I went to Dawlish from the Midlands for the first time after a year passing and found it rather not tedious, good job I had MOT beforehand. Once you done it once you're more calm, and never hog the second land.
If you run out of slip road you must stop, you may not continue on the hard shoulder. Getting onto the motorway from a standing start might be difficult though!
Normally there are gaps to join the motorway. If you accelerate to the same speed as the vehicles on the motorway, you are effectively stationary relative to one another although you are all doing 60mph. The closer you can match your speed the smaller the gap you need. Other drivers will let a joiner in if they are at a very similar speed. I never expect people to move over to lane 2 as I match the speeds.
As soon as you can see lane one from the slip road you pick a gap where you can enter into lane one. That gap may be a few vehicles behind. If the gap is in front, you can pass them from the slip road up to the limit if it's safe to do so.
Passed first time today, 7 minors. My advice is don’t think you’ve failed even if you know you’ve made mistakes just keep driving as normal, The videos helped loads cheers 👍
This is really good timing for this video, as I’m heading out at the weekend. I’ve driven on the A1 a few times since I passed, but this will be the longest I’ve driven.
Fanstatic video travis, ive been waiting on these. I have only done dual carrage ways a few times and never a full motorway so this refresher is always a nice touch. thank you for this series
Great video, Travis. Thanks. I've been planning on going on the motorway up to my dad's one day, but have never gotten round to it. I've driven on the A22 and A3 many times, which aren't dissimilar to motorways as they both have a speed limit of 70 (although bits of the A3 and A22 go down to 50). This video helps a lot. Thanks very much.
@@JamesTravis, thank you for posting. I'm sure I'll get on the motorway to my dad's again one day. I've only been on it once and hope to do it again. Thanks once again
@@JamesTravis, thanks. You too. I passed my driving test three years ago today, but still watch videos as you never stop learning to drive, even years after passing your test. It's just coming off the motorway that feels odd as 40 mph feels so slow from having done 60-70 mph on the motorway
@@JamesTravis, quick update: just to let you know that I went on the motorway up to my dad's the day before Christmas Eve and it wasn't bad at all. Very easy in fact. Thank you so much for your video. The road I took to the motorway was easy as you gradually build speed up on it. It goes from 40 mph to 50 mph then to the left is the motorway. I'd say that the speed limit increases help hugely due to the increasing speed. Thanks again, Travis for posting your video. I now feel like I can do the motorway en route to my dad's. You're a lifesaver, Travis. Thanks, mate.
Where I live we have basically 4 motorways in close proximity of each other, M20, m26, m2 and m25. After I passed that week my partner took me to drive on the motorways and it helped massively. Now I have driven from Kent to lincs and to creamfields aNd back and I actually love motorway driving. I have come out of that same services and found it very short. I was taught to pick speed up in 3rd then skip to 5th when At reasonable speed. Do u do this or teach this to?
I don’t teach skipping from 3 to 5 with learners because they sometimes move into 5th too soon and it causes the car to slow down. Also it can cause you to use more fuel because the engine is working faster in 3rd for longer. But having all them motorways on your doorstep will get you to a high level and confident quickly. Safe driving
I've never been on a motorway after 1 in a half years of driving and getting on the motorway has me worried because of keeping to a high speed and checking for idiots that don't leave a gab because I dont like the idea of having to stop on the slip road
Can you do a video properly explaining congestion charges and how we can avoid it isn't made clear love how and in depth you explain things I'm sure you could shed a light on this topic. Many thanks.
I am rubbish at judging gaps when you come in when it’s faster speed what mirror gives the true poison of the car and how far away from me they are as I feel they will bang into me if I merge

Is there situations where the traffic don't pull out for you and you have to completely stop before getting on to the motorway?

@@Alan_Clark Got a related question - if the queue completely clog up the slip road, should motorists try the next junction?

If you have a dual carriageway near you, you could practice in advance to help you prepare. Good luck

I think it's easier to exit a motorway than enter one I think. 😊
Yes it is.
My first thought, I will happy to drive on that slip road 😭
this is great thankyou 😊
