of Bahamut. Of course though, since that raid doesn't have a proper Normal Mode for story reasons nor Roulette queues like the rest, very few people actually run them outside of unsynched Party Finders.
@@heyaheyo1420 I feel as if they draw upon the base storyline far too often into current content for that to be completely so, but gameplay wise? Certainly. Lore wise, however, they still carry on and resolve plots from 1.0 surprisingly often if you look closely enough. Granted I’m not sure if this is purely out of homage or tribute to 1.0 veterans, but the frequency gives me my doubts.
@@heyaheyo1420 It's there cause the coil raid was deemed too hard and back then there was no easy/savage mode. And up to this day they haven't figured out how to make it work so it's not made mandatory which is still weird from a lore perspective.
This video and it’s commentary are superbly done! For me, the adventures in Gridania leading up to and then going to the waking sands for the first time were other worldly. As broken as some parts of the game were, the MSQ was a dream to walk through. The story telling, the writing, the music and cutscenes, phenomenally done. Thank you for this amazing video, cheers!
Watching the cutscene at 18:00 is making me wild out, look how good that animation is considering when it came out compared to a lot of the static cutscenes in ARR.
From what I heard... the engine they used in 1.0 allowed for more complex cutscenes, but also wasn't optimized for a big game like an MMO. That caused many of the problems that made 1.0 fail, like a lot of lag, frame rate drops and very weird map layouts. The new engine they used for 2.0 takes care of all those issues, however the cutscenes are not as nice. It was a good trade, I think
I played 1.0 for a little bit, but gave it up due to all of the issues the game had at release. My mind was just blown. I've been playing ARR since it came out, and never really thought to go back and see what happened. Thanks for taking your time to tell the tale. Definitely worth every second. Cheers.
12:35 This cutscene takes place in the form of an echo, afterwards returning back to Travenchet stealing the horn. As of patch 5.2, makes me wonder if this "starshower" was constructed by Travenchet the same way as Elidibus does on the First. Also find it strange that both Y'shtola and Sthalmann (now Rostnsthal) both had the same Echo flashback of the Starshower in 1.0, assuming this to be retconned.
Thanks for The great content. I had played 1.0 but not nearly enough to do all of the story content, and I'm just coming back to the game now, eager for getting caught up what happened before a realm reborn.
This was a VERY well done synopsis. I honestly didn't know that the game was so in depth, but you did a great job explaining everything I needed to know as someone who only picked up the game at the start of A Realm Reborn.

Thanks for this! I had always been curious about exactly what happened in 1.0's story! :) I feel like a few missing pieces of the puzzle are there now, but, now, I also realize there are still a few loose ends that need to be tied.
wow. having started the game 11 years after it's initial launch, it's details covered in this that make me understand the impact of ARR much more. while i enjoyed it, i do feel like i didn't *know* the scions and their history (especially the meaning of that broken staff) as well as anyone who played during 1.0, and always wanted answers to what happened before the calamity. so, thank you for this wonderful video that still holds up today.
First of all please allow me to thank you for this amazing composition of backstory and a job well done telling it in a way that didn't put me to sleep! It was actually pleasant listening! Having said that... I have been a player of Final Fantasy since it's birth on the NES and am very critical of it's progression. After 7 / 8 I lost a lot of interest and felt the game was losing sight of what Final Fantasy was at it's core. To this day I am still not very happy with the way the battle systems have changed into more of an action-style but who am I to judge in a world where people want more fast-paced thrills and less depth. Final Fantasy 14, however, has brought me back to this franchise. While the battle system obviously cannot be side-view RTAB it still manages to somehow hold true to how a battle should be in a Final Fantasy game. What really brings me back is the massive amount of nostalgia they managed to incorporate into the story. From the primals, to quirky bosses like Gilgamesh and Ultros and even Matoya herself from Final Fantasy 1. I find myself nearly in tears as my childhood comes surging back and to top it off... the music is absolutely breathtaking and fits perfectly into every scene. This is the perfect video to enthrall new blood and Final Fantasy enthusiasts alike to the game and I hope you keep up the good work! I'm not sure about you but my biggest wish is to one day get to go to a Distant Worlds concert and perhaps meet the legend himself, Nobou Uematsu! Once again thank you and may the Echo forever guide you!
Wow this was well worth the watch and thanks for helping me remember and understand it fully as the time stretch in game makes you not realize the scope of things...

holy shit so they really did already set even in 1.0 that haedelyn was indeed a primal. as stated around 15:45 when ifrit wasnt able to temper the adventurers with the echo and assumed were already enthralled to another primal. which in 5.0 is revealed as indeed haedelyn being a primal and her gifts to her chosen the echo which makes people with the echo immune to tempering.
Incredible, super easy to listen and follow along, great storytelling. So many questions answered, thanks!
I do realise this vid is a little older than yesterday, but thank you none the less for the effort :)
6 years later and not a single dislike! What an amazing video!
The video helped to deepen my love for the game, at times i didnt know what was happening and there was always a feeling of disconnect. but i think this helped close the gap. thanks alot man
Didn't even mention The Warrior of Light himself, Hildibrand Manderville, launching himself at Dalamud in an attempt to prevent it from falling..
I just wanna say that I absolute love what you are doing, I hope you don't stop doing. The lore in FFXIV is just great.
Coming back to this after finishing 5.5 and mind BLOWN by some of the set up here.
Thank you for sharing this for those of us who weren't around for 1.0.
now where’s the 3 hour version going into all the nifty little details
Thank you for sharing this. I didn't start playing until Stormblood, but all the echoes of 1.0 are still there. And you have some cutscenes in here I hadn't seen before.
Watching this in summer 2019 like... I see the WoL in the last cutscene from 1.0 and I'm like... Ardbert... Lammitt... Randa-Rae.... lol...
Because they are shards of us. Similiar stories happened on all the shards. You forget the 6th though.
poor randa
Agreed. I had no idea who he was.
they do that because Square wants to distance themselves far from what FF14 was before ARR.
Thanks a lot! I've looked for info about 1.0 story before, but that's the best one I've seen so far!
@@faelgb1 They used a modified version of FF13’s engine from my understanding so it looked great but wasn’t optimal to play in
Fantastic! I came here because of State of the Realm, really glad I did! I've got quite a few vids to watch now. Thanks Ethys, keep up the great work!
Chris Kirk Thank you! I hope you enjoy the channel :)
I played 1.0 for a little bit, but gave it up due to all of the issues the game had at release. My mind was just blown. I've been playing ARR since it came out, and never really thought to go back and see what happened. Thanks for taking your time to tell the tale. Definitely worth every second. Cheers.
Thanks for uploading this! As somebody who joined during the launch of ARR, I never got to see the majority of 1.0's story before this.
This is exactly the kind of lore I was looking for. Thank you!
I honestly didn't know that the game was so in depth, but you did a great job explaining everything I needed to know as someone who only picked up the game at the start of A Realm Reborn.
my girlfriend and I really love this game however she wasn't aware of the 1.0 story. showed her this and you bet we both loved it. great narration and wonderfully put together. makes her enjoy the story even more. I stayed up until 5 am watching some of your other videos. keep up the great work. see you in the. umbral zone
I only just got into the game a few months ago but the world has captivated me so much, I’m really glad stuff like this is around for players like me to see the build up to 2.0 and the origins of people like Minfillia
Just started playing and I love what you provided us from this video
Started playing just last year when Shadowbringers released so never knew much about the sequence leading to Dalamud falling and who’s Nael. Just cleared Ruby Weapon and UA-cam recommended this vid. Can’t thank you enough, Ethys. Very cool.
As someone who only started playing 2.0 THIS is AMAZING and it help to fill in a ton of gaps for me( since technically 2.0 + is set 5 years post 1.0. This helps me feel like it makes sense.
I started to play since 2.0. Thanks for explaining the lore from when it started. Nicely done!
That was fantastic!! I can't wait to watch the rest of your videos.
spectreshadow Thanks, enjoy the channel!
Thank you for making this. Your voice is awesome for narrating.
This was a great watch! Only started playing mid 2019 or so, and really wanted to learn of the context for the early game
Thanks for taking the time to do this dude :) was entertaining as.
I played the game and finally beat all of ARR just so I can watch this video!
8 years later and I just want to say THANKYOU Ethys Asher :)
Just started playing FF14 and your video is simply amazing in enhancing my understanding of the lore. Thanks and INSTASUBBED!
awesome. thanks for making this. as someone who started in ARR I was always wondering about the missing back story.
Thanks for this! Yep, I was there since the alpha testing of 1.0. Nice video retrospective. Gonna share it with some people I've been trying to explain the story to.
This is great to rewatch from time to time. My memories are fading as the years pass...
Fantastic synopsis! Thank you for making
HOLY SHIT 12:40 MAKE SO MUCH MORE SENSE AFTER 5.3. GODDAMN THAT'S SOME LONG FORESHADOWING
I recently finished heavens' ward and started reading about the plot before ARR. I'm still reading stuff, but this video was very much appreciated!
I'll probably try and do the binding coils of Bahamut next.
i always hear that gameplay was crap but if there were to be any remake of 1.0 i would definitely play it. i just started a lil over a month ago and i feel like ive missed so much. thanks for the vid.
thanks mate, I really wanted to fill the gaps in story since i never played 1.0. While i'd still love to see the events with me own eyes, this video been a lot of help =)
Lol like every single bit of Gaius's dialog in the cutscene where he fights the future scions is straight up a direct Darth Vader quote.
This was extremely well made
I know this video is pretty old, but thank you for making this! I recently got into FFXIV:ARR a few months ago and was trying to explain the story to my friends a little last month. They didn't understand me at all, but this should definitely help!
Thank you for this. As a relatively new-ish player, this video game excellent context to the effects prior to ARR. And those cutscenes.....wow. Very sad I missed this at the time.
This gives me a bard in a tavern story telling vibe
Cutscenes in 1.0 were so damn good.
Cut scenes in every part of the game are good
Ethys i love your content. And that song has giving me goose bumps since it rained down back ever so long ago. Much love from myself and my free company Final Ragnarok (Jenova)
Fantastic quality, it's basically professionally done. I don't know if you'd be up to it but a quick-ish recap of each patch from 2.X and onwards would be pretty damn cool. Subbed!
Started FFXIV when Stormblood was released. This is a well thought out and condensed explanation of 1.x Thanks
Like a lot of people I started towards the end of HW And had no idea that any of this was part of the OG story and was playable. Thank you for sharing.
This is such a great video. I need something like this for ffxi
A fantastic and illuminating narration beautifully presented, thank you. Subscribed.
Great video can't wait for 2.55 and hevansward story
TIL Y'shtola is The One.
wow the 70-80 alchemist quest makes waaaaay more sense now
This game has some great backstory even without 1.0. Square Enix really has the chance to build something awesome.
curious as to what your thoughts are now with how successful they've been!
After the events of EW, I too would *love* to know what you think of this whole journey
Thanks for this! I had always been curious about exactly what happened in 1.0's story! :) I feel like a few missing pieces of the puzzle are there now, but, now, I also realize there are still a few loose ends that need to be tied.
Knowing all this gives a totally new perspective to my ARR experience : o
wow. having started the game 11 years after it's initial launch, it's details covered in this that make me understand the impact of ARR much more. while i enjoyed it, i do feel like i didn't *know* the scions and their history (especially the meaning of that broken staff) as well as anyone who played during 1.0, and always wanted answers to what happened before the calamity. so, thank you for this wonderful video that still holds up today.
Thank you for this!! Only recently started playing so I had no idea what the 1.0 story was.
Many thanks for making this video, it was very informative and expertly narrated!
Been playing off and on since launch (all caught up to 3.2 story in game) but felt like I was missing a big part of the lore. (Big fan of lore in most mmos I play like guild wars and wow) you're channel is awesome keep it up.
Thanks for this! FF14 5.3 is great but I was still confused by some story points.
