Star Trek V may not be the best Star Trek movie ever, but I like it because it has 3 elements from the show, 1. they had a hostile force take over the Enterprise, 2. they had them encounter a "God like" being, and 3. the relationship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy was firing on all cylinders.
Also, the woman who gave Kirk his jacket when he got to the bridge of the Enterprise is Shatner's real life daughter.

I hate this movie partly for the first two reasons you said you liked it. As for the 3rd, it was such a corny way to do it, it ended up making me cringe so hard. And the rest of the movie.... Lots of really bad jokes. Making the entire crew except Kirk and Spock simps to fall for Sybok's religious nonsense. The idea that there is a planet at the center of the galaxy is laughable. I don't have enough power in my fingers to type all the awful things about this film.

    • @markhamstra1083
      @markhamstra1083 6 місяців тому +4

@@larrybremer4930You absolutely can be hard on Shatner for this movie. He is credited as one of the writers, so he doesn’t escape his share of the blame for the script’s lack of quality, and he was working with the largest budget for any Star Trek movie after the first. Your attempted excuses for Shatner are weaker than the movie he directed.

It was comedian Dick Gregory. We talked about nutritional supplements and conspiracy theories, but it wasn't one of those weird conversations, he was a brilliant man and very down-to-earth. Met DeForest at a convention. He did not sig autographs because he could only do it so long and didn't want to disappoint anyone if they were turned away. I however had presented him earlier, a framed drawing of him from my Star Trek comic strip 'Enterprise.' He was very delighted by it and asked me to autograph it for him! The next morning as I was checking out of the hotel, he shows up right next to me to do the same. I braved showing him another drawing of his character that I had hoped to also have autographed for myself, and because I had actually given him something earlier, he obliged.

The entire scene with Bones and his father is absolutely hearttouching. It's something I think a lot of us longtime Trek fans can relate to. Bones has always been a tough hardass, but in that moment, he was a son looking at his elderly dying father; a man of strength in his life asking to be unburdened from the world and pain. It's really quite... human I guess. It is a movie scene that rings true to many off us in reality.

Cassie, since you adore Mr.Scott, you may like to hear about how James Doohan was quite the WWII hero. He was a Lt in the Canadian infantry. After training in England he landed on the Canadian's Juno beach on D-Day. He protected his men by taking out two snipers and led the way through a mine field. He later got hit by six bullets in an unfortunate incident from his own side, with one of the bullets going in his chest but being stopped by a cigarette case given him by his brother ! ( its so movie like ). He recovered back in England then trained as pilot for those tiny little slow moving spotter planes that fly over enemy territory, spotting whats a danger ahead and what to target. After being seen slaloming between telegraph poles to prove it could be done he was called the craziest pilot in the Canadian airforce. Mr. Scott - real life hero !

I didn't know that. He did have a Celtic background himself though, being of Irish immigrant stock to Canada - and you know how those of Celtic heritage often maintain it well in the new world. Actually this triggered memory of the story behind John Cleese's 'Basil Fawlty' character. The Monty Python team had been filming on the south coast and some were put up in a hotel owned by a rude and eccentric former naval officer, who regarded anything guests needed as a nuisance. Most of the crew moved out, but Cleese and another remained to study the man ! Thus Fawlty was born.@@RichardBrake-fo4iw

It's a small thing, but it never gets mentioned when people discuss this film. Shatner is actually singing. He released albums during his career where he basically just talks the lyrics while the music is playing. I think he might have said in an interview that he had no confidence in his singing voice. But that was as fair a rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" as I have ever heard.

This one was directed by William Shatner and he did the best he could with what he was given. He had to deal with a very diminished budget that limited the special effects. This is especially evident in the space shots, the shooting model of the Enterprise was now ten years old and in need of repairs. ILM had done the special effects previously but were not available due to other commitments, another company came in to do them but had less time to get them done. They went as cheap as possible because of the budget being cut. Despite all of this, I still enjoy this film, the personal moments between the crew are great and we see a lot more of Uhura and other crew having more screen time. And yes, that is really Nichelle singing!

I always saw it very much like Superman IV: the Quest for Peace. Neither that movie or STV:The Final Frontier were very good films, *but both plots were quintessential for their respective franchises.* An 80s movie about Superman had to address Superman getting rid of nuclear weapons. And Star Trek's quintessential script, especially given that its creator was a staunch atheist, had to take on the concept of God.
I give STV more credit than I ever have, *because they made a movie THAT COULD NOT HAVE A GOOD ENDING.* If they found God, it would 1) anger people and 2) not serve the vision of Star Trek's creator. If they _didn't_ find God, instead saying that he doesn't exist (which the movie does in subtext), they would still anger...the _same_ people. Because of that, it is easily my favorite of the lackluster Star Trek movies. And one day, it will be accepted in honor as it should be.

Maybe we can blame this on first-time director William "I directed a few TJ Hookers" Shatner?
It was a bad move, for sure, but it's unfair to put it all on Bill. ST4 worked so well because ST2 and 3 took such a toll on the collective hearts of the legions of Boomer and GenX Trekkie-dom.
Stakes were raised!! Brilliantly orchestrated tension gave everyone nosebleeds and sinus headaches!! Savek got a facelift!! So many once-beloved TV stars from the early 80's kept trying to blow up the Enterprise that Kirk went ahead and did it himself!!
After all that, we the audience were desperate for some feelgood marine mammal re-population, Spock-interpreted profanity and madcap chase sequences through a nuclear wessel and brain surgery ward. The executive team behind ST4 read the populace well, so much so that people who has no previous interest in Star Trek bought tickets. Embarrassingly abundant success.
All of which spelled disaster for ST5, no matter who ended up directing. Knowing that there was nothing left to milk from the Kahn Trilogy, the creative staff was burdened with charting a fresh path for a greying cast while satisfying what had to have been unruly expectations from studio A&R types and casual movie fans to remake the comedic magic of ST4.
Finally, the acceptable but low-key recovery that followed with ST6 set the standard for the disappointingly unambitious TNG films. Never again would a ST story follow a multi-film arc.

This movie was a major disappointment to me after the highs of the first 4 movies (yes, I even liked the first one), but watching this reaction now I am reminded of how many good lines of dialogue there were. It wasn't a total loss, just not as good as the other movies. And the slashed budget did them no favors.

Once on the old Tom Snyder Tomorrow Show they did a Star Trek episode. On it were several cast members and Harlan Ellison. Harlan said "What if the Enterprise went to a planet and found God but it was really the devil?"
This one was as close as they got.

I love your positivity. Star Trek 5 wasn't bad, definitely NOT the worst Star Trek film. It's cute, a little silly. Because of Star Trek 4's upbeat nature, they wanted to continue the trend with this, and it had mixed results... Nonetheless, this movie still had some great moments. Kirk explaining how he needed his pain and how it made us who we were was actually a powerful and very relevant statement. Anyway, you do not want to miss Star Trek 6. The Director from The Wrath of Khan, Nicholas Meyer returns for it. Can't wait for your next video!

Many years ago, my university's film society included this movie as one of their "surprise" features for their annual sci-fi movie marathon. The atmosphere at the movie marathon was always pretty relaxed, with people occasionally shouting jokes at the screen, etc. So when the movie started, people started booing when they realized what movie it was, especially at the title card.
But the best part was when Kirk was climbing El Capitan. As you saw, he's climbing freehand up the cliff, and when he started losing his grip, everyone started chanting, "FALL! FALL! FALL!" Of course, he falls, and then everyone started chanting, "DIE! DIE! DIE!" Then Spock saves him, and everyone starts booing.
A moment later, the movie stops, and everyone is wondering what's going on. It turned out the whole thing was a practical joke, and the actual surprise feature was Star Trek VI. When that one started a few minutes later and people realized what it was, cheering abounded.

It's great that you noticed the term "borgas frat" from Scotty. Now I've never read or heard any confirmation of this, but I have always speculated that that was a very deliberate choice. In the original series episode "I, Mudd", Scotty uses that term as an expletive directed at Mudd, who was portrayed by Roger C. Carmel. Carmel died during the production of Star Trek V and I can't help but wonder if that was their way of honoring him. It would have been a very Trek thing to do.

As weird as you thought it was, it could've been alot worse! There was a deleted scene on the director's edition DVD where it showed a terrible looking rock monster. Apparently the "God" entity formed the rock monster to attack our heroes in the original version of the film before it was scrapped in favor of the final cut we eventually got.
Everyone seems to lay the blame of the movie's unpopularity at Shatner's feet. To be honest, I think the blame should fall on the execs at Paramount at the time, who weren't willing to fork over the money needed for proper special effects. Plus, ILM wasn't available at the time to handle the VFX, so the production team were forced to hire another company to do the effects for the film.

This has over the years become one of my favorite of the original star trek films. Like the motion picture my first time watching was not so favorable. I must say as I got older my opinion of them changed,as I now enjoy all six movies for different reasons. Having lost my Dad recently Dr. McCoy's scene with his dad will always make me very emotional. But all in all I love the lighthearted friendship shown between Kirk,Spock, and Bones. Star trek is at it's best when exploration of the unknown is at the center of the stories. All that considered Captain Kirk has run into many situations like this(with advanced aliens)in the og tv series so his skepticism was warranted. Also zapping Kirk for simply asking for proof was not the act of a loving creator. Thus proving this being was not God as Spock so eloquently put it. Also this movie reminded me of the star trek audio novels that I love listening to. Anyways great reaction. Very much looking forward to Star trek 6 reaction and beyond 😊_V(Live long and prosper).
