I said recently that Altior is probably Nicky Henderson's best 2m chaser that has ever trained, even above Sprinter Sacre.
uhegbu No way man! You can’t watch Sprinter Sacre in his pomp and say “altior would beat him”.. he wouldn’t even be able to use his finishing burst because Sprinter Sacre would have daylight between them; he had cruising speed second to none and jumped more fluently than Altior. The only way he would beat Sprinter is if they went slow and it was a sprint finish, but not with a proper end to end gallop, I just can’t see it :)
Brindle#warrior MOOR Absolutely! People don’t realise what he did in going with Saint Calvados, breaking him, then repelling some very smart horses who would have went past almost any horse in recent memory had they tried the same tactics. Altior was a beast here! But then the race may have left its mark a bit at Sandown.. in any case, he’s still a top 2 miler and the one to beat but I think he’ll relish the extra distance and hopefully the fire still burns for another season! :)

A proper old fashioned Champion! Love Altior! :) Hopefully he continues to excel over further this season, but even if he doesn’t, he’s an all-time legend and not far behind the mighty Sprinter Sacre :)
Going that fast with SC, made that mistake at the water and still powers up the hill, a actual MACHINE. Didn't look at his best but we're witnessing something very special with this one. ❤️👍🏻 🐎
Absolutely! Well said.. some people can’t read a race or know what they’re witnessing.. Altior was a f*cking monster here! He always had more in the tank even when he got headed.. it was just pure class showing, but hopefully we see him relish longer trips and at least beat Cyrname when they go head to head! A King George would look great on his CV and anything after that would be a bonus :)

If Altior wins the 2020 Gold Cup we should probably put him in the same breath as Arkle.. at the moment, he’s still behind the likes of Kauto and close to Sprinter Sacre, but a win in the Gold Cup would be extraordinary, maybe even the greatest achievement of any horse..

Nothing flashy just keeps winning. Never looks brilliant in his races but always finds a way.
Hells kitchen for the notebook....squeezed up coming round final bend stayed on fairly nicely. Finished 4th be interesting to see that at 2m4 next season

So Altior hung on grimly to defend the title, the first back to back winner since Master Minded. We also salute Tiger Roll winning the cross country race in magnificent style, in the style of a champion. Surely a contender for the 2019 Grand National but remember things happen, a real lottery, forty horses usually lining up tackling thirty fences. Joseph O'Brien had his first Festival winner on the second day with Band Of Outlaws winning a competitive hurdle race.
Hung on? He was pulling away at the finish.

Love to see him go for 3mile just to see is he as good over 2mile the horse is world class dar is noting will beat him over 2miles
Pretty obvious that as the horse has aged he needs a trip - just about every race he is going better at the finish than at any other time in the race. Could be a scary prospect for next season and I wouldn't rule out a tilt at the Gold Cup itself after King George glory.

That is the dream.. Wow.. but he’ll need some luck alright.. it’s like he’s conquered Kilimanjaro.. twice.. but now has Annapurna and Everest to face.. what a scary challenge.. but one he might relish! :)

Yes, made a mistake in the back straight but somewhat recovered holding off one time Tingle Creek winner, Politologue. Wicklow Brave nearly won a race in a close finish, I think it was the Coral Cup.
Trainer Nicky Henderson wanted to put it right following the disappointment obviously of former champion hurdler Buveur D'Air crashing out in the back straight twenty four hours earlier. One of relief all round.
Why on earth did Mullins race Min in this and not the Ryanair?

Un de Sceaux would have given him a real race. Workmanlike but he gets the job done. Reminds me of Viking Flagship.
@Neil Tucker Think he's only raced him once. But, Altior still would have won I reckon. That race he was left in the lead 3 out, jumped none of the last 3 fences well, headed after the last and still won. I can only see him being beaten in a slowly-run race where it's a sprint, or him being significantly below his best... until he gets old.

Very good but sprinter would canter all over him would not come off the bridle he beat better horses than altior and in his pomp never came off the bridle

I would love to see it, as Altior is one of my all time favourites; but he's eleven now, and I would like to have seen him race over a longer trip this year. Chacun Pour Soi looks formidable, so if Altior could beat him, it would be one of the great Cheltenham stories.
If that ground was good -ish Altior would have blew them away .. the helter skelter pace he follwed Saint Calvados .. made an error on the fence .. then fought with another gear to power up on soft ( soft heavy in places ) ground ideal for politolgue horse ground conditions .. but still had enough in him to pull away like Enable did last year Americas cup turf .. and that was a battle between two mares of john Gosedn horse and Aidan Obrien .. Enable had enough to power away ... likewise with Winx .. I did won over a grand .. but was a bit concerned about the ground - not what Altior would have preferred ... if Poloitogue goes up against Altior at Celebration Chase on good ground in April time .. he will bull doze Politigue .. make no mistake .. Sandown is also a track that Altior likes .. plus a good month to rest before going for race no 19 .. come on Altior !!!!!!

I think altior hates cheltenham... In other tracks he would beat politologue and scaue royal by 15lenthgs everyday of the week
@@robertmitchell8438 I'm sure he will go for champion chase again... no way henderson will send him anywhere else and take a chance... I think 2/1 is good value because on the day he would be 1/4 again

Bog Standard im sorry I cant take that comment seriously. A prime pre heart problem sprinter was untouchable. Altiors competition is weak to be honest and he really made hard work out of poor opposition in the queen mother. Sprinters competition was fierce and he made top horses look crap to be honest. Altior doesn’t get prime sprinter off the bridle its a non contest
Masal Bugdov because of a heart problem ? Prime Sprinter beat horses on the bridle that would of beat altior the other day.
Bog Standard Sprinter beat UDS way past his prime after a lay off with heart problems in the champion chase more comfortably than altior beat a past his best UDS. The level of competition is so weak compared to what sprinter was beating. The horses you mentioned are nowhere near the level of sizing europe, cue card, flemenstar, master minded and a prime UDS ( not the past it one altior beats ). Even special tiara won a champion chase when sprinter wasn’t around and he couldnt get 30 lengths from him! Im sorry but you cant seriously think those bang average horses that are getting altior hard driven to the line can even be seen in the picture vs sprinter! Theres a reason sprinter has been given a far higher rating.

Bog Standard you are missing the point. It seems you are hell bent on talking about a past it heart problem sprinter as opposed to prime sprinter. Sprinter beat an odds on UDS with a heart problem past his best with a lay off. The horses your talking about are absolute pony compared to what sprinter beat on the bridle. Sprinter beat champion chase winners on the bridle repeatedly. Again those horses that altior is hard driven against you would not see until after the adverts vs sprinter. Sizing Europe and cue card could potentially of beaten altior

Cyrname won’t go left handed so I doubt it.
Frustrating they didn't take Cyrname to Cheltenham. Seemed to jump very straight to me at ascot. So not sure where the adamant view he can't go left comes from. Certainly can't disagree 100pc with the original post, the proximity of the 2nd and 3rd has to at least raise the question and Nico did say Altior was knackered too after the race.

ntdforde I think Altior and Cyrname will meet at Kempton. Rating Cyrname above Altior was all about hype but would love to see them go at it.
