    Very helpful video...
    One thing to point out though is that at step three you are basically done and continuing with the method is extremely inefficient. 3y = -6, so y = -2, and from there you can figure out the other two variables easily.

    Pivoting is the process of reordering the matrix element in order to make the first pivot element with largest magnitude(only Rows) in order to increase the accuracy. But what you did here.You interchanged R1 with R2. You have to interchange R1 with R3.So, that the first element would be 3.

    To check your work, substitute the solution back into the original equations. I found the solution to be (1,-2,3).
    So, I can check to see if 2(1)-(-2)+2(3)=10
    And check if (1)-2(-2)+(3)=8
    And check if 3(1)-(-2)+2(3)=11
    If all three come back as true, then you can be confident in your solution.

    *Every video on Gauss elimination lists the most trivial example and shows how to solve it* .
    I'd like to see someone tackle some of these:
    *Problem 1:*
    13x + 12y = -6
    -4x + 7y = -73
    11x - 13y = 157
    *Problem 2:*
    4y + 3z = 8
    2x - z = 2
    3x - 2y = 5
    *Problem 3:*
    7x - 4y - 2z = -6
    16x + 2y + z = 3
    *Problem 4:*
    5x + 5y - 10z = 0
    2w - 3x - 3y + 6z = 2
    4w + x + y - 2z = 4
    Have fun!

      Gauss elimination is a process that everyone thinks they understand based on one extremely simple example but which almost nobody truly understands.
      The problems I listed above will show you how much you really understand Gauss elimination. I don't think most people can solve them.

    why you change the rows ?

    • @thenibxa
      @thenibxa 9 років тому

      You can change the rows because it is a matter of how you write the initial equations. When he changed the rows the first equation became x-2y+z = 8 followed by the second equation 2x-y+2z=10 and the third 3x-y+2z=11.

    But at 4:24 you did wrong.. see
    moreover, when you obtain matrix at 3:42 (that has one row having single x variable [0 3 0 | -6] ) you don't need to eliminate further.. you can start back substitution instead.

    • @rawank.roumiye4701
      @rawank.roumiye4701 8 років тому

      +john Klitsko ! is it necessary to exchange ?

    • @johnfedorov8089
      @johnfedorov8089 8 років тому

      Rawan K.Roumiye There's multiple ways you could do it , it was just easiest to exchange the rows in this case. Remember, you always want to get a leading 1 as the first non-zero number in a row

    • @adamhawks3460
      @adamhawks3460 6 років тому

      When it comes to Gaussian Elimination, it’s perfectly fine to switch the rows. There are no rules stopping you from doing so. He switched them around to make it easier to get them in that diagonal 1 line up with the 3 zeros in the bottom left. It just made it easier in the long run.
