I think once we're doing Running the Game regularly and the Chain of Acheron campaign launches, folks will be getting all the stuff they expect and they won't mind seeing Codenames or Nethack or whatever. Until then, the twitch stuff will stay on twitch.
put everything on youtube. i want time lapse footage of the parking lot from 3am to 11:30 am with a Matt Colville voice-over talking about cement vs asphalt
"Many DMs will tell you that asphalt is the way to go, and while I respect that decision, here are some thoughts on cement that many people may not have considered: First is the connotation of cement. As we've talked about before, one of the fundamental philosophical delineations in old-school D&D was the boundary between the town and the wilderness, between civilization and savagery. If we had gone with asphalt in the parking lot, it would have blurred the distinction between the office and the outside. Asphalt shingles, tar roofing, all indicates that the office and the lot share common elements, but cement... that's the concrete jungle out there, you'd be a fool to go out without preparation out there, adventurer, a fool! Second is the palette, asphalt is black, but it's also warm to the touch, cement on the other hand is cold, uncaring, brutal in its aspect. People play basketball on asphalt, they run on asphalt because it's easier on their knees, their welcoming driveways are covered in asphalt, but cement? Nobody tangles with cement. Flak towers and bunkers, cinder blocks dropped from overpasses and crumbling buildings speaking of ancient destruction. However you slice it, cement has character. Finally, there's the construction of the material itself. Asphalt is a modern material, derived from modern petrochemicals, cement on the other hand, dates back to the Romans. Asphalt is completely out of place in a fantasy setting, but concrete can be moved back and forth through time without pulling players out of their experience, and it completely retains its foreboding, intimidating nature wherever it shows up. I'm going to put a link in the dobblidoo to a PDF scan of a fantastic article written by the laudable Michael Zeinhammer back in 1989. It was titled "road surfaces in fantasy roll-playing games" and he did this amazing breakdown of cobblestone, cement, asphalt, brick, paving stones, dirt, gravel, and more, including his thoughts on how movement speed and falling damage should be adjusted for each. I highly recommend it. Anyway that just about does it for me, next video is going to be on a subject very dear to my heart: wallpaper and paint, I think you'll like it. So peace... out."
How to run Tomb of Horrors well: Buy some pop and crappy pizza, let the players pick from some pre-gen characters and tell them "You're all going to die but we're going to see how far you can get and see who has the funniest character death"
I live in a rural area and for whatever reason watching twitch videos, even days later is a struggle. UA-cam is always reliable, so I greatly appreciate when things are uploaded to UA-cam.
As someone who has never played DnD and has a group of friends who never played as well, but want to give it a try the Character Creation cards are like a gift from a river that never stops flowing to its people. I would love to see more of those.
I have been waiting for a new video from Matt to listen to over and over again, I don't have a problem by the way I can quit whenever I want, but I don't want too.
My "BBEG" in my last D&D campaign was... an accountant... no magic abilities... no fighting skills... but he had resources, and used them wisely. Additionally, he wasn't even evil, though from a distance, the things he put in motion were certainly wrong or at the very least problematic. He definitely needed to be brought to justice, but in the end, it was easy to have sympathy for him. The place he found himself in lead him down a road he could not turn back from, in his mind. Anyway, was great fun. I love trying to move away from the norms when I can.
Matt; it's your content; you upload what you want to the channel, it's up to us to be happy that you're sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. I know I'm here for "Running the Game" as I'm still planning to DM (been planning for months and three weeks in a row; the game I planned has been forestalled...) but I'd never say that that's all I want on this channel. It's yours. You may be a river to your people, but the river may have many tributaries and branches, and it will go where it may. "A person is better than the worst thing they've done." ... I like that statement.
Yes, but people are weird. Lots of "big" youtubers split their content across multiple channels - I assume they do that because it results in more subscribers/views/revenue/whatever metric they care about. But I don't actually know since I don't make youtube videos in the first place.
@@samholden5758 It would result in more subs (but not more people necessarily), but not more views, so extra revenue. It's just a nice way of separating content.
I wouldn't mind seeing your non-DnD livestreams on this channel, because I really dig the personality you project and your friends all seem like cool people. That said, I understand why people would prefer to limit this channel more to the specific content they are looking for and I am more than willing to seek out your other content on other platforms.
Not even halfway through the video and I'm already excited enough to comment! Archeology and the history of these games is just the coolest, I had an amazing discovery yesterday. I work sometimes as a pet/house sitter, and the navy gentleman who owns the pup I'm taking care of right now asked if I was going to be away in the evenings for anything, and when I mentioned dnd he got out this tub of all the old stuff he'd collected while dm-ing for his buddies on the submarine! It's the original box set, the red one, and the metal minis box, and four folders of his old campaigns, and a giant hand drawn map! I haven't been so excited in a very long time.
WOW! Thank you for these Character Creation Aids! Most of my players have played for YEARS, but even so, in 5E characters creation is different than 3.5. I'm excited to have these on hand for "pick-up" or "one-shot" games where I have players that might not know what / who they want to play. These are a nice kind of "board game" intro piece. Printing them now and will laminate. ;-). Awesome!
That is the most incredible cloth map I have seen in my 42 years of gaming! I am pretty sure it makes my top 5 (maybe top) 3 maps of all time. What an awesome group of people, but they did get their advertising worth from you, Matt. I definately want to look into that.
The map of Satyrine? We love how vibrant it turned out! We were lucky to work with some incredible artists to bring that to life. Check out the Kickstarter to reprint the Black Cube if you'd like to secure one for you and your gaming group: www.kickstarter.com/projects/montecookgames/invisible-sun-return-to-the-actuality
As always Matt, great to watch your video. I would rather you look after yourself and rest (not too often) so that in the long term the streams and videos keep coming at the standard we have come to expect. Thank you and keep it all coming.
The character creation aides look amazing. The art is exquisite and the information is exactly what you want for the new players who don't know what they want.
My friend (and DM) told me about what has been happening with you guys, congrats! really happy for you and I hope things go smoothly for you - looking forward to some further content
Very excited to see strongholds, both my campaigns are about to finish up. Hyped to use it. Hope to see the game streams being uploaded on UA-cam. Perhaps make a extras channel for the other videos if you want this channel to be just DND content.
Rewatching this two years later now that so much has changed, now that we know all the stuff MCDM did in that space. It’s very impressive. Also, if anyone at the company reads this, y’all should make a big black box for all the Capital stuff when y’all get around of it
I've never clicked as fast on a video before! :D Also Matt, if you're concerned about not always having content for us, just post your Twitch archives on the channel. Whatever negative thing you can think about that process, I'm sure it'll be fine since most of us come for the discussions and answers to questions anyway.
Today, I found out that you have played Nethack more than just the single time I viewed your game months ago...I would love to see you bring these videos over to UA-cam! Keep up the amazing content!
I might only be here for D&D and Running The Game, but I don't see why I can't filter through the notifications I get from you guys. Like another comment said, this channel has from the very beginning been branded as the Matt Colville channel and not the Running The Game channel. Besides, I believe there are tools for just subscribing to a specific playlist.
These character cards are Great! I am planning on running a little one shot for some people who have never played at work and this will be super helpful getting the ball rolling!
16:30 You should create a secondary companion channel for your non-D&D stuff. A lot of channels do that for the extra/possibly-off-topic stuff- Technology Connections has Technology Connections 2, Outside XBOX has Outside Extra, The Oddity Archive has The Archive Annex, etc.
21:00 I have an answer to Mike's question. I don't know if it's a common one, but I see it as being pretty effective. Instead of having individual players role for something that the party wants done, have one roll for the entire party, and then let their individual success be determined by their skills. That way skills are more useful and they can't just overwhelm the check with numbers.
As much as I like edited content. I certainly recommend having a secondary channel or something to upload uncut versions of the board game plays. For a person like me it's always nice to have that kind of stuff to run in the background on my second monitor while I work, or just want to relax and listen to it. That same secondary channel could also store twitch vods. Because personally I hate watching vods on twitch (the player just is not very good for that).
Could you do interviews with all of the players for the next campaign? I just think it would help people be more invested and interested in the different characters. Keep up the good work! =-)
I would love for the streams to be posted on UA-cam! I can only get online on my mobile devices and Twitch very rarely works properly on my devices. Thank you for your awesome content!
There's also the option to create a secondary channel where such VODs can be uploaded. Then everyone who wants to see that can subscribe there. If that's not an option, I definitely would prefer the "upload everything" route.
WRT languages and translation- in the last game I played in we recovered a text in a lost dialect of an ancient language that noone spoke any more (we had to consult an expert just to learn what language it was in). Noone knew Comprehend Languages, so the Wizard and my Druid (who spoke the modern version of the language) had to decipher it from scratch, as a skill challenge over several weeks. As we accumulated more successes we got more accurate translations. The cool part was that the 'incomplete' translations the DM gave us were created by running the plaintext version of the handout through google translate and back several times (with more cycles for the more corrupt versions), with predictably hilarious results. It was really immersive as, over the course of several real life weeks, we gradually got a better idea of the what had been going on in places we'd visited earlier in the game, or how we would make plans based on information in the tome only for a further translation refinement to reveal we were wrong in our assumptions. Probably didn't actually take the DM very long to set up (since he was going to make the handout anyway), but added a fun element to what could otherwise have been a very boring skill check.
I think you should deffinitly put your regular gameings on youtube, but as other people have mentioned, put it on a seperate channel. Watching you guys play is fun, educational and that but i’m mainly here for DND. Depending on how much work a seperate youtube channel is, of course. Don’t push yourself over the edge!!
I'd love to see the VoDs on UA-cam, or even a secondary stream on UA-cam running at the same time as the Twitch ones. That way people who can't, or don't, use Twitch for whatever reason aren't missing out and it saves on editing time.
I've used something similar to the quick start cards in the past for a one shot, had the (experienced) players roll three times, that determined their class, race and background, then they rolled abilities in order, with the option to make one swap. It was fun to have a party of non-minmaxed builds, and got character creation for the whole table done quickly!
My vote is for UA-cam uploads. Love the Art & Arcana Deluxe set BTW. I also enjoy the history of the game stuff. Did some art for Gary Gygax's Dangerous Journey's Monster book many years ago and spoke to him often on the phone yet never met him in person. He was a great guy and also very much like you Matt, BUSY, Busy Busy, all the time and behind on his schedule LOL. But I am now the age (almost 60) that Gary was when I drew for him. Time flies my friend so sit back once in a while and enjoy more Nethack LOL. I just retired from my own TV show and find time now to DM two ongoing AD&D 2nd Ed games and have DMed since DnD began. It is the greatest of games. Well, sorry to ramble. Best of luck and always remember Old DMs never die we just Roll Away!
I know you said it would be terrifying, but I think there would be immense value in people seeing a prominent DM on UA-cam running a game when not in the swing of things. It could help a lot of people feel better, especially those overwhelmed with the idea of running their first game.
Gloomhaven is a great game! I look forward to seeing your experience. It will be tricky to edit, many of the “slow” parts are key to understanding what’s going on so I hope you leave most everything in.
16:17 If it isn't too much extra work, would you be willing to create a second channel to post the none D&D content? I know I would subscribe in a heartbeat. Elsewise, I don't mind that being posted here. Though I understand I may be in the minority.
Create a "Matthew Colville Plays" UA-cam Channel and upload all the Twitch stuff to that. I'm sure some folks would love to see those vids, but as you stated wouldn't want to be faked out thinking it's a regular video
Yes. This. Yes. More of the fun for the UA-cams, please. Also, if it is a "company" channel and for the twitch "extra bits" I would not have a problem with ads being enabled on that channel...it would give us another way to support MCDM if we wanted without you turning on ads for the RtG videos.
well done on the FREE character aids, THANK YOU! but as a fellow illustrator I'm sure the artists would appreciate the credit/breadcrumbs to their respective artstation/deviantart pages... (though, understandably, I'm betting you guys just did quick google searches+copy-pasted... perhaps for future awesomeness). Thanks again Matt! Long time fan.
Twitch to UA-cam What is the time and the effort required? Resources are finite. Do it if you can. Personally I am UTC+10 so often can’t Twitch. The tyranny of distance and time. But I love to watch your streams on UA-cam. You make it seem like you are hangin’ with a friend. A rare thing. And you are an expert. Another rare thing. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Great to hear that S&F is closing on delivery and I appreciate the Q&A. May I suggest a parallel channel for streams or non-D&D streams. That way, folks know what is where and are getting the content they are looking for. One criticism. Dr. Crawford teaches at one of the best 100 national universities (Univ. Colorado, Boulder) which is located within the 19th largest metroplex in the US (2.9 million people). His videos highlight the natural wilderness which is less than 30 min from his office door, because that's how the front range of Colorado is.
Hey Matt, you mentioned Lars and Anna threatening to play old Nintendo games. I'm all for it but be careful. Nintendo tends to crack the whips at people playing their games on streams or for UA-cam in what I've seen. Just tread with caution.
The Monolith has put on some serious weight since their debut in film... A wizard arrives precisely when they mean to, though too bad you're a Paladin. ;D
Some unrelated content is better than none, IMO. The quality of the channel drops when you upload unrelated stuff, but it also drops when time passes without an upload. IDK by how much either influences quality, but I would prefer too much content as opposed to not enough.
Post everything per schedule: This is on Tuesdays. That is on Fridays. Whatsis is every fourth Thursday except on Thanksgiving. Etc. That way, we can expect alerts accordingly.
Lovely to see you again Matt! On the topic of the non d&d vids, have you considered creating a second channel (perhaps named after your new company? Congrats btw, I'm so happy to see you being able to do this) for that content? That way it's available for those who want to see it and you can still have this channel for your D&D audience!
I would really like to see a NetHack archive on youtube. I loved quilting and throwing your NetHack streams up for sound. I was sad a few months ago when there was none on twitch to go back to.
Yes, I would prefer that the twitch stuff be uploaded here. I know that a lot of people associate this channel with running the game, but not everyone has the ability to watch things live so having them on You tube make them more accessible to more people. Also as the MCDM brand grows, having a backlog of content for newcomers to watch is, in my opinion, rather necessary for long term growth. On the off chance Matt sees this specific comment, you might want to go ask Dael Kingsmill about expanding a UA-cam channel from its original content catalog. Having followed her channel since its launch there definitely was a similar feeling transition when she moved away from only doing Mythology videos and she could probably give some pointers that are more useful than random internet guy #517.
LOVE that last question!!! As for posting Tuesday board games, etc., it's your channel so you get to post whatever you want. I won't watch those, personally, but I wouldn't be put out if they were here either. That said, if you're concerned others will be put out but want to post them to youtube, do you have the option of creating a second channel for people to subscribe to for that content?
Upload everything to UA-cam, weither it is D&D, hobby gaming in general, fiction, music... Your videos have been very inspiring to me. I'm now hosting game nights for my family and friends all the time.
I would really enjoy everything from twitch ending up on youtube, but PLEASE make organized playlists for all the content if you choose to go that way. Loving the studio videos, hope you are happy with your upcoming book and I'm surely gonna tune in for the stream.
To solve dogpiling on skills I give people roles. If you want a map of the dungeon one of you will be focusing on mapping. Other than that, you can be on the lookout for enemies or secrets (incl. traps, lost treasure and hidden doors). Do you want to conceal your tracks? That's another job. Keeping the party sneaky is another job (although it's a bit of a weird role, I prefer it over having everybody roll stealth).
I'd love to have nethack on here. Your vid of it you did put up a while back is one of my favorites of yours and I don't have time to be flexible enough to catch every livestream. Maybe put up a UA-cam vote for it because that will gove you actual percentages and more focused comments on the topic in question.
Yes, you should add the nethack and game streams to UA-cam. I watch on my smart TV and Twitch's app is ATROCIOUS for watching old content. You would make me very happy. Plus, ignoring notifications is a better option for me than just not getting to see the content!
on the case regarding uploading other content, I suggest making a secondary canal, where you can host all the other content that doesn't go on you're the main canal. like the vod's from Twitch.
Thank you SO MUCH for the character creation aid I made one myself for my players who don't know much about fantasy land, but this is so much better. I also incorporate something in my games I stole from cthulhu called drives.
I'd personally love to have you upload the Twitch videos to UA-cam, specifically the sessions of Nethack. I loved the few you posted a while back and would definitely appreciate being able to watch more.
I think once we're doing Running the Game regularly and the Chain of Acheron campaign launches, folks will be getting all the stuff they expect and they won't mind seeing Codenames or Nethack or whatever. Until then, the twitch stuff will stay on twitch.
That's fair. Looking forward to more content. Whenever you post a new video, it makes my day
Maybe create a MCDM UA-cam account for Codenames and miscellany?
If disappointment is your main concern, you could batch your videos and only release once you have a new Running the Game.
Upload game session on a second channel perhaps?
@@SeeMeFeelMe this is the best idea. Perfect way to share the content more, whilst keeping your own channel true to the intended idea.
put everything on youtube. i want time lapse footage of the parking lot from 3am to 11:30 am with a Matt Colville voice-over talking about cement vs asphalt
That would get a scary number of views.
"Many DMs will tell you that asphalt is the way to go, and while I respect that decision, here are some thoughts on cement that many people may not have considered:

21:00 I have an answer to Mike's question. I don't know if it's a common one, but I see it as being pretty effective. Instead of having individual players role for something that the party wants done, have one roll for the entire party, and then let their individual success be determined by their skills. That way skills are more useful and they can't just overwhelm the check with numbers.
Actual Q&A starts at 19:36.
I can't wait! Well, yes, I can wait, but excitedly. Got a copy for me and one for my occasional DM coming.
I loved the first codenames you uploaded. Definately would be okay with seeing more of it.
I love Invisible Sun! My players bought me the Black Cube for Christmas and it has quickly become my new favorite game.
The making stage sounds amazing! Can't wait to see some content from there :)
I would love for you to put up the videos of your streams.
I love your sarcasm.
I cannot wait for your book. And for more videos.

If it isn't too much extra work, would you be willing to create a second channel to post the none D&D content? I know I would subscribe in a heartbeat.
Elsewise, I don't mind that being posted here. Though I understand I may be in the minority.
Create a "Matthew Colville Plays" UA-cam Channel and upload all the Twitch stuff to that. I'm sure some folks would love to see those vids, but as you stated wouldn't want to be faked out thinking it's a regular video
I second this! Two channels
or MCDM Plays
I second this. Maybe MCDM2 for the channel name? That way there is no limitation to what goes on the second channel
This is the answer
Yes. This. Yes. More of the fun for the UA-cams, please. Also, if it is a "company" channel and for the twitch "extra bits" I would not have a problem with ads being enabled on that channel...it would give us another way to support MCDM if we wanted without you turning on ads for the RtG videos.
Upload everything mang. All Matt Colville. All the time.
well done on the FREE character aids, THANK YOU! but as a fellow illustrator I'm sure the artists would appreciate the credit/breadcrumbs to their respective artstation/deviantart pages... (though, understandably, I'm betting you guys just did quick google searches+copy-pasted... perhaps for future awesomeness). Thanks again Matt! Long time fan.
Twitch to UA-cam
What is the time and the effort required?
A wizard arrives precisely when they mean to, though too bad you're a Paladin. ;D
I played Nethack for ages. It's fun to watch Matt play, though last time it turned into some Q&A, too!
Some unrelated content is better than none, IMO.
The quality of the channel drops when you upload unrelated stuff, but it also drops when time passes without an upload.
IDK by how much either influences quality, but I would prefer too much content as opposed to not enough.
Kudos for the Class/Race cards Matt/Josh. When you do the re-write perhaps contemplate crediting the illustrators also. ;)
Been binge viewing on your vids. Magic. Thanks.
Post everything per schedule: This is on Tuesdays. That is on Fridays. Whatsis is every fourth Thursday except on Thanksgiving. Etc. That way, we can expect alerts accordingly.
I don’t think the non D&D content would be very well received on UA-cam but it’s your channel. Do what you like.
I love the codename streams! And I love being able to watch them on UA-cam
I want everything YOU to show up here. Wouldn't mind a MCDM channel for the playthroughs? But otherwise I'd love it all right here.
Looking forward to the pre-game and post-game DM talk videos ! :)
I would really enjoy everything from twitch ending up on youtube, but PLEASE make organized playlists for all the content if you choose to go that way. Loving the studio videos, hope you are happy with your upcoming book and I'm surely gonna tune in for the stream.
Here's a pic of the Taarna mini where you can see her @ symbol. Note the ample supply of lichen to eat!

Art & Arcana is amazing. Highly recommended for this audience.
Man those character creation aid will be super useful when i'm running Adventurer's League at the local store and at cons.
I realize this is an old video now, but I would LOVE to see more Codenames, etc. videos on UA-cam.
We wants it, we needs it. Must have all the videos.
I'd love to have nethack on here. Your vid of it you did put up a while back is one of my favorites of yours and I don't have time to be flexible enough to catch every livestream. Maybe put up a UA-cam vote for it because that will gove you actual percentages and more focused comments on the topic in question.
I'm sold. Mothership is now on my wishlist.
Thank you SO MUCH for the character creation aid
I made one myself for my players who don't know much about fantasy land, but this is so much better.
I also incorporate something in my games I stole from cthulhu called drives.
7:26 Hi! Billy Mays here with this black cube!!! lol, fun unboxing! Also, i loved Nethack and had no idea you were still streaming it!!!
Long live Mothership! The black and white book is the phb, dead planet is a module.
I'd personally love to have you upload the Twitch videos to UA-cam, specifically the sessions of Nethack. I loved the few you posted a while back and would definitely appreciate being able to watch more.
I love all of the content, don't mind where it is. would love edited gloomhaven play!
I wasn't prepared for a video of this length lol
