7:53 Norwegian here. No, we absolutely do not get a cut (like they apparently do in Alaska). About 3% of the earnings is allowed to be used on the national budget. You will not believe the waste. It is massive. On top of that we are one of the highest taxed people in the world. I have woken out of the slumber that our people are in to accept this status quo, but to few have. I wonder what our actual wealth fund would be if we just bought gold instead. Then we at least could prop up our Zimbabwe currency. For those interested, check out the Norwegian currency compared to any other currency on the planet. Why is our currency so weak?

@@mac6452 We export a lot of oil, so this is not a wealth fund made from taxing people like he said in the video. But taxing corporations are in the end the same as taxing people anyway, so I guess he is right in a sense. Norway taxes oil production about 70% or something close to that. That money is then put in to a pension fund that is only allowed to invest abroad. That is the literal name of the fund in Norwegian. We also export fish and some other products like aluminium. Lately we also started to export power to the continent (England/Netherlands/Germany) at great detriment to our industry and domestic cost. Our energy cost vent from about 20 pence/20 cent per. kilowatt hour to 100-120 on average. Three times more at the worst. That was the one competitive advantage out industry had, and now it is gone. Because of politics and "green" ideas.
Similar for Denmark. 5.5m people taxed to death and forced to overpay for wind electricity, meanwhile it's the EU's biggest oil exporter with per capita resource weath in the world top 20. Sick, yet somehow sold to the rest of the world as the way to be.
Alaskan here. Yes, I won't complain about a $1600 (pretax) check this year. But it should probably be triple that! The state legislature gets to pick it clean and vote on how much leftover they want to give us. They pay themselves first. We get the crumbs. Look at how much revenue commercial fishing and oil generates. It's massive. Yet they piss it away on ridiculous pet projects. Prices on everything are high up here. The PFD covers my heating and home insurance. So really it's about a wash compared the L48. The population is flat or shrinking even with the PFD.
Sidenote- I had a thought on prices up here. Yes, some of it is shipping. But wages up here are decent. I can't help but wonder if there is a wage-price spiral going on. Much of the products and resources leaves the economy so there really isn't a productivity benifit to drive down prices. There's just lots of wages sloshing around, driving up prices. I've been looking for a bargain on a motorcycle for 3 summers now but prices stay high.

Norwegian here, 7:30, if we see any of the profits? No, we do not. Usually they're spent on some administrative costs or public project. Although these projects usually entail "enviromental" projects of green energy or some decadent projects of art.
What is funny, is that even though it has increased in $ it has increased even faster in norwegian kroner. Probably offset by the devaluing of currency at a greater pace. Inflation remains a problem, but I'll never see any help from the fund. Unless we start helicopter-dropping currency like others.

I have an associate who was in the keizaidoyukai- an economic think tank/task force. He/they travel around the world looking at other "systems". Some years ago, after visiting Scandinavia, he came back saying they wanted to apply systems there in Japan.More of the "what can we learn from them" idea. Now in Japan, many rural company presidents are only in that position because their fathers started the company so they "inherted" their position rather than "earning" it. FWIW

For a Wealth Fund to have any chance of being operative, surely First and Foremost All National Debt should be paid off !
Not necessary, but there should be de minimis at least a fiscal surplus of 8 or 7 years out of the last dozen years. Also a current account surplus for that same period of time. There is a need to keep a national debt market ticking over for national strategic purpose in case of unexpected contingencies. 😊

Yes & No. ESF is not necessary a Soverign wealth fund. It's small approx 200+ billion USD & a significant portion/fraction approx 20 to 25% is already spoken for or otherwise committed already. It more a rainy day fund to be deployed at the discretion of Tptb to come to the rescue if Congress is intransigent or unwilling or slow to move.

Tom from Norway here. No, we do not receive a penny in dividends from the "oil fund". The fund is invested abroad (us dollars). NOK has fallen 20-30% against the dollar in recent years. The Norwegian state can withdraw 3% of the fund every year for consumption (paying people to stay at home, "sick", unprofitable wind power development, etc.). A weaker NOK against the US dollar means more NOK for the government to withdraw. You get the picture...
