      @Jazz King...I can't believe this guy is actually serious. As if feelings are the most important thing. Coddle U is how you make a generation of whining and useless individuals. Social Justice is just a form a Cultural Marxism

    • @HrHaakon

      But his Strengthen U. is an almost spot on description of my public alma mater, with the one caveat that professors and staff really *want* you to succeed. But by that they want you to get an A through honest hard work. There are introductory classes I took where 33% of the students got an F. They don't like it. They don't want you to fail. But it's up to you to succeed.
      I kinda like that perspective. I actually did read up on my exam *after* the exams to fill in gaps in my knowledge. A "B" that you worked for means a whole lot more than a free "A". Because B is still above average. (C tends to be the average.)
      So it's amazing to me, that a libertarian is basically describing a public university in a socialist-in-denial country. (But it's less Marx and more Bismarck.)

    Absolutely brilliant talk, we're witnessing the death of our universities and in turn the death of truth and soon rationality, talks like this are the all to few counter points to the ever growing censorship and insanity of the SJWs. I think these talks are more valuable than most of us can really appreciate right now.

    I pick "strengthen U." I have long speculated that it might be productive for me to experiment with having a life coach (to add a different perspective to my thinking), but then I just imagined myself disagreeing with whatever they said. Actually, you have given me good advice.The "I don't know who you are" factor can be disturbing, as you know a lot about me. Nonetheless, I choose "strengthen U."

    I see the SJW argument for safe space and trigger warnings in the classroom like this:
    Analogy: You start working out, and you get a personal trainer. And you find that every time you lift any weights, you feel this "strain," and you end up feeling sore almost every day after you lift these weights.
    You get upset at the personal trainer, and you let him know that you'd like a warning every time you're about to feel "strained" or might feel "sore" the next day.
    And you tell your personal trainer that "he's holding you back, he's harming you, he keeps making you feel strain and soreness."
    ----
    It seems that the SJWs are essentially coming to college, but asking not to be educated. Just as the trainee is coming to the gym, but asking not to be trained.
    ----
    This is literally how I see these students. They swear that they are being damaged, but they don't realize that they are damaging themselves, they are asking to be coddled to a point where they can no longer progress and can regress.

    ~19:50 -- So true. On the Day of Silence this year, my college had a booth set up in the academic building to "raise awareness" of bullying against "LGBTQIA+" folks. I tried to get them to give a coherent explanation of gender, and of course they say it's based on feelings (notice, they don't actually give a definition, they just give a vague description, like defining a piano is "a musical instrument"). I politely and articulately explained why their ideas are incoherent and harmful to those it's purportedly helping. Their response: "You seem like the kind of person who sees the world in black and white." That's the best these folks can do, because they literally define reality by their emotions. It's a sad world when the institutions of education are proudly placing feelings above knowledge.

    The privilege stuff pisses me off the most. Almost everyone has baggage, traumas, and other shit they've been through. Ranking people by privilege is as bad as the same stereotypes that regressives are so offended by. You can't just look at a person and size up their experiences. Most of my family came from an abused background, though they had that "white thin privilege" and had to overcome many obstacles to get through college and have careers. None of them play the victim or try to get away with childish behavior simply because. But a lot of the younger people my age don't have that type of mentality or character.

    • @jeremyschnitzel92
      @jeremyschnitzel92 4 роки тому +1

      Just because you're white doesn't necessarily make you priveledged, like your parents for example who started off a lot worse than other people. However you cannot deny the rampant ignorance that young white kids have towards socioeconomic topics. This ignorance often leads to strong conservative values in adulthood that prevent our society to help stop the sort of discrimination that predominantly minorities and empoverished white people have to undergo in their early life.

    • @julieshrout9835
      @julieshrout9835 2 роки тому +1

      @@jeremyschnitzel92 what does "privileged" mean? Does it mean that you can do whatever you want and buy your way out of it? Does it mean you are entitled to make videos of how great you are and how the underdogs are beneath you? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm gonna have to Google that definition to make an argument. But I feel extremely privileged to be in my shoes. Like Joseph said (while I was thinking of how I'd cross the road in wipe out if the floor was hot lava and did it) "You give me courage mom." So I feel privileged to have this platform of opportunity to lead by example. To show people how bad you can be beat up, knocked around, and locked up under oppressive "entitled" jerks and still have a smile on your face and be the best you can in such a horrible fucked up situation. And still have love and kindness to spread. So praise God for privileged arrogant assholes, the Words university of scholarly writings of Coddling and Strengthening psychology to beat the enemy Satan's tactics, the maker of Google and an inquisitive mind, and wild native roots.

    I would still like to ask, is truth the most important value always. If you think someone is ugly but choose to be polite and don't express that idea, or perhaps even fib about it. Is that a bad thing. Just for the sake of truth? I'm curious how people view this.

    Coddle University brings considerable peer pressure, does it not? , on the Howard Roarks of the student body. So the conclusion I draw is that No. 6, if he wants to strengthen himself by adversity and encountering opposition, should enroll, not in Strengthen University but in The Village, an affiliate of Coddle U. (School mascot: the penny-farthing bicycle.) Better yet, why not enroll in Darwinian University, where both coddling and strengthening occur because both philosophies have their adherents among the faculty, and students must take courses from each?

  • @Mirandorl

    I agree mostly with this. The one caveat I would apply is that there is evidence from neuroscience that a small % of the population has a genetically overactive stress system, which makes their emotional reactions more intense and physically painful. It is known as "sensory processing sensitivity" - see Boterberg et al 2016. These people should not be coddled either, but they do require more guidance and feedback when learning social skills such as conflict and assertion, rather than being thrown into the crucible as it were.
    They usually WANT to be tough and don't want protecting at all, but their physiology makes it extremely difficult to do so. This means their reactions when trying to assert themselves can be disproportionate and lead to a "meek / exploding" cycle. Finding a way to incorporate that into the "strengthen" system would be an excellent addition.

    • @joshk7286
      @joshk7286 8 років тому +2

      Certainly an interesting phenomenon worth learning about, but I think the main problem is that people are using their sensitivity (whether innate or learned) to silence people with opinions different from theirs, which produces the exact opposite of the ideal university of tradition where the mind is forced to expand to deal with new and challenging ideas and to defend or evolve a previously established worldview.
      Sensitivity itself is no sin - it's the censorship that now comes packaged with it. Kind of like the difference between wanting to punch someone and actually doing it.

    Meng Tzu knew how to flip the pancake.
    The concept of "four legs in the morning, two legs at noon and three in the end of the day" containing all left-right, up-down heiracy possibilities in one personage, defines the default reaction to circumstances ability by relative timing stage of life...
    If the end of the day is inevitable, then so is the reaction to dominant conditions, of social and climatic stability, politics of nuclear annihilation or socioeconomic status.
    The general context of Human Culture appears to be quite fragile in the context of very inappropriate Politics. But we know about it.
    If we were to react to threats in kind, it would be all over now.
    Some Math-Physics and its required sense of proportion, to understand the surroundings and Psychology of all interactions, is reccomended.
    Risky to have a sense of humour, social media has no equivalent.

And using the word trigger and trauma inflationary and drawing a very victimized and wimpy picture of trauma survivors. They are not helping them with this they turn it into ridicule. It really enrage s me as a person with PTSD because of rape. To lump this brutal act of violence where someone is burgle into your body and torturing your body with "bohooo someone stares at me and i feel uncomfortable." it really appalls me.

      He isn't even talking about the left, he's reffering to those people who'll get offended by anything and even get offended by other people, he's talking about sjws
      And yes he does acknowledge that they tend to be left wing, but he isn't smearing them with the left

    I have trouble believing this is truly the widespread problem the Internet would have us believe.

      Just came from one of the largest 4 year public universities in America. It's very true for most because of the push for inclusivity in an egalitarian society. StrengthenU is progressively becoming CoddleU without realizing what is being lost.

      I'm in college now. But I'm going for engineering, so don't encounter these issues really at all. But I can tell you that the emails I get from the school advertise these safe spaces on campus, and advertise events about rape culture and discussing female abuse and LBGT issues. The bulletin boards are always full of events about these things too.
      I'd bet that if I were in the liberal arts I would see this more.

    Glad he mentions overgeneralizing and (false) dichotomous thinking... Odd he doesn't apply those concepts to this speech
