@@TarekDinaji They are harvesting the combs so they can remove the immatures (larvae and pupae) for use as food. Sometimes the adult insects are eaten, but in some regions (such as Taiwan) the adults may be incorporated into a kind of wine. When these combs are full of brood (meaning all the immature stages), they can be quite heavy, meaning there is a lot of protein available for the people harvesting them. The early pupal stages are especially desirable. Other species of hornets are also used, as well as the "yellow jackets" or species of Vespula which are much smaller than the hornets but make similar nests and are more common in regions having a more temperate climate.
@@bobjacobson858 As a beekeeper, this is fascinating. I am worried enough using my full suit when dealing with aggressive european honey bees, this looks a level above! I know from reading that eating honey bee larva was very common not that long ago. It appears these wasps are being cultivated in a big hive. They also seem to be catching quite a lot of live wasps, is that for the wine you mention?
@@mrcamouflagerblx7215 That's an excellent question. In this case, I'm not certain what will be done with the adult hornets. Use in wine is one possibility, another is that they will be cooked and eaten, but another may be that they simply want to get rid of them so they can harvest the brood without resistance. However, their technique for collecting the adults appears a bit cumbersome. I've collected many colonies of the European hornet both in the US and in Europe (specifically, in Spain), and I have found it quite easy to net the adults from the air as they circle around me when I approach the nest, and then transfer them into jars (if a chest of ice is available) or into a cage with a one-way (funnel) entrance. With three or four people working, it should be possible to collect essentially the entire field force within an hour. Perhaps they lack the materials necessary for making the best equipment. In any case, I've found that watching the insects to determine how they behave, and then using their own behavior against them to aid in capturing them has helped me figure out the most efficient means of working with them; this has enabled me to work with many species of bees and wasps. However, my own experience with Vespa mandarinia has been with workers (and a couple males) netted in the field, mostly on flowers (all in Taiwan), so the best method of dealing with this species at its nest may be somewhat different from that for V. crabro, but from what I've seen and heard from others, V. mandarinia is much like a larger, clumsy version of V. crabro although more defensive of its colonies. Some of the smaller species, such as V. velutina (now established in Europe and S Korea), are much more agile, reminding me of the baldfaced "hornet" (Dolichovespula maculata) widespread in the US and some of Canada, which I have collected many times.
