  • Hi everyone, and welcome back to Auto Gearz! Today, we're getting an exclusive first look at the highly anticipated 2025 BMW X3. We've been fortunate enough to take the wheel of both the high-performance M50 and the fuel-efficient xDrive30e plug-in hybrid on the legendary Miramas test track in France. So, buckle up as we explore the evolution of this segment-defining Sports Activity Vehicle.
The X3, first launched in 2003, has become a cornerstone of BMW's success, selling over 3.5 million units worldwide. The fourth generation, arriving in US showrooms this October, retains the familiar CLAR WE platform but coexists with the fully electric iX3 built on the new Neue Klasse architecture.
Early indications suggest a range of powertrains. The standard xDrive30 will offer around 280 horsepower, while the M50 boasts a significant bump to 390 horsepower. Additionally, the upgraded xDrive30e plug-in hybrid is expected to deliver a combined output of 300 horsepower.
The new X3 boasts a sleeker, more aerodynamic design with a lower drag coefficient. While the interior of base models might appear a touch conservative, the intuitive iDrive controller thankfully remains. The driver assistance suite is comprehensively upgraded, featuring automated lane changes, adaptive cruise control, and a suite of collision avoidance measures. The X3 even offers a remote parking function via the My BMW App, a technological marvel for urban environments.
Our focus today is on the driving experience. The M50 prioritizes handling and responsiveness with a revised steering system and suspension setup. Three suspension options are available: base, Sport, and M Sport. All can be paired with VDC, BMW's variable damper control system, offering distinct Comfort and Sport calibrations. Notably, the X3 adopts a new "axially parallel" steering design for sharper handling. While air suspension and rear-wheel steering are absent, the wider track, stiffer chassis, and improved front axle geometry all contribute to a more engaging driving experience.
Taking the M50 around the Miramas circuit, the improvements in steering and suspension are undeniable. The car feels planted and responsive, offering exceptional control and driver feedback. We explored the car's limits in a safe and controlled environment, pushing it through corners and experiencing the capabilities of the electronic rear differential.
Switching gears, we took the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid on a scenic exploration of the Miramas countryside. Early reports suggest a power increase to 300 horsepower and a significant jump in electric range, potentially reaching 60 miles. The combination of the electric motor and combustion engine delivers strong acceleration and surprising stamina. Comfort mode on the dampers and steering proved optimal for the uneven terrain, prioritizing a smooth and controlled ride.
The 2025 BMW X3 feels more mature and refined than its predecessor. It strikes a compelling balance between sporty dynamics and comfortable everyday driving. While some minor trade-offs exist, such as the occasional lack of steering linearity and the need for a firm foot on the brakes, the overall package is impressive. Based on our experience, the X3 appears well-positioned to maintain its dominance in the mid-size luxury SUV segment, offering a compelling alternative to the Porsche Macan and Mercedes-Benz GLC.
