I fell down in Dublin

  • I fell down on the street in Dublin after struggling to walk around. Sometimes it is hard to slow down and listen to your body but you have too. I felt poorly before the adventure began suffering fatigue and soreness from my trip to kiss the Blarney Stone. Adventure with me as I struggle to see the sights in Dublin, including Dublin Castle, statues of Oscar Wilde and Molly Mae, Christ Church, St. Andrew and more. Enjoy another day from my British Isle cruise on the Regal Princess.

Tony I give you huge props for walking 18,000 steps. That is a ton regardless of what anyone weighs. You are a class act and put out great content. Glad you are ok! You don't let the adventures stop you and you are seeing the world. Life is too short and no room for any people with negativity. You totally rock Tony and are a real asset to the You Tube community.

That's what I was thinking too! 18,000 steps in one day is alot for the average person. I know it would be alot for me and a big fat no from my husband (who is not overweight, but has a bad back).

Yep, I've got some extra pounds and a meniscus tear.. and 10,000 steps would be enough for me! So 18,000 is epic. Hope your knee is okay!😄👍

As a born Dubliner I was frankly amazed at the amounts of places you visited in less than one day. Trinity College, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Christchurch Cathedral, Marshes library, Dublin Castle amongst others. I would never do all of those in one day, way too much ground to cover but well done you managed it. Hope you enjoyed my home city!

I’m glad you’re okay. Descending stairs is actually harder on anybody’s joints, so it makes sense that it hurt more. Coupled with the previous day’s hike, and the climb… I’m happy you talked about limitations - most of us push ourselves naturally, and you’re in Ireland and you don’t want to miss this grand opportunity to explore, so it is TOTALLY understandable that you ventured out. I would’ve done the same, I’m sure. Again, glad you’re feeling good and are able to get around.😊

Tony, I'm a big bloke myself (110Kg or 242lbs) and I admire the way you get around and do all these vids. Sorry to hear about your fall. The same thing happened to me when the lovely Sandy & I were in Bali. One minute I was walking down some stairs, chatting away as I normally do, missed my step, then I was sprawled out on the sidewalk. I think I sprained my wrist as it is still sore after 3 months. Keep up the great work. Great to see Don, Jay and Jenny enjoying this cruise with you.

Your health is so much more important than seeing sites on your vacation. When my body tells me to stop, I immediately stop I don’t push myself and I am 75 years old. Definitely a warning for you. Slow down smell the flowers. 18,000 steps is kind of equal to 9 miles? Wow that’s a lot of walking you did for sure. I have a hard time walking up and down 10 stairs. Glad you enjoyed Dublin except for your little incident. Be safe we’re expecting you to keep on doing your thing for us.!!

So glad to hear you're ok!!
Great advice! Check your limitations!! Something I have to keep telling myself each day as I watch my dear friends and family move about having fun at a fast pace. Medical issues won't allow me to, but sometimes I forget and suffer the consequences.
I must say though that it is beyond rude for someone to comment negatively on your weight or anything else about you.
You are a wonderful person with a beautiful wife and an excellent channel. I really appreciate your content and your personality.
I've watched many of your videos but don't usually comment. Today I chose to say my piece.🥰

You nailed it Tony! Those people are rude. First of all sorry about your mishap. It is a perfect example of how people derive such glee from tearing people down. Shame on them. I for one admire your tenacity in getting out there and pushing to live your life with great experiences. I am 70 years old, 110 pound lady that was an avid tennis player at the time even with COPD. We were at the Rock of Gibraltar. We had taken the cable car up and decided to walk down (about a 3 hour cruising walk) to the bottom. It was wonderful. The next morning I tried to get out of bed and my legs would not hold me up without excruciating pain. When you walk down steep terrain the muscles have to work differently, not a normal stretch. The stairs probably did a lot and I am sure you were walking up and down hills also during your day. I was sore for days. I learned what could happen and so did you. Again, you GO Tony and don’t let the jerks get to you. Suggest carrying some Lidocaine patches or roll on and some anti inflammatory drugs with your kit. It helps. And keep up your travels. Am so glad you (or your camera) were not damaged severely. Hats off!

Wow ! Seeing all the comments I wonder if you'll even see mine!...Glad your okay also!!!...My husband and I started watching your videos about a year ago when we were getting ready for our Alaskan cruise..then we just loved your style and humor....We are thinking of taking this same cruise you are now on in Europe...we have been to Blarney Castle twice and gone up...I have kissed the stone...and yes it is quite an ordeal getting to the top( my older brother was with us also both times, his first attempt he turned around and went back) the second time he didn't even attempt it. So kudos to you for doing it all!....Absolutely agree with you a hundred percent on no shaming!...I wanted to publicly thank you for voicing that!!!....My step mother was very tiny and ( I really wasn't over weight at all) but she was constantly shaming me growing up....then my inlaws started in where she left off...now I really am over weight..Recently I was in a thrift store and this elderly lady out of the clear blue says to me you need to loss weight! And started writing down a book title for me to get!...I told her fat people don't need to be told we're over weight we already know it.
Further more I told her I've been called overweight all my life even when I wasn't until recently...But she didn't let up in trying to " fix" me....We talked about other things...she gave me her contact information in parting....The whole encounter very much troubled me. I me...finally, I ripped up the paper she gave me and decided with friends like this who needs enemies!!!...I don't need anymore people like this in my live...which is what I will tell her if I encounter her ever again!!!....God Bless you Toni!!!!..You be you!!!!

I think it's not so much the amount of walking, although that contributes as well of course, but more the pace of walking. When you're with friends who naturally walk much faster than you do it's hard to keep up with them, but you don't want to slow them down, which can easily lead to overexerting yourself.

Risking your health while traveling is definitely worth considering. We can only push ourselves so far. There are excursions that I used to do routinely, but now, at 55, I'll just say that I'm glad that I did them when I did! Risking an injury is so not worth it. I'm sorry you're dealing with an injury while on this fabulous cruise itinerary. Take it easy and maybe you can ice it while onboard.

Please stay vigilant and safe, Tony. I had a fall in Oslo, where I didn't pay attention to the uneven pavement which was bricked. Those falls can ruin a wonderful day, so stay careful and safe. The tour guide in Dublin pointed out the fine clothes on the Molly Malone statue, and his comment in thick Irish brogue was "Do you really think she was selling cockles and mussels?" Well, Dublin is beautiful. Stay well. Keep on croozin'.

You rock, Tony! You do two or three times what I could. I learned to listen to my body in Iceland. Good Lord...the amount of walking there... But once I said 'screw it, I'll do what I can and then sit when I want/need to', I found that I met some incredible people and had some awesome conversations with folks I met. I treasure those memories as much as my 'active' memories. At any rate, you impress the hell out of me. Glad you weren't hurt more seriously. (fwiw, back when I was thin, I was walking down the steps into the main dining room on the Norway. I don't know what happened, The ship moved up as I was stepping down. Or maybe my heel caught the edge of the step. All I know is that I went ass over ears down the two flights of stairs - and EVERYONE in the dining room saw me do it. I jumped up and found my fancy pants ripped at the knee and my knee already the size of a bowling ball. Perhaps not the best recommendation but a couple shots of aquavit later, my knee was feeling better and I was laughing with everyone. And, I had the prettiest purple bowling ball knee you've ever seen for the rest of the trip. All of that is to say - size doesn't matter. Accidents happen to everyone.)

I live in Dublin and have done for most of my life - I haven't been to some of those places... Fair play, you packed it all in.... and you got to tender in also - on the Friday before the tenders of most of the cruise ships were cancelled due to weather - so you got lucky... the annual mini (half) marathon was on also - so you got a LOT more people in the city than usual, hence the busy transport. But glad you got to see as much as you did... don't let the fall stop you from dropping by the next time you are in port... The Dirty Ol' Town was delighted to see you, thanks for stopping by.

Sorry for your fall Tony! As one who has taken a tumble on a trip...it's tough! Glad you were able to get up and carry on...I ended up going via ambulance to the hospital to await surgery on my elbow. No worries though, I sent my husband along our planned sightseeing places just so he'd have something to do and not have to just wait for a surgery day/time with me. In the end it all worked out but falling is never fun. I have a habit of always looking around at things and not paying attention to unfamiliar roadways...nowadays I TRY to take it easy and as you say, 'pay attention to my limitations'! Again, glad you are OK. P.S. Still love touring with you wherever you go! :)

It’s very rude. I am full figured and run 5 and 10k races. I breathe heavily also. I am in shape, Howe I suffer from obesity. It is a disease and society and the medical community are barely coming around to this now. When someone eats right and works out harder than the skinny person next to them, there’s a problem. Don’t judge someone for their size. You have no idea the struggle or how badly we speak to ourselves. We don’t need your negativity on top of it

Can relate. I've fallen on a bad cobbled footpath, hurt my knee and hand and at 68, glad I didn't break anything. Being overweight and struggling to walk has spurred me on to do something about it, so that I can continue cruising and exploring into my 70's.
Several times I've turned around and gone back to the ship missing out on walking the port cities either due to extreme heat and humidity or pain. No more, I'll struggle through if it kills me. Even added my diet regime to future cruises right through into Nov '24, that's how I'm now viewing my life change.

Hi Tony, so first I'm happy you're OK! While you're of course right, we should all listen to our bodies, I also know it's easy to get caught up in the moment and want to push forward. I'm so thankful the damage was minimal and you'll be OK.
Secondly some people (hopefully mostly out of concern) say terribly hurtful things. I've 100% been in your shoes and felt the sting from someone telling me I'm overweight and should do something about it. Omg really? I never thought of that! It's not like I struggle with it everyday! 🙄 People if you feel the need to say something like that check it. Not helpful.
I'm here to say I admire you and to an extent live vicariously through you. I love travel and do so as much as I can but wow some of your adventures, this one included, are mind blowing and way beyond anything I've done so far. Dublin, wow so beautiful!
Keep up the great work and keep being your wonderful self. Thank you.
    Jim

Glad to know the only thing that was hurt was your pride. I've been on the weight loss struggle bus most of my adult life, and know first hand how much it sucks to be heavy and still want to go and do all the things I would like to. Keep pressing on and enjoying all that life and cruising has to offer, and I'll keep watching! 🙂

Tony, glad you didn’t hurt yourself too badly. It is a sad state of affairs when complete strangers feel it is okay to shame us. We seem to have lost our ‘filters’ and ‘decency’ when it comes to judging people.
As a fellow ‘fluffy’ guy I know the struggles of losing weight and getting in shape. Would those ‘armchair quarterbacks’ be able to do the 18,000 steps you did? I highly doubt it, yet they won’t congratulate you on this achievement. Well done my friend! From a fellow Ottawan like Don Terris. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

That picture of you guys with the Molly Malone statue is priceless! I think I have a similar pic of myself from way back in 2004.
I hear ya about overdoing it on vacation. We recently went on a transatlantic. Our first stop was Malaga Spain, where my husband and I ended up walking more than 7 miles. I'm not really in any kind of shape to do this, but I did it! I even endured being pig snorted at by a guy behind my back while I was climbing steps on a castle wall. I don't know why some people are so rude!
Our second stop was Valencia, where we again walked several miles. Wore me out, but I'm glad that my legs were able to carry me all that way so that I could see all the cool stuff that I saw!

Just glad you are okay! I have issues with my feet...some days I have little or no problems...other days it is torture to walk. Was on a cruise that stopped in Charleston SC and I had signed up for a walking ghost tour. About 2 blocks from the ship I decided to forgo the tour and head back to the ship. I got concerned that I would be far away from the ship and would need help to get back. So I listened to my inner voice went back. I was cruising solo so I would have had to depend on the kindness of others.
Glad you are ok...I know your knee is probably hurting as I write this but hopefully you will be able to enjoy the rest of your cruise and ports of call. Be safe!

Oh man Tony!!!!!!!!!!! Dang. I fell in Ft Lauderdale night before our Odyssey cruise and had huge hematoma migrating down my face the entire cruise! Tripped trying to step up on a curb. Fell forward and hit my forehead on a 2ft thick cement pillar, ouch. At least you look pretty good. It took 4 weeks for the blue patches to go away. That's what convinced me to buy the electric wheelchair. But at 73, I gotta learn that time marches on...or rolls on! LOL
