This episode was fantastic! The production value that you get is incredible for being a one-man-band out there. I love that you show yourself walking into the barn with the huge sheet of plywood, and then you move the camera, and are walking in the garage with it. As much as I loved Norm Abrams and Bob Villa, they often made things look deceptively simple, as if huge sheets of plywood just magically appear in your shop, and that you always have the perfect thing to say all the time. You losing your train of thought, makes me see that you are human, and it gives me more inspiration to get out in my shop and make some more challenging things.
I am Brazilian and I am in love with joinery, hobbyist by nature, but in reality I work with Information Technology. I really liked his work and you are to be congratulated for professional efficiency displayed in the video.
I just recently purchased a "fixer upper" home and with that has come a lot of woodwork and construction. Now that all of that has slowed down we're looking at a bed build and this is right in line with what we were thinking. Great work and thanks for posting this video!
Very thorough and helpful construction and stylish Shed Plans! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcLVQopTIucrxiVRQA0khLGQEnDVKCSMG Numerous examples of different shed styles . Other may feature more styles, but this was the best Ryan's Shed Plans I found that gave a good sampling and a lot of good information about actually constructing a shed.
I used to be more than happy to find this video channel-channel.I needed to thanks in your time for this glorious learn!! I undoubtedly enjoying every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to take a look at new stuff you video post.
Great Video, I want to build a bed for my daughter and I think your idea with the storage is a good one using the underneath space Looking forward to the finish.
Parabéns!!! Um trabalho bonito e fácil. Obrigado por ter informado as medidas pois assim qualquer um poderá fazer esse trabalho tão bonito. Por favor continue a compartilhar seus projetos conosco.
Very nice! I've seen versions of the bed where people had drawers and/or cabinet doors. I even saw one where instead of a box in the middle at the end, they had a footboard with hidden hinges so it could flip up & their kid could climb under. I'm going to look for part 2 next.
Nice work. I have plans for something similar in a queen size for my daughter's anniversary gift. The only difference is, instead of a cubby at the foot, I'm planning a storage box on casters since there will be a cedar chest to hide it.
I'm finishing up a project using oak plywood. I will be doing edge banding over the weekend. Also made a roll top feature. I wish I had more room to handle plywood sheets.
Hi Jon referred back to the bed video build series because i'm building several cabinets and remembered this build of yours, i mean what perfect instructional videos Jon, i would like to build this bed one day but for know just getting some tips on making cabinets and drawers keep up the beautiful work...
Great video John, platform beds are quite popular these days and it is SO much cheaper to build your own, then to shell out the cash for the retail price for any decent quality finished bed at the furniture stores. - I see a few others had the same question I did about not using any glue? My guess is you may want the ability to easily disassemble and reassemble the bed for moving AND/or, have the ability to easily repurpose the birch plywood if at some future date you wish to retire the platform bed....? I'll check back on Tuesday to find out.
Great job Jon!I built a platform bed last year for my daughter with drawers.I must say your design is much better! It never occurred to me too use plywood! You've got tons of storage space around your design and I love it!I'm assuming your plywood is birch?Thx for sharing!!Looking forward to part 2!
Jon, your workmanship is outstanding. I could watch videos of you making things from timber all day. These kinds of videos make me want to take this up as a job.
You're very welcome. Out of curiosity, where did you learn to do woodwork like this? I understand from some of your videos that you took shop class in school, but have you done an apprenticeship as well? Would someone be better off studying carpentry, or is it more specific to cabinet making? Is it perhaps something else entirely? It just seems like such an excellent skill to have, and one that would be equally as satisfying to develop as it is to have mastered. Thanks!
I made a bed very similar to this, for my son, from plans on another site. It took me a lot longer to finish than I thought it would. Space and time were issues too. I had the store cut the bigger pieces on the panel saw. That helped. I used maple. It is a very heavy/sturdy bed. I wish I watched this video then. It would have made it easier. Now my son is asking for a bigger bed. I'm trying to figure out a way to easily add some width/length to the bed to use a bigger mattress. I was thinking I could disassemble it, add a bigger cabinet at the foot and slats in the middle. He still likes his bed, but he has grown 6 inches in the last year or so. I don't want to build a whole new bed.
Nice work as usual Jon! Looks like there will be a nice hidden storage in the middle there too. Maybe not for your son, but if I were building this I'd try to figure a way to access that area for storing valuables and such.
Great timing. I just starting to design a twin platform bed for my son so hopefully this will give me insight and ideas. One thing I was thing to do was instead of a traditional headboard I was thinking about storage cubbies for his eyeglasses, phone and changer, including a built in power strip to avoid wires dangling all over the place. I'm kind of stuck on how to modularize it so in the event that it needs to be moved it can be taken apart. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did notice you didn't use glue, just screws. Any particular reason?
Love the videos, love the projects. Thanks. Being a young guy you can carry a 4 x 8 board across the yard. Me, I bought a big orange hand carry from H/D. Works great.
After getting this stuff few days ago, I could hardly put it down afterwards [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. There are lots of colorful pictures, with detailed descriptions of every step in the project. You will never miss your way using this plan. It was more than I expected.?
Turned out very nice.... As a beginner with woodworking I have a few questions..hopefully you or someone can chime in. 1. why did you not use glue? 2. why did you not cut dados for the shelves? 3. would it have been easier to cut the rabbit for the back on the table saw using a dado set? 4. are you going to put doors on storage so whatever is thrown down there is not visible
Answering #3 ,I would guess that because the top and bottom sheets are so long ,they would be a bit difficult to maneuver around the shop by yourself, especially without an outfeed table.Witch Jon uses his outfeed table as an assembly table Sewell,I believe. So its just just easier to bring the small router to the cabinet instead. That's my guess anyhow!;)
I am just starting the wood working stuff and was wundering how long it took you to build the bed? I have made a couple of picnic tables but want to expaned I am semi retired at 41 so am trying your idea with a few mods will get a web cam and that to make vidio's of what I build but in the mean time keep up the good work
Thanks! I'm going to build something like this for a "stadium seating" platform for our second couch in the living room. Subscribed, liked, commented. Keep putting out great vids!
Outstanding. IF I want this kind of bed and cannot do my own work who could build it for me? Will you do or have you done WINDOW BOXES with storage [like old fashioned hope chest or travel trunks? Nice video and work.
Hi Jon. Nice bed build. Also looking at a lot of your older art videos. I'm interested in your barn shop and studio because I'm thinking of purchasing a similar building as a tiny home. Any advice? A tour would be nice if you can find the time.
Awesome build. I have seen many vids about iron on edge banding but not one of them has ever said what setting the iron is on...Could you tell me what setting you use on the iron?
Hi Jon. I can't wait for this project to be completed! A couple of really dumb questions. Why didn't you use any glue. Wouldn't glue make it a lot stronger? Does that edge banding stay put? It seems so easy to put on and I can't help thinking that it will peel off over time. Cheers
I guess Jon needs to set the finished bed up in his son's room : carrying it in pièces will be a lot more convenient than carrying big sets of cabinets. Gluing will be done on the spot !
+DIY Creators Guys I found a website on which more then 16000 woodworking Projects and plans available I am learning so much on their. the website is *TopFineWoodworking .com* all you guys should try it..........

is there enough support down the middle of the bed so the mattress doesn't "bow" through it ? I was thinking that when the back of the cabinets went on, perhaps a rail either side with some timber slats set flush with the top ?
Only 6" of snow!? You should come to south western Ontario!! I'm curious as to your plan for the open centre section...I assume your using a box spring and leaving the centre open.
I am also wondering how the mattress is going to fit here. Eagerly waiting for the next part... please post it soon :) Great video. I have learnt many things from your videos.
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is an amazing book about wood working. I took several classes and completed a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is better than any book I worked out of during those courses. It includes useful photos and goes over almost everything.
Hi jon really nice work!.. I'm learning alot from you thanks for the videos. My question is by using plywood would the bed be marketable in your opinion?
If you don't mind explaining, could you tell me how you matched the rounded edges of the back pieces of the cubbies to the curved rabbid at each corner in the cubbies? Is there some sort of tool you use that makes a matching curve? I'm new to woodworking as you can assume, and I plan to build this bed on a larger scale.
Hi, i was surprised that you did not use a biscuit in between the 2 screws when you made the side"Pods" and no glue either. Was this so that it could be dismantled before delivery?
great job, as always. Question, the center of the bed frame, are you gonna fill it in or leave it open? I supposed the bed will cave in the middle if left open..
This is awesome. I subscribed and liked. One question, have you given out the dimensions for a queen size bedframe of this type before? I see a lot of people have asked for it, and that's what I would love to have! Thank you.
I am building a bed with a storage underneath it for file cabinets. But they are at an angle so you just put them in at a slant and the drawer pulls out. I am doing this partly for security. My mother had a table with shelves flat in the back for her files she could see and so did a lot of people who broke into our house while I was at school and she was at work. So I think if I make the drawer look more like a sofa bottom and the bed look like a sofa then I can hid the table behind the bed looks like the old fashioned wood back and sides that adjust to different heights so it could be a coffee table to a sofa or a desk to a seating area or a dining table with two sofa's on either side. Well I want it locked with a sort of lock that locks both sides with a round thing in the middle that will wedge then shut. So I know it will be a file cabinet bed desk coffee table sofa it just looks like a sofa is all that is in the room. Someone running through the room with little time might miss it. My next project is a book shelf in the room where you can hide guns on the side and in between the shelves and also paper work which is important to my mother. That way they can just imagine it is a book shelf built in and not know how to unlock it with magnates and with locks they can't see through the trim. I think it is a pretty good plan to hide everything in plane sight looks like something else. Doesn't mean they won't find her paperwork eventually but they had to work for it. Thanks for the video. I am going to use 1 inch pine without holes. I am going to make it so I can bolt it to the floor. It is not going out the door for sure. I wish I had a nice place to built it like your place nice and organized but I can still build anything on the living room floor and put bolt it into place. Then I am moving........ I can't live somewhere you have to hide everything you own in your own home. Sad but most people live in bad areas around the US. Thank for the video. Gave me a few good ideas....
I congratulate the video is great and very helpful but I would like to know what the cut list to make a Queen side, if you please to tell me these measures, thank you very much

Wow this is amazing. Can't wait for part 2. Beautiful work, not a detail overlooked.
Interesting project ! I must admit, building my bed has always been my first project when I'll get myself a house. Thanks for the vid Jon.
Nothing better than a simple design, that looks great, and is functional. Very nice Jon!

I would love to see you tackle a murphy/wall bed. I hope to try one myself and your style fits in with how I see myself doing such a project.
Awesome project John! Thanks for sharing!
i'm indonesia love your video .. .. terimakasih ...

Gr8 video Jon......looking forward for another gr8 project....😀😆
I missed what kind of wood that was? Is it plywood maple? Also, excellent router technique. Doing it in steps...no tear out! Great work.

thank you , you gave me a lot of ideas to work , quite simply ! without carving techniques I'm from indonesia

BookofHolyH2O That makes sense.....didn't think about having to move it
Abel Nieto Thanks for your reply....after posting my questions I was thinking the same thing...
Good questions,I would like to see Jons response to #4.And the word Sewell is supposed to be "as well".Dang auto correct, threw me off,lol
I am just starting the wood working stuff and was wundering how long it took you to build the bed?
I have made a couple of picnic tables but want to expaned I am semi retired at 41 so am trying your idea with a few mods
will get a web cam and that to make vidio's of what I build but in the mean time keep up the good work
Nice work. Will you be adding any additional support for the mattress in the center?
Great design! Been thinking about building a new bedframe with extra storage, this looks the most straightforward. :)
I love this video,Im learning how to use tools ,Im building my own storage bed now ,thank you
There are some VERY handy carrier handles that allow one to carry large sheets much easier. They're available at the big box stores.
Well done. U make things seems so easy!
very nice Jon
How many sheets of plywood did you use for this project? Great job 👏
Thanks! I'm going to build something like this for a "stadium seating" platform for our second couch in the living room. Subscribed, liked, commented. Keep putting out great vids!

Thanks Chris ok sure I'll try to get a tour video up soon
Cool. I look forward to it. Digging your beekeeping stuff too.
Thanks man
Hi, Jon..Nice and so useful proyect. I´m anxious for part two and the finish of these proyect. Congratulations.
Greeting from Argentine.! Steve

Awesome build. I have seen many vids about iron on edge banding but not one of them has ever said what setting the iron is on...Could you tell me what setting you use on the iron?
Any bunk bed projects????? would love to see u post one..... cheers
Looks really good. Another great project, Jon :-)
Thanks!
Hi Jon. I can't wait for this project to be completed! A couple of really dumb questions. Why didn't you use any glue. Wouldn't glue make it a lot stronger? Does that edge banding stay put? It seems so easy to put on and I can't help thinking that it will peel off over time. Cheers
Good question's David, thanks i'll go over them on Tuesday
I guess Jon needs to set the finished bed up in his son's room : carrying it in pièces will be a lot more convenient than carrying big sets of cabinets. Gluing will be done on the spot !
Hi
I made it myself. Just go to wood prix webpage if you'd like do the same

I'm a carpenter and I like your video, i didn't know what to do with my son's clothes that he leaves laying around now i have an idea and i will apply that bed idea to build a storage bed.
Milton Deal sounds good have a great build
jon i like your work very nice
Looks great Jon. Question. It looks like on the long boxes there is a 1/2 inch over hang top and bottom. Is that correct?
is there enough support down the middle of the bed so the mattress doesn't "bow" through it ? I was thinking that when the back of the cabinets went on, perhaps a rail either side with some timber slats set flush with the top ?
Wow, that came out great, all that storage will come in handy for sure! Those 4x8 sheets are so much fun to handle right? Looking forward to part 2.
Matt Lane
nice. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic job.
Only 6" of snow!? You should come to south western Ontario!!
I'm curious as to your plan for the open centre section...I assume your using a box spring and leaving the centre open.
this was great to watch
I am also wondering how the mattress is going to fit here. Eagerly waiting for the next part... please post it soon :)
Great video. I have learnt many things from your videos.

subscribed and gave a thumbs up
Hi jon really nice work!.. I'm learning alot from you thanks for the videos. My question is by using plywood would the bed be marketable in your opinion?
Thank you, yes I think so
projeto muito bom,, muito pratíco e funcional ..brasil
Thanks
Great Build, Tom. Why did you choose not to cut a dado in the frame for the cabinet partitions?
If you don't mind explaining, could you tell me how you matched the rounded edges of the back pieces of the cubbies to the curved rabbid at each corner in the cubbies? Is there some sort of tool you use that makes a matching curve? I'm new to woodworking as you can assume, and I plan to build this bed on a larger scale.
Arin Hanohano sure I trimmed the rounded edge of the backs with a jig saw
Very nice project Jon.
How many hours do you have into the build at the end of this video?
Also, I was curious what the sheet goods you're using cost?
Thanks Scott, about 16 , birch plywood
***** Thanks, Jon, I am looking forward to the next video.
Birch plywood is about $50 a sheet here, making it a nice looking inexpensive project.
nice shop, clean
Hi, i was surprised that you did not use a biscuit in between the 2 screws when you made the side"Pods" and no glue either. Was this so that it could be dismantled before delivery?

I love it and I love your cabin too did you build that also or get a kit or something please lmk how I can get one;)
jon love your work you're amazing
Thank you Thor
You prefer that square sander vs circle orbital sander?
Is there a way to put the pieces (headboard, 2 long cabinets and the little box) together and be able to disassemble for moving?
Hi john just wondering what would be the estimated cost to build this great vid by the way
