I have hauled heavy equipment for 38 years. You should X cross the tie downs front and back. Not only does it keep the load from moving front and back, it prevents any side to side movements. DOT mandatory for commercial loads

Cross strapping might work for static loads but definitely not for vehicles! If you lose a strap you lose the vehicle. Physics don’t work for vehicle tiedown!

have been towing 4x4's since the 60's through 40 states. my dad hauled heavy equipment through the 40's 50's & 60's and showed me the cross tie on the axles method which i have used every since. it does not really matter the brand or style of tie downs as long as their of good quality an properly applied. most state D.O.T.'s require 4 tie downs on the axles on the cross tie to prevent the load from dancing off the side of the trailer which i have seen a lot. Use street tire pressure when strapped. Trail tire pressure allows the straps to go loose.

Dean here, strap stuff down all the time, thing to note when using a ratchet type strap, dont pull the strap all the way through and tighten it up, leave the strap slightly loose and start ratcheting and let it tighten on itself it will have more to bind on too. just my .02

I used to haul A LOT of vehicles, and by far the best way is to use Wheel Nets. If you check with most 4x4 shops, or even towing companies, they can get you, or tell you where to get the ones for large tires. They're the safest, and even easiest/fastest way to strap them down.

25 years of heavy haul lowbed driving. I like how you have them tied down. I always tie down below the suspension, and yes, always stop and checked your chains (straps) within the first 50 miles, and every time you stop. I'll diet and work out with you, Kev! I could use it.

Try to cross them in the front make an "x".That prevents side shifting on bumps. You will see this on semi loads of heavy equipment. It pulls the main mass to the center of the trailer. Centers the CG.

Just my .02 as a rank amateur...
For loads as heavy as the Jeeps I always like to cross the straps for the simple reason that rain and ice can make the trailer deck slick, and I like having the extra side-to-side support. You don't want either, but a load shifting left/right will make the ride a lot more... interesting in a hurry than a load shifting forward/back.
Get some short axle strap tie-downs with the eyelets on each end. I use the eyelets built into the strap when I have to, but those are more prone to slippage if there's any extra strap in the loop around the axle or through the wheel - they like to close that loop tight on their own and introduce slack into your tie-down. That's also a common abrasion point, and replacing an axle strap is cheaper than replacing a ratchet strap.
If the velcro speed straps are long enough wrap them once around the short end of the ratchet strap before tying up the loose strapping to secure them permanently. That way they won't blow away and get lost when you're unloading the Jeeps on a windy day, and if you're like me it'll cut down on time looking for them when they were in your hand ten seconds ago while tying things down.
The whole setup looks awesome. It cracked me up how tiny that sweet gooseneck trailer made the 3500 look, though!

with the straps you're using don't forget to check each time you stop they will stretch always this is just because of the material they are made from. binders are better or get shock straps to eliminate the need to constantly adjust the straps.

Chains are the best way to tiedown anything. They do not get abrasions and they don’t stretch. Go to Northern Tools and buy the gold colored 70 series chains. Get 4 of them and 8 ratchet tiedown binders for chains. 2 chains and 4 ratchets per vehicle. Buy them once and you are done, buy straps and you will constantly be replacing them due to abrasions.

I don’t haul much anymore but I do have a few tips. Once vehicles are loaded air down tires strap over tires and and axles, then air up. This does two things much more downward force. Second thing is security, imagine you strap down over tires and axles without airing down first and during your trip a tire loses air now you’ve lost all that tension pulling the vehicle down. Love your content!

Strapping them like that will work but I've personally believe attaching directly to the axle in a x pattern is best. It doesn't only help forward and backward movement, it strengthen side to side as well.

    • @muddyWW
      @muddyWW 4 роки тому +1

But if 1 strap breaks or comes loose then the other strap isn't going to keep the load from shifting toward its mounting point on the trailer. Plus when the tow vehicle stops and starts the load can move forward or back because the "X" isn't as ridged as a straight strap.

KEVIN!!! Congrats on your first day of getting back in shape!! (round is a shape) Just a few things...Don't "DIET", make the commitment to make this a lifestyle rather than something temporary. Diets are temporary! Start slow and keep the weight and reps low for a while. Let your body get used to all the new movements and stretches. Play the long game. Stretch and warm up before AND after workouts. And lastly remember you dont need weights and workout systems to start. Crunches, Planks, Incline/decline pushups, stretching, knee ups, and dips.....you can do all of these out on the road (up against the trailer/jeeps). Have fun brother! :) ............ O, and remember Nutrition is half the battle! :)

KEVEN!!! --- Don't forget your --- Get out of debt plan you started in Hawaii... That means don't even go into places like "Rally-Sport Direct"... Resist the temptation to spend money on new toys... Then, only as you can afford to pay cash... Suggestion here... When you get tempted. Spend that money, or as much as you can manage on paying down your debt instead... That's one thing I tried with varying results dependent on my self discipline at any given time. I stand before you as an example. I am debt free with two properties, a fairly new backhoe, a nearly new Jeep Rubicon and an F350 FX4 all owned free and clear. If I can do it, so can you...

Funny that this came up not long ago between equipment drivers and auto haulers in our group. The consensus was that both X chains / straps are good for those that carry all kinds of different items. But if it is their toy they all would use wheel bonnets or straps. The auto guys made good points regarding why they are required to haul their loads with them. Because your load is repetitive, make sure the pull point was arranged for easy tie down. BTW the preferred bonnet for your Jeeps come from MACS made custom for your tire / wheel combo.

Also IMHO if you criss cross the straps you'll get less side to side movement and if you go from the bummer's or frame's it'll stop your suspension from moving while towing long distances but either way works as long as you check your strap's. Keep up the hard work up guy's;);)

Buy axle straps (8) to go around your axles. Get the 7' vehicle ratchet straps (8) with the big hook ends that have the safety spring "flap" and cross tie them down at the axles. If you tie them at the body anywhere they will move when the vehicle bounces as you go down the highway, this causes them to become loose and snap tight as this happens. I always tie down to the parts that are not moving on the trailer which in your case would be the axles. Just be sure to not pinch brake lines or cables. You can check online for load securement for equipment or vehicles under the Federal CVSA. When you tie down this way you see the vehicles on the deck moving around and bouncing which is normal as long as your straps are tight. You can buy stake pocket D-rings that will help when securing down.

I like those straps I bought 2 sets of high quality straps back in 2011 and they are in decent shape but it's time for an upgrade. I'm shocked at how long they lasted I use them almost every day on an open trailer.

Actually about a year and a half ago same thing happened to me. Saw myself in some pics. Embarrassing! So on the Keto diet I went and lost 17 pounds in 3 months. Now I mostly do portion control to stay close to my target weight. I have always worked out fairly regular (weights & elliptical). It is amazing what 15-20 lbs will do for your ego and photos. GO KEVIN!!

Kevin, I'll join you on eating better. I have been slacking. Also... if you're having trouble working out on the road, let me know. I have some info on workouts with minimal equipment if the portable gym isn't cutting it. I'm sure you're good but just in case.

If you get there with your load still on it's a win. As for me, I've been hauling everything from dirt bikes to desert race cars to jeeps since I was 16 (lets just say over 40 years) I have always strapped to the axles on the 4 wheeled vehicles but I always cross the straps. It just seems to make more sense to me. Haven't lost one yet.....

Mac's also offers some pretty slick weld on axle tabs allowing you to directly use the snap hook to the axle avoiding all strap contact with anything that could chaff it.

Just had to give ya'll a thumbs up, I don't subscribe to any channels but do enjoy them. I have recently purchased a jeep and watch a lot of what Jeep people do to there jeeps and got some ideas-it wont be a mall crawler not will it be a wall crawler(huge rocks) but will hit as many trails as possible. Thanks

Your strapping is just fine... if you want to be 100% "correct" you should X your straps.... ex left rear axle to right side... right rear axle to left side ect.... this eliminates the possibility of the load "hopping" sideways when you hit bad bumps

Hey Kevin, where you strapped down the step child is where I do on my TJ as well with no issues. I'm guessing your straps slipped in that adjustment piece on axle strap. I use fixed length axle straps so the only place there could be a slip is at the ratchet it self.

Hi Brit and Kevin I work for a towing company in Wyoming on I-80 and the most secure way to tie down a vehicle is to get tire straps you can get them on amazon and if you watch a video on UA-cam it will show you the proper way to use them or like someone else said you can watch Ron’s videos Midwest Truck he uses them a lot. The way your doing it should work just fine but the extra padding in your kit isn’t to protect your rims it’s to protect the strap I use those same straps with my medium duty wrecker for solid axle big trucks with my wheel lift to go around the axle and it secures it to the wheel lift. Since they loosened up I would try going around the axle instead of the knuckle and if you put the tag end back threw the strap instead of having it come towards you the strap will hold tighter because it wraps more around itself instead of in a line. The straps I’m talking about are 8 point tire straps and you can get them with the same hooks as the straps you have now and there quick and easy to use and it’s the most secure way to tie down your vehicle.

With the trailer setup you have you can take the strap attached to the driver side axle to the passenger side tie down of trailer. And the same on the opposite side so the load won't move sideways. At the moment the load is safe for forward and backward movement.

I drove a stake bed in college and straps will not come loos of done right.
    1. Go to the axles not the body or bumpers, the axles do not move with the suspension.
    2. Attach one side first, so front or back. Always start front and go forward and outwards at an angle. Tighten those.
    3. Go to back axle and go backwards and outwards at an angle. Tighten those.
The result will be the left front strap pulling the jeep left and forwards. The right front pulling it right and forwards. The right rear pulling right and outwards. Finally, you guessed it, the left rear pulling left and outwards from the jeep.
The result is 4 straps in an x pattern all pulling towards the center of the jeep. This creates up to twice the stapping force in every direction. This is because of the equal and opposite force from the opposing straps. You could sum the static forces to see the difference if you understand trigonometry and statics. If not just take my word for it.
Also having length in the straps would reduce the effects of them coming loosing. Think about it, adding an inch to a 6 foot straps wouldnt make a difference, adding an inch to 1 foot straps will.

The way you have the wheels strapped will inharently loosen over time. Make a Y shape with the strap. I like straps because they are light but chains are the way to go with the miles you guys will be traveling.

blazerberg so we’ve not had a single strap loosen at all. The ones on the tires have stayed the tightest

I use the basket wheel straps from the towing industry. I believe they are faster and easier to use and the basket straps secure your vehicle front to rear and side to side too.

Real straps with spring clips. Some states require them. Go around Axel tube so springs still work. Or use farm tractor tire tie downs. Love them. You did, buy good straps! Nice! Limit roll back. You did fine. I've watched professionals do it wrong. I like to weld in loops on Axel's if there is room.

Run the left side tie downs on the Jeep to the right side D ring and vice versa (cross the straps in other words). It keeps the Jeep from moving to either side. You can also run the rear straps from the vehicle in front to the D rings under the front of the vehicle vehicle in back - then the straps from the front of the vehicle in back to the d rings under the back of the vehicle in front. Cross them also.
