i tested all of my hobonichi planners. I got several from hobonichi for 2024 and 2025. as far as 2025 goes, my yumi kitagishi weeks bleeds a lot more than my liberty fabrics weeks. my 2025 5 year is awful. i’ll only be able to use a uni jet stream. my 2025 day free avec is perfection. I have a hypothesis that it’s the old paper. nothing bled through and my fountain pen inks are glorious on it. it’s crazy how even within the various 2025 products the paper quality is so markedly different. my 2024 hobonichi products all perform better (excepting the 2025 day free, which, like I said, I think has the old TRP paper).

I tried using a TWSBI fountain pen with an extra fine nib on a 5-year Hobonichi (2025-2029) planner, and it bled through the paper. I'm really disappointed that I can't use my fountain pens with it, especially since that was my original intention. I feel like I was misled about the paper quality.

I’m so sorry. It used to be so much better. I think a lot of us are feeling that way right now though it appears the 5 year planners are the worse from what I’ve read. I did send off an email to Hobonichi hoping that maybe they can do something to address the issues but time will tell on that one.
🎉What ink did you use? I’m curious if it’s all fountain pens inks. My next experiment is going to be testing the ones I have to see if there are any that I won’t be able to use. I feel like medium nibs and larger are probably not a good option but I need to experiment to figure that out. Sigh wish this wasn’t a thing.

I'm a big time user for fountain pen inks and only use fountain inks for my planning. IMO I noticed a change in the paper in pretty much all the planners I bought for 2024 which is pretty sad. It's really not the same writing experience anymore and it makes me sad. I loved how the old paper had a smooth feel when writing and how the inks reacted differently when laid down on TRP back then. It was probably the main reason I got into fountain pens. Paper now seems like the manufacturer missed a step with the glossy top coat which is what prevented the feather and bleed through? Only issue with the older TRP was the drying time. However I loved the end result of my inks because of that! Thank you for sharing!!

@@magnolia_melody same! I got into fountain pens in part do to the paper in my planners and now I want to continue to use them but this next year it just doesn’t feel like that’s going to be as easy. The number of smeared pages I have because of drying time ahh ya let’s not think of that but I loved how everything looked once I figured that out. I do wonder if the big explosion of tomoe river paper planners on the market has something to do with the down fall. Maybe corners cut in order to meet demand needs because the old process took so long? It’s got to be hard on the business who bought the paper with certain expectations so they advertised it as such only to now start to get back lash. I feel like this will be a huge issue once people really start using their planners.

This video inspired me to swatch my 2025 Hobonichi A6 and I had no problems with any fountain pens (I only use F and EF). I had the same bleeding problem with the end of my mild-liner swatches, which wasn’t a problem with my 2024, though it wasn’t terrible. Disappointing that my most used highlighters have bleeding. 😢 I love hobonichi, but this year has been a disappointment. Last year, I could tell a difference in the paper. It was drier, so I used wetter inks no problem. This year, I ordered from the website all the prices went up,but I needed my 5 year. When I opened the box, there was a horrible odor, but thankfully, the planner didn't have it. My Sterling Ink 2025 A6 is having less ghosting and no bleed through with Uni Pin pigment fineliners, Energel Clena 0.4, Energel 0.5, M, F and EF fountain pens with a variety of inks, a very juicy Pentel Brush Sign Pen in dark purple, Mildliners, the A&O ‘mildliner’, Zigg dot in metallic and pastel, Crayola Super Tip (dark blue,) Paper Mate Flair, Gelly Roll 1.0, Uni Signo 1.0 (both black.) Absolutely fine on all of those pens with less ghosting than my 2024 Hobonichi Cousin (and no bleeding…it doesn’t like the Ziggs in the pastel, but is weirdly fine with the very juicy and pigmented darkest metallic purple 🤷‍♀️ I didn’t try a permanent pen. A black Tombow Dual Brush Pen did bleed a little and the shadow might have been called a swatch of very dark grey (on both SI and H.) I just received my SI A5 2025 Common Planner so I’ll do a similar test to see if I have similar results. I had no problems with any of my Gel pens on the 2025, and there is less ghosting/shadowing on the SI A6 2025 than the HC 2024, and I press very hard (normally) and was using a needle tip for all except the Sarasa Vintage 0.5 with no bleed through and less ghosting. I’m really impressed with the SI. To me, the paper feels much smoother and more ‘coated’ for the 2025 SI A6, and I prefer it much more to the Cousin. Hopefully I have similar results with the A5 SI when I get to pen testing it.

@@MyMagicalPlanner You’re welcome! I was curious since I had seen the issues with, in particular, the Hobonichi 5 Year 2025. I hope the A5 SI Common Planner does as well as the A6 did. I figured listing off the specific pens was more helpful than saying “my fineliners, gel pens and fountain pens worked fine, so yours must be a bad one,” because different brand pens do different things. I know several of the inks were black Kaweco cartridges, and some others were browns and a sparkly purple I was trying at a stationery shop, so idk the name/brand. A dip pen into black ink also didn’t bleed (and wrote really nicely! I’ve never tried a dip pen before! If I wasn’t the person who spills stuff all the time, I might consider sitting around with an open bottle of ink on my desk! 🤣 ) Oh, red Pentel Mattehop also worked beautifully (finally got to try those! I love them!!!) and barely ghosted. No feathering noted on anything, except the Tombow Dual Brush Pen, and it feathered on both. I’ve seen many people have feathering from 2024 with the Tombows and less issues with the Mildliners. I think Jet Pens has highlighters/pastels that they recommend on the TRP over Tombows or Mildliners…they aren’t a common one in the US…a Kokuyo brand, maybe?

Paper is such a big deal in planners and I think because of the inconsistency people seem to think it's all made up if their planner isn't performing the same way. I really hope some of these planner companies can apply some pressure to if not fix the issue find out what changed (besides the new machine ) because something has be it materials they can no longer get or something else. I am looking into the Rosey Life I didn't realize the paper was thicker but now I'm going to look a little more closely, maybe it is the solution and if so that's such an easy fix (well relatively). I just tested my new PaperTess designs 2025 planner, and the bleed-through was terrible. The end of a single swipe of my mildliners bleeds through it. My Heart of Darkness Noodler's ink bleeds through it like crazy. Tombows haven't bled thru yet, but I haven't tried more than one layer with them. I didn't have bleed-thru with any of these in my Wonderland222 last year that used the old TRP. I reached out to PaperTess.
