What a brilliant system.
I have an art/craft space &, because I create a variety of things, storage of my eclectic stash has been my nemesis.
So thank you for planting an organisational seed 😊❤
My code is: A Place For Everything. Everything all over the place.
I found my Hitachi Finish nailer after 9 months! (It was in the basement)
Wherever it is, is where it is.
I'm trying to fix that. It's not going well. I can't find my table saw.
Honestly, you could do a video about paint drying and I’d still watch it! Not that this video was boring at all, just really love your enthusiasm for all your projects, regardless of what they are! You’re awesome Laura!
Laura, I will never have your wood working, metal and other skills as a Maker, but I am very happy to watch whenever you can come up with a build project. It is because of women like you that I've been inspired to learn how to use a Chainsaw. I've always been scared of that tool. But I just want to face my fears. A friend was very kind and patient to teach me how to use a chainsaw. I've enjoyed it so much. They just need to fall a few trees for me to practice on next time. God bless!
Simply brilliant.
You obviously put a lot of thoughts into it, yet it appears simple and efficient. I love it!
You have no idea how much this helped my thought process for organizing my garage shop. I have many tools in a small space and figuring out how to group things together in this way has been challenging. But your system totally makes sense
You have tought about this realy well. It is always fun to keep your stuff organized. Right now i'm working on it to organize my shop too. It is to small to make a mess. Thanks for sharing this idea
Organization is one of the things I struggle with most in my shop. I wish you good luck with your project.
I love this system! it's simple, but covers so many different bases. Looking forward to seeing how well it performs during your move and in your new shop!
The expandable nature of the crates with them being available in different sizes (depths) should be fantastic! Acquiring additional tools or consumables is always what throws a wrench into my organization attempts. I wish I could find crates like that here.
Mind blown, that's an amazing organization. Time to reorganize my shop thanks to you.
Hi Laura, I remember a handy way to do custom shelvings with eurocrates. Though, I unfortunately forget where I saw it. the shelves were build out of extruded aluminum profiles with tslots on each side, such as Bosch profiles. four long vertical bars, and shorter horizontal bars. using special connectors and t-nuts the horizontal bars could be tightened at any height. the crates would run on the crate's buttom rebate where they usually interlock. the vertical bars could be fit into a cabinet or be stiffened by more aluminum profiles, I guess. so this could make a flexible system which could be changed at any time.
thinking a bit further about costs, I think the following assembly might be the cheaper. vertical tslotted aluminum beams, and horizontally mounted runners made from rolled steel bars, such as 30x15mm, attached to the side of the vertical beams. each runner would need to be drilled and countersunk to accept bolts with the t-nut.
the aluminum profile accessories to do the same are probably more expensive than specially made steel runners.
I love color coding and find it’s an easy way of empowering others to use your creations.
One way of improving your system, is to color code the tape you use for the labels,
Great Laura! I always needed an advice about the mess in the workshop, actually my home truns from a spacious and empty apartment in Palma de Mallorca alt stadt , to a workshop with a bed beside a cnc milling machine, and a bunch of all kind of plastic boxes with mixing stuff... your system, is cheap, and well done! It’s a good starting point to make my own! Hugs
I absolutely love this color coding system! I can't wait to see what you come up with for the cabinets!
Colours are a good way to go for quickly identifying things. Your new workspace looks cool. All of your workspaces have looked cool actually.
Wow. I see you only on UA-cam so this is first time I hear that you moving ( shame -you spent so much time , money and effort do make it beautiful ).So new shop , new challenges . Organizing tools is important and very personal so you have to do it the way you are comfortable with it - others will have to learn it .Thank you Laura .
I love colour systems. They work so well for me. Really cool logic!
This is just amazing. It’s the right compromise between engineering and creativity. That just means... I love it! 😍
I think this is a really great system!
It reminds me of ways that I organise information on spreadsheets! 😄 so great to see this in a practical environment. 💜
Searching for crates on Facebook marketplace right away! Awesome tip
Great system using the principles of Lean. Can't wait to see how you expand it. Thanks for such great content.
Wonderful! My shop is always evolving and use a similar system; grouping things as to a series of attributes: Function, Tool, accessory. Great system!
Love this system! Looking forward to the cabinet build! Gonna use a similar system in my workshop for sure! thanks a ton for sharing
Good plan Laura. Works in a medium to large workshop.
I lost my place in a divorce, and now have to work in mother's very small garden shed, and there it doesn't work, just hang powertools on the ceiling. As soon as I have a bigger place, I will consider your system.
I LOVE THIS SYSTEM! Great idea and organization. 👍🏼
That's the first time I've seen the outside of the new shop. The shop and the setting both look incredibly inspiring!!
A little block of wood or maybe slippery plastic like HDPE secured in the rectangular recesses around the top of the crate, that sticks out just enough to catch a dado in a shelf, might be useful as a drawer idea and not in the way if you go another route.
Nice and easy way to keep everything organized👍
You could also made some mobile workbenches for the crates, so the stationary tools can be grouped together with the handheld tools.
For example: mobile workbenches for the belt sander with crates of orbital sander, sand paper under the belt sander. Just my opinion 🤪
I am very O.C.D., I love this approach. I would even go as far as putting the metal working tools in a metal cabinet and wood oriented tools in a wood cabinet.
A lot of great ideas. Have you ever noticed how some tools seem to be able to walk? My hammers and screw drivers always seem to walk off some where.
Hi and thanks for your wonderful mind. Re the cabinet. My suggestion is a shelving cabinet where the shelves are made of tube steel with the depth large enough for the shelves to clear each other and the inside area large enough to accommodate each box so it drops into the shelf. That way in addition to sliding the box out for easy access you can lift the boxes out should one break or you need to take a set of tools on the road. Think I might even make one myself for my really messy garage/workshop. Thanks again 🤓
Awesome!! I’m sure this system will help out a lot!!
Hi Laura, I love your channel! The system is really interesting. I think it demands great attention when starting to use it, mainly when the shop has already a lot of tools, as yours, because to keep in mind all the "rules" doesn't look to be easy.
That's an awesome system, it looks like it's coming together nicely!
I REALLY like color coding, but it never occurred to me to separate things by warm or cool tones. What a great idea! I'm excited to see how the organizational system helps while moving shops. That's always a challenge.
I find your system inspiring. I would divide things differently, but that doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you have a system, and it’s one that seems intuitive to you. It should work well.
Amazing and so efficient! Love the color system.
Got to love UA-cam recommendations, would have never known of your videos. Wonderful channel Ms. Kampf. You wouldn’t happen to have a link to those euro crates? That is a fantastic idea for organising and storage.
Spent some time in Spangdahlem, Germany, beautiful country and lovely people.
Look forward to hours of watching your other videos.
Do these angle grinders spark joy?
Excellent! Congrats, Laura KampfDo.
Great video! Nice system! Awesome as always Laura!!
That’s a brilliant stuff organization! Especially for the power tools!👌
Great Laura, I'll try to implement something like your system. I have a suggestion for you to migrate to the slidable boxes: IMPORTANT THINGS FIRST begin considering that the 80-20 rule (research it please) also applies to a workshop; then start by putting only the tool boxes group that you use often into more convenient boxes, let's say Drill related stuff into slidable boxes at to begin with. Don't bother about the tools that you only use seldom; creating slidable boxes for them would robber your time. Nice work.
Moving again so soon? The new place looks awesome. It sounds like "studio" on the second floor is the apartment kind of studio. If so, very nice to have work and home in one place like that. Looking forward to seeing the build of the new shop.
Really great idea
Really love this series of organising stuff. It cools my inner OCD and gives a satisfying feeling.
I have a request, please release a font pack of your handwriting. I would really like to have in my computer. It's easy. You can find on the internet how to do it. It'll just take 15 minutes
Such a great idea to make three sections: tool, accessories and consumables (Werkzeug, Zubehör, Verbrauchsmaterial)! Das merke ich mir gleich für mein kommendes French-Cleat-System! Einfach, wie genial!
I love the idea of a color coded organization.
If you don't mind... one thing that came to mind just now is about accessibility. Not sure what spectrum (sorry, pun) of the population you will be working with. But you might think about those who have some form of color-blindness. If you are locked into your color scheme (I can see why, it's awesome) then maybe have a secondary indicator; like icons, etc.
Random Idea when i saw the Discs in the Crate: Make/Print some inserts that are essentially a bar with a base that locks into the crates mesh, each bar could hold a type of consumable without them hitting each other or getting out of order. I have to get some of those crates too XD
Cant wait to see walls/carts full of those in your new shop :)
I set out with the idea of using plastic boxes from the pound store for £1 (1+Euro) & with individual shelves so I could pull the bottom without disturbing the above, but over time I have begun to group what I used frequently on the drawer like system & what I use less on the stack system, just to save having to make more sliding drawer storage & this allows me to get going much more quickly. In my idea I lift the entire box, use its contents as needed & then put the whole box back. The boxes are too small for most power tools so I am beginning to develop your ideas using plastic bread bins that I saved from going to landfill. They are mostly brown so I can't colour code as is, but I can spray paint or label. I am super excited about the potential of this storage scheme as currently my workshop is maximum entropy & it's hard to find stuff & it is infested with multiple potential accidents waiting to happen. I have been lucky with it so far, but it needs urgent attention before one of these accidents gets me. Thanks for sharing!
An idea for a storage unit could be adding 1/2 ply to the bottom of every tray and having dados on the cabinets and at set heights to allow the draws to be placed in/out easily. Similar to the Ron Paulk set up. All the cuts will be the same width and depth so very little waste from a sheet of plywood. Just an idea. I’m not great at this nut the idea popped into my head. 🤪🤪 loving the videos. Organisation is key to flow, productivity, enjoyment, timing. Everything. Take care and have fun.
I think you should consider the dirty and dust that can come from your tools. Maybe after you use your angle grinder it can drop dust in the lower shelves creating a mess over time (I'm saying that because you're going to have holes in all the shelves). I would suggest you to either put all the dirty stuff in the lower shelves or put something to close those holes. I'm sorry about my broken English :P but I'd like to say that I love your channel. THANKS, YOU'RE AWESOME!
Very cool ! Im french and i understand because you talk slowly thanks! And its very cool your new shop
Hi Laura good to see you looking cool as always , great idea with the different colours of crates , you just need some form of identity system so you know exactly what's in the crate other than a general over view , looking forward to seeing the next video. Its good to see you expanding your ability.
Great idea. Those color codes! Thumbs up! In the meantime, I think that you have become the Moving Queen. I'm looking forward to see your next videos
and projects.
I wonder how much German I really have in me. This kind if organization and order makes me really happy.
Woah, moving again? But... but your new (old) workshop was brilliant and tall and open! Anyway, that's a keen system you're evolving, practical and easy to get an overview on. Organisation was never my strong suit, but I'm inspired to try better now. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a good plan Laura. And a crate for your cloths, are we to assume that you will also be living in your new shop too? Especially since you passed on your Tiny House to a friend. Eager to see more videos on your new shop setup. Be well.
Hi Laura, Very nice idea. Maybe you can adapt an Ikea Ivar to use as your storageoplossingen cabinet. These are very flexible and easy to adept over time...
amazing organizational idea, i hope more people adopt & adapt some of these solutions. i'm curious as to how items like drill bits and screws/nails/fasteners will be included & categorized along with any small metal/wood/plastic scraps as well
You've read my mind Laura. I have a very similar system with milk crates. Sometimes I stack them 7 high and add a metal bar between them to physically do a few pull ups. Jump boxes as well.
Anyways in regards to the storage systems. My ultimate goal is to tag each and every tool with Ultra High Frequency RFID Tag. Then I can place each crate over the UHF antenna or scanner, and it will tell me what exact tools I'm looking for. It can scan the crate I'm putting away to make sure every tool has been returned. Or I can search for a tool in my database and it can point me to the right crate. Or just scan the crate to verify the tool is in there without having to fumble through every tool.
This is all concept but I know for a fact it can be accomplished. Just need some time, money, and some patience.
Nothing like the german way of thinking... Amazing organazation program
Color code is a great idea. Might have to try this out!
Great new shop Laura.
Good idea with the crates for organization. The only thing I think you might consider is putting the consumables on top of each stack. It seems to me that would be the crate you'd be accessing more often than any other. Get the grinder out. Put on a 40 grit flap disc. You want to smooth the part a little more. Put the 40 grit back and get out a 60 grit disc. Still not enough. Put the 60 grit back and get the 120 disc. Same idea would work with DA sanders, drills, etc.
Anyway, just food for thought.
I love the system, and now I'm thinking of how to adapt the colour system for my art classroom.
Again moving? Looks like it get's a yearly routine^^ I liked the look of the last workshop. Looked like a great place.
Many looks were thrown in this comment^^
Great ideas! You're inspiring. ♥
So toll! Ich muss das in meiner Werkstatt benutzen. (Spent a year in Barsinghausen but that was 13 years ago, sorry if my German sucks lol)
I'm color-blind: instructions unclear. Now my cat is pregnant, and butcher block is missing one leg. Please advise! ;-) *I love your videos and am jealous of your ability to create*
Crate job! (sorry, couldn't help it) New shop sure looks nice on the outside. Can't wait to see the new set up.
love the idea :) kinda did the same thing with milk crates but what i did was make a flight case style so even when i had to go on tour for work i already had a mobile and workable system, just an idea hope it helps with those creative juices to flow :)
BTW the 1/2 size crates that fit on top of these bigger ones are great also, you can slide them back and forth to still have access to the crate underneath without lifting them away
I love this system! New shop?! Looking forward to see some videos from moving and organizing.
Nice system Laura, simple and effective. You moving again? I must have missed that, the new place looks nice.
Excellent system! Hope you don't get upset if in the middle of California, I copy you a bit. You've made great sense of organizing. Thank you.
This is an awesome organisation system.
I have had the idea of using these kind of crates for storage solutions for over a year now. I love the colors and sturdyness of them. Your implementation is very well thought out, i love it! Does anyone have tips on where to get these kind of crates on a budget? ive seen them go for over 20 euros new and over 10 second hand.
Love it, and you seem so ecstatic about it!!
Keeping space organized is important for productivity, but I am a bit perplexed in general about the method and therefore you let us know. Thanks for the video Laura I enjoyed👍
Hi Laura, I felt I should warn you about crates vs. storage. I tried u.s. milk crates for storing many different types of things. The main trouble with stackable crates of any size is just that:stacking. You'll find the act of unstacking and restacking the crates is a tremendous waste of time and effort when you simply want to access a tool or resource. And when you already have a tool out, but you suddenly need an accessory, it's buried at the bottom of a stack. Put the tool down, make room to put a crate, extract a crate, select your accessory, then restack everything, then(finally) resume work. I remember when Adam Savage gradually converted his shop to a "0-order" access system to reduce all wasted,(non-tool-using) time to zero. In this system, "drawers are evil","storage bins are evil", in fact ALL forms of containment devices which take any effort or steps to reach the desired goal are evil. He eventually settled on a shelves-and-specialized-stands-for-everything system. He even made a video about it somewhere. But one's shop is an extension of one's body, and its design is so highly personal, that nobody should ever comment on the design of anybody else's shop. I like your choice of colors and sizes of crates! Here's Adam's anti-drawers video:

I love the Euroboxes too, they really are a great system. The only challenge is the color scheme, which is pretty limited (for affordable cost).
Especially a neutral color as “white” is always hard to get.😒
Fantastic system - I'll have to adopt something similar! I love getting to see your throught process.
In terms of storing the crates, have you seen Jeremy Schmidt's workbench build? It is similar to Frank Howarth's build, in that the drawers are modular with a rail system that supports multiple size combinations. Perhaps something similar could be done with these crates, with a modular rack that allows a shelf for the crate to sit on?
Very satisfying. Different coloured tape labels too?
Just an idea, but what if you did something kinda like what Frank Howarth did with his storage system? You could make some runners that fit around the bottoms that register into the crate tops.
I'm hoping I'm making sense here. It's late and I have troubles getting what's in my head out in a coherent manner at the best of times.
You definitely worked out a nice system there! Keep it up. :)
So very satisfying!
Hi! I love the color-system, I have somthing similar for my handtools to sepererate the tools for the workshop from the tools for the construction site for example. But I`m not nearly as well organised as you do. The way you do reminds me a little bit of the managment of the "Bundeswehr", having a system (they had looong numbers) for every eventuality. But if it works, you will be fine with it. Let`s see, how it works in the future. (Have you ever thougt about building your workshop in a big trailer? Movements would be much more easy??)
What about adding strips into the grooves at the top of the trays to act as runners, then have a shelf system with grooves to accept them, a simple way i have done this with a different system is the use 2 or 3 lavers of wood, a main upright, then attach wood to the faces to leave grooves, it's better than having to cut the grooves.
GREAT GREAT IDEA LAURA!
Really great idea Laura! Very clever to pair boxes of similar categories together and a really effective use of colour to create a universal, easy to understand and visual storage solution! For the holding cabinets, you should check out a solution by Paul Kelly called B.O.B - it utilises magnetic cabinets, that can stick/click together and rapidly grow/change to meet your changing needs. He also developed shelves that can slide in at any position, allowing you to cater to the different crate heights :)
Haha. It was a like a reminder to organize my stuffs too. :D . Though, I was left with 1 doubt, Laura: where is your smile going? Warm (studio), Power tools? :D ..... Is cool to watch when someone is...mmm...(how was it)...mmm...OH! successful!, after all the work he/she puts on something. Thumbs up for the good comments and for you. See you around.
How about a carousel; lots of space in a small place and fast accessible. You can pile them up to the top. Btw, love your channel.
Sometimes I wonder if having too many tools is a curse or blessing! : ) Great video. Love how you grouped tool, accessories and consumables together. Makes sense. Aloha! : )
Happy Sunday! Cool video - thanks for sharing :)
Amazing Laura. This has a real Adam Savage first order retrieveability feel about it. Cant wait to see the new workshop and build out
