i'm so glad you're doing this; just want you do know that even if you ever feel discouraged from or unmotivated to make new content, a lot of us truly love and appreciate what you do. especially for a language/topolect that doesn't receive a much attention as mandarin and has fewer resources for heritage language or new language learners. it's also really valuable that you include the characters, the jyutping, AND the english -- i imagine that subtitling for three different things must take a looong time and I appreciate u for it
Thank you and I really appreciate you taking the time to write me that, Juliette 😊! The triple layer of subtitle does take a long time, but it’s worth it when I hear that it really helps people!

I’m Pakistani in hk and I can’t speak good Chinese but I sometimes forget some words or slangs. Which sucks cuz if no locals understand, it’ll be embarrassing. I’ve decided to work on my Cantonese since I’ll be living in hk forever. I love Hong Kong and Cantonese. 愛香港,我可以寫中文字。
Brittany, I just want to say I love your videos. I don't know how I stumbled on your videos. I'm also a CBC, and like you, I had a turning point in high school and really wanted to get back in touch with my Cantonese Chinese culture and language. I would say I have fairly intermediate skills, in that I can read and write, and hold conversations (beyond just ordering dim sum), but there is still so much to learn. Finding Cantonese resources is a challenge because these days it seems like everyone is focusing on Mandarin. Whenever I did come across a resource for Cantonese, I found it too basic, entry-level or boring. The target Cantonese level on your videos is exactly what I am looking for. I like the content on your videos and you really make things interesting. I also love the subtitles because it allows me to take notes. Your channel is amazing! Keep it up!
Really impressive. Thank you for sharing all your resources and for starting this channel. As a TCM practitioner who has many CBC clients here in Toronto, it's great to see these resources for those who want to learn about their heritage language. I see an uptick of CBCs getting more interested in their roots now, which is great.
@@cantobritt You're very welcome! I did see that video where you introduced Cantonese-language podcasters - I've recently started a Cantonese podcast, which you and your followers can check out if interested (it's about TCM): anchor.fm/fortunus-games Many of these have a video version, which can be seen here on my UA-cam.
I'm also an overseas Chinese, born in the Netherlands. While I understand the basics of Cantonese, and I speak it fluently, my vocabulary in Cantonese isn't anywhere near my level of Dutch. I am also on a journey to improve my Cantonese and to preserve our culture. And I also want to do this, preserving Cantonese culture and my HK heritage, to give a big middlefinger to the CCP.
Hey! Thank you so much for starting this channel. I'm a high school student from Nepal , you probably dont know where that is, but I'm really in love with this language and have been learning this for over a year. You videos having Cantonese subtitles, most have mandarin, with Jyutping really help a lot. Please keep making these videos. You can also maybe teach some grammar, but it's probably hard for you as you didn't actually learn its grammar. Nevertheless. I support you. Ga yau la.

I think this is a great project, and trying to preserve the culture and the language of Hong Kong is definitely an extremely important thing, especially nowadays. Keep up the great work! 加油!
I've also been trying to learn some Cantonese to speak with my wife more in her language. I grew up in HK, but I didn't learn much Cantonese when I was a kid. Having married a wonderful HK lady, it's become more important for me to learn Cantonese to speak with her in her own language and also with her family (which is my family too now!).
Why weren't you able to learn Cantonese when you were born in HK? Is it the push for you guys to learn Mandarin in school and your parents are encouraging that so they don't teach you your mother tongue?
@@lookingfortruth1930 I wasn't born in HK. I'm white, born in USA. I moved to HK when I was younger and went to an International school where the language was English.

Wow very impressive. I'm an ABC too and my Cantonese is considered pretty good compared to almost all my peers, but yours is way better. Your vocab is fantastic, do you write your script in English and then translate into Cantonese or do you already know all this Cantonese and just write up the script in Cantonese. i.e. What's your process, if you don't mind sharing. Keep up the great work!
Hi I found your channel from the Cantonese couple. Can’t wait to watch more video. I’m from Hong Kong and I would love to be able to teach Cantonese someday. Hope you don’t mind me correcting your pronunciation. 廣 gwong2 in 廣東話 should be pronouncing both “g” and “w” if you speak properly. It’s different from 講/港 gong2. Of course if you want to sound more local and speak it lazily, you can soften the “w” sound.
subscribed, hey Brittany, I love your Beginner Cantonese series. I've been looking for something like it but couldn't find anywhere else. There's one thing you could do to make it even more perfect. Paste subtitles in Chinese Characters in the description under the video. I want to be able to copy the text to translate the words I don't know, and then make flashcards so I can learn from your content. I'm already fluent in Mandarin, and I know most of the characters, however only simplified. I have a Chrome plugin to automatically switch from traditional to simplified so it's not a problem.
Thanks for the kind words! I don’t know if it’s available where you are but TVB has an app where you can watch a lot of their dramas with English subs! It’s called TVB Encore.
as far as I understand, 華僑 refers more specifically to overseas Chinese but not born overseas. 竹升 (lit. bamboo pole) is a colloquial term used to describe overseas-born Chinese!
Chinese culture has deep root. Although Chinese culture lack of European enlightenment idea, but ancient Chinese culture is still very inspiring culture. I Ching(the book of change),the art of war,and Buddism, etc are very inspriring ancient wisdom.
I wanna ask if your parents are from Macau or Western shore of the Pearl River ( like Zhuhai and Zhongshan). Because when you say 嗰個 the tone is like people in Macau. This is one of the biggest differences between Cantonese in Hong Kong and Macau. HKers say it in lowere tone while Macaneses say it in higher tone.
hmmm, I'm not quite sure I understand what you're referring to... It'd be interesting to hear a sample! Any family I've been influenced by aren't from those areas.
Very interesting 🧐 ! So it appears that I am cutting off the beginning of the 嗰 tone 2 and just going straight to the high rising tone. I wasn’t aware that that was a Macau/HK thing! Very cool! For me though, it’s just a matter of emphasis. For example: 《邊度?》 《嗰度。》go1 dou6 《吓?》 《嗰度呀!》go2 dou6 aa3
@@cantobritt having English caps next to Chinese seems to capitalise the Chinese in my mind idk why. But to be honest, chinese doesn’t need caps, since it’s always spoken loudly and people sound like they’re fighting 😂

Hi Mo, I actually post the transcripts to my videos on Patreon. It’s a way viewers can support the channel so I can keep making videos. Thanks!
Chinese culture has deep root. Although Chinese culture lack of European enlightenment idea, but ancient Chinese culture is still very inspiring culture.
I Ching(the book of change),the art of war,and Buddism, etc are very inspriring ancient wisdom.

“On the making” - techniques of making the videos.
I want to learn the Cantonese phonetic scripts. my Cantonese is losing even though it is my mother tongue. you speak better Cantonese than me.
@@cantobritt check this out and you may understand what I meant
ua-cam.com/video/jLVPhTHqaOM/v-deo.html
Very interesting 🧐 ! So it appears that I am cutting off the beginning of the 嗰 tone 2 and just going straight to the high rising tone. I wasn’t aware that that was a Macau/HK thing! Very cool! For me though, it’s just a matter of emphasis. For example:
《邊度?》
《嗰度。》go1 dou6
《吓?》
《嗰度呀!》go2 dou6 aa3
@@cantobritt I think I use both tones and I am from Macau. And I heard many HKers just use the lower 2 tone.
加油 ADD OIL
I’ve discovered this is the most Cantonese thing you can do in the UA-cam comments 😂
加油JAMES - wish I could caps in character...
@@cantobritt having English caps next to Chinese seems to capitalise the Chinese in my mind idk why. But to be honest, chinese doesn’t need caps, since it’s always spoken loudly and people sound like they’re fighting 😂
BAHAHA 😂😂😂
*To people who pays for the top tier on Pateon*
Is the top tier (£9.60 a month) on Patreon worth it? All I see are 23 videos available with a couple other things.. I compare that price with what other things I can get and it doesn't seem worth it but I just don't know the quality of the content to make my decision
你把聲好聽,你的廣東話都好聽,多一種語言多一個世界,我的母語是香港語,識聽英文和國語,但可惜講英文很差,講國語更差。
