- 18th - 24th August 2023 saw a trip to North Yorkshire and the renowned North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
The week's visit coincided with the railway's intensive summer timetable - which featured up to six locomotives in action per-day - transporting tourists across the rugged North York Moors between Pickering and the picturesque seaside town of Whitby.
Motive power was provided by a selection of the NYMR's operational Steam & Diesel fleet, including; BR Std 4MT Class 2-6-4, No.80136; LMS Stanier 5MT Class 4-6-0, No.5428 'Eric Tracey'; BR Std 9F Class 2-10-0, No.92134; and British Rail Class 31, 31128 'Charybdis'.
Filmed over the course of several days we see all the aforementioned locomotives in action - tackling the steep gradients of the Moors from various vantage points and locations along the route.
Locomotive List;
Steam:
BR Std 4MT Class 2-6-4, No.80136
LMS Stanier 5MT Class 4-6-0, No.5428 'Eric Tracey'
BR Std 9F Class 2-10-0, No.92134
Diesel:

Hope you enjoy!
I’m glad you get a break from the layout and model railway exhibitions!! I’ve never been on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before and love what I see!!
Glorious weather, beautiful train, gorgeous scenery!! What more could a guy want when on holiday?!!
Couldn't agree more! There was a exhibition on in Pickering, but decided to give it a miss. Was on holiday after all
One of the best videos, Callum, I have seen in a long time. Beautifully filmed and edited and just the right length. Thank you very much. Cheers, Bob
Cheers Bob. Glad you enjoyed it. Really is a superb line indeed.
A beautiful video. Nice to see a preserved railway where the locomotives can be worked hard for more than ten seconds.
Indeed! Was my first visit and certainly didn't disappoint. Will hope to get back there at some point.
Great video of the Nymr, lots of variety including my favourite 5428.
Indeed! First visit and it certainly didn't disappoint. Will have to get back there at some point
Great video - thanks for putting that together and sharing it - very atmospheric!
Many thanks Simon. Glad you enjoyed it
A Lovely selection Of Locos with Lovely Views Callum 🤔🚂🚂🚂
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
What an absolutely beautiful video. Beautiful settings and so many great shots of the trains and coaches.
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
brilliant
Cheers
What a brilliant video of the real thing, another one of yours that I will save in my files. Nice to see that there was not too much smoke and it could have been a model railway. The Diesel Class 31 was adding more pollution to the atmosphere than the Steam ! What do you think ?
Definitely got Heartbeat vibes with this legendary route, though I couldn’t spot Claude Jerrimire Greengrass lol 😆😉. Great footage once again and I’m glad you were able to get some good lighting with the ol sun coming out haha. That starting cry from Grosmont up the 1 in 49 sounded great with the Class 4 and 5 locomotives. Even the 9F was being put through its paces and by all accounts, very clean firing done by the locomotive crews, no wasteful firing there.
Keep well old mate and thanks for sharing.
Regards, Caleb
Really is a superb line. Will certainly have to get back there at some point. Ha, funny you say that, it went in every time I tried to film/photo the 9F (one shot was unusable). They certainly have to work for a living. Hopefully the sound files will come in handy one day
@@SDJR7F88 yes, I’m sure the sound files will come in very useful. I’m currently making a 9F freight video for Devizes as the 9Fs appeared on the Branch during the 1960s in what was hoped to keep the branch from closing. The 9Fs hauled cement trains with those interesting presflo wagons. But unfortunately, it didn’t keep the line from closing and it’s something they’re definitely regretting till this day as more people live and work in the Wiltshire area. I’m hoping as with my other videos I can use your sounds? As usual, with full credit to you of course, I always put a mention and link to your channel, my friend. Your real engine sounds have been invaluable to my GWR line episodes, and have been a hit with the subscribers. But of course I can never ever forget your fantastic contribution to getting my channel to 100 subscribers, I was just grateful to have a few in the beginning lol 😆, you were my seventh one from memory, back in 2014. I’ll always be grateful to you for getting my channel out there, that drink I’ve always offered you will definitely be in order when I get over there lad. What is your best pub? We’ll go there as soon as I arrive in the UK, lunch/dinner will be on me, mate. PM me sometime on Messenger if you ever want to talk further. Cheers!
good vid nice trains thanks lee
Cheers
If things are getting a bit much for you as in you’re last reply to me recently on your last Exhibition Layout Video I can understand that, but please you must continue with the live stream videos you have a fantastic following. Regards from Ron 🚂👍🚂
Cheers Ron. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, as I've decided to take a break for making videos. To be honest, it's been quite nice not having to worry about filming/editing stuff. I also cleared a number of events from my calender (September, October and November are usually very busy months for shows and other events). I was even asked to film the OO9 Society's 50th Anniversary Show at Statfold Barn the other weekend, which I politely declined. It was a shame, as it looked to be a an excellent event, but I certainly felt better for it.
Nice to see the driver of 5428 not faffing about coming out of Grosmont. In my opinion that how you get a run at then bank! 👍🏻 Get that driver a beer!
Really was quite the performance!
I thought they were going to swap 31128 for 31466 as 128 is on its last legs, but they've decided to keep that as well. I suppose they need extra cover while 825 and 76079 are out of service
Indeed, believe 825 was on a rest week during my visit, as it was running the week prior and the week after. Was most excited about seeing the 9F and Black 5, so that worked out well
Whitby depot did get three (new) 4MT tanks in 1956, but they moved on after a couple years, because they got DMU’s instead.
So it’s pretty cool that the NYMR ended up with two 4MT tanks.
Didn't know that! Certainly works for a living on the steep gradients over the moors that's for sure
