@@hobblekitty I know right.....I am a collector of vinyl for the most part. But i do still have my 90's collection of mostly country music. If an album gets a vinyl release i replace the cassette. But i have noticed that the 90's country music artists haven't been re-releasing their 90's stuff on vinyl. So i am always worried that my tape deck will die before my cassettes do.

I was reminded about how our former local classic rock station would also play Alice's Restaurant, usually adding a playing sometime during the day before Thanksgiving for those of us who only listened to them at work.

I had a storage box just like this that I got rid of. I used to have hundreds of cassettes and for every event, including birthday, Christmas, graduations, etc I got several. In fact Christmas 1989 I got several storage boxes for Christmas. The last few years I've been purging mine, first went those I never listened to or those I had doubles of. A few weeks ago I did something I never thought I would and that is get rid of tapes I used to listen to but replaced on CD. I figured I didn't need the cassettes when I had them on CD and sometimes vinyl too. Now the ones I have left are concerts I taped off the radio, radio shows I taped, and cassettes that I either never replaced or aren't available on CD. Eventually, I will digitalize all of the concerts and radio shows and post them online.

About cassettes, I would never say "Moment in the sun", because I thought initially, you would mean, that they were damaged.

I love Alice’s Restaurant! My dad has the CD, I have the vinyl. And my local classic rock station, WCSX, does play it every Thanksgiving. And I agree that the rest of the album is also quite nice. I especially like “Chilling of the Evening.”

Good episode...my longtime neighbor had a CD copy of that Billboard Greatest Christmas Hits back in the day, which I enjoyed so much that I dubbed a cassette copy for myself, but had no idea that both Little Drummer Boy and Please Come Home for Christmas were re-recordings. Also, many radio stations across the country still play Alice's Restaurant annually every Thanksgiving...in fact, being a DJ myself, I do so every year on my station! Not to mention I remember the Back to the Beach soundtrack from the Audio-Based Board Games ep, and the cigarette pack-style casing used for that Doobie Brothers release was pretty cool.
Oh, and very impressive that you not only recalled where/when you scored certain cassettes, but also some backstories on them...definitely some great stuff!

I feel ya on the flea bay issue. I've recently tried to order 2 different items and got the "your order was cancelled email", and the reason being I'm out of stock or the item is damaged. If the item was damaged, I wished the seller(s) would have contacted me about it cause it might be an easy fix for me.

Hey Benny, is there something in particular that you're looking for that you might be having difficulty finding ? Maybe your faithful followers might be able to find or possibly already have, and are willing to get it to you ? I occasional hit of the thrift stores and would definitely look into it. Anyhow, just putting it out there. Like these compartmental containers, I actually had a few but tossed them. They were in pretty decent shape but I no longer had any use for them.

Ben, i’ve been hoping forever and ever and ever and that you might do an episode of archive on bootleg cassettes such as those on Thompsun, Avidex and 747 label. I find them fascinating and am collecting them. Gotta love the unique, colorful clamshell packaging reminiscent of VHS boxes. I’d be so interested to hear about the histories and eventual fates of these companies if you can dig up any more info than I’ve been able to.

Alice's Restaurant is my dad's favorite album, I'd say. I haven't had a cassette collection since I was little, mainly because they'd all get eaten or destroyed somehow. And basically none of it was actual albums, that's how young I was. Just various Sesame Street and Muppet book and tapes and stuff like that. When I got older, I did have a few cassettes, but by then I switched to CD's because I just hated fast forwarding and rewinding to hear certain songs. Only thing I really liked doing was playing with blank tapes and recording weird shit.

My old tapes were full of Dr. Demento. I've been able to hunt down much of it digitally. I also had a ton of early 80s hip hop. I've found actual videos of them! I'm from Eastern Connecticut, we didn't get much airplay for rap. I went to a boys school, and they would snag some fresh shit from NYC.
I still remember my first two records I got as a kid. This was the early 70s... whipped cream and other Delights. Smooth, and sweet jazz. And Get Smart. The record was Get Smart's Greatest Hits I guess. I was big Get Smart fan. I did find that album here on UA-cam, and it's Eerie how much I remember.

I learned from Rocky Burnett that lines are toed, not towed. Mind you, Tommy James thinks that lines should be dragged. I still don't understand why John Hartford spilled ink all over some fishing line and hung it out to dry--unless he actually meant a line that was writ... Okay, never mind.

As for Popeye, i don’t know how much Hollywood legend you believe but Shelly just got finished with “The Shining” when she started on ”Popeye” and story goes she was more or less verbally and mentally abused by Stanley Kubrick. So just getting off from that and into a “kiddie” film with Robin Williams was a break she deserved...

I do want a copy of that.
Been a fan since I had chance to listen too it few years ago and the possibility of billy joel going hard rock or metal is very close on that album.
And Billy joel playing hammond organ would give Joh lord of deep purple a run for his money.
And plus if billy joel ATTILA would have gone big would probably make the stranger heavyer.
