Yes, it has been pointed out to me many times now that the time Cass Elliot may have spent in the basement of the Canyon Country Store has possibly been exaggerated over the years by past owners of the store and used as an urban legend and a badge of honor by those who would possibly benefit from that legendary association. I have found an equal number of sources that say she did indeed stay down there in her very early days in Laurel Canyon, but the total amount of time she was there varies from source to source. Other sources have claimed she was either not there at all for any reason or that it was possibly only less than a week. I can't 100% verify any of this without there being some level of doubt so I'm sticking with the story in the video, and no, I'm not "taking it down" as some have asked. Mistakes happen and history gets a bit hazy over the years. And in case anyone wants to know... in the actual basement of the CC Store there are posters claiming that Cass "lived" down there and they'll all tell you that she did as well, even though most of them aren't old enough to have actually been there in 1965. I even had a brief email exchange with Owen Elliot (Cass' daughter) on facebook about this very topic and she claims that the story has been exaggerated and most likely did not happen in the way it has been described over the past 55+ years. My apologies. This would not be the only mistake I've made in all of this, if it's actually incorrect. The amount of information to be found and sifted thru is just staggering.
It would be interesting to know if Cass ever had mail that was sent to her (including the original envelop ) that would have a post mark on the envelope, at that basement apt. I know you indicated people took things that belonged to her but probably not mail. So I wonder what happened to personal belongings like mail, or even bills and driver's license that could have had the basement address on these items?
Would be interesting to know, but yeah, those would probably remain within the private hands of family members like her daughter. Either that or just gone with the history of other everyday items from those years. I get the feeling that she probably wasn't even there long enough to warrant the idea of having the address of the store sent out to anyone else. She made friends in the area very quickly, like Barry McGuire, and she probably ended up staying with other people within just a few weeks of getting to LC.
It's hard to get it all right since it's been so long and even the celebrities themselves can't remember what was what. I've done research on it all for a book I wrote... I know the owner, Tommy, and he showed me the storage area apt down stairs and it's hard to know if she actually lived there for a short time - but - there is a ton of amazing history there and I love it. Was just there 2 nights ago eating at Pace. Best Salmon you'll ever eat!

Just came across this series. Loved episode 1. 71 years young and lived through this magical musical period..still do..looking forward to watching the rest of the series…

No arguments there about the music of the 60's. It was a magical time and the music seems to have stood the test of multiple generations and will be around forever in one way or another. Thanks for watching!
I think the best period was 1966-1976. Only drawback to some 60s music is a thin recording quality and dinky-sounding drums. Sound quality started to improve so drastically starting in about 1969. Compare the sound of the first and final Beatles recordings; the quality evolution over a mere 7-8 years is utterly jaw-dropping.

I had to start from episode 1, this fabulous historic account of the canyon, the most talented and unique people who lived and loved there . a great time for the music that seem to be so magical . I spent my teen years living in Laurel Canyon, it was amazing, keith Ellis, bass player just out of touring with Spooky Tooth rescued me on the East coast brought me to LA, he had worked with many successful well known groups, a highly paid session musician, we married , moved to London, wow, looking back brings happiness to my heart, then, some memories of strange things. I guess I was one of those strange things. Ah hahaha It was a whirlwind of music that changed the world !
That sounds like an exciting time to have been alive and right there in the middle of all of it. Do you remember what street you lived on in Laurel Canyon? I've probably walked by your old house a dozen times, lol. I think I ended up walking every single road and pathway in that whole canyon during that summer I was making this series. I love the area and I love the old vibe that still lingers there.
I recently turned 70 and lived all of this time with my own experimentation! The predictable losses of so many of my youth musical heroes (most recently David Crosby and Jeff Beck) and my recent retirement have kindled an exploration into history of the most influential era of my life. David Crosby said in his 2016 autobiography "Long Time Gone: the autobiography of David Crosby" that he and Cass were "heroin buddies" on several occasions in the book. Thanks for such an insightful video. I enjoyed it very much and will continue the series.
Yeah, I was sorry to hear about some of that going on for a while over there and especially with those two. By the summer of 1969 the darker part of that scene really came back to haunt a lot of people who didn't realize all the real dangers to it and the people involved in it.
Billy, these Laurel Canyon reports are great, many thanks. I had to slap myself around for living in So. Cal. for 34 years and not once taking a drive up there. I moved there in '71 right behind the Woodstock happening and the whole folk rock thing, fresh out of the Air Force duty. I did have a ball when stationed in Honolulu, a friend I worked with had an extra ticket for The Doors concert (circa 1968)' he told me it wasn't just a concert but a happening. After watching Jim Morrison almost run off the stage I was hooked. Being a musician, what a treat to watch the other guys just lay down the grooves, just like their records. Firs t time I saw stacks of Acoustic amps and cabs, wow! Also saw Jefferson Airplane, Tommy James, Iron Butterfly, and loudest of all, Blue Cheer, scared us to death when Steppenwolf took same stage a nd about 500 kids rushed the stage, yeah, protest songs! Love your album reviews. Tom.
Thanks for sharing that with us, Tom. Actually had to look up The Doors concert in Hawaii and found out that it was July 20, 1968 at the Honolulu International Center. According to some newspaper articles there was an incident where someone set off a huge string of fireworks in the audience just before they kicked into Light My Fire. And as in typical of those times, all the reviews of the show were negative and some even claimed that Morrison was "dull" and "unexciting". The Doors were way ahead of their times back then and people could just be so dumb, I guess.
Great stuff!. I've long thought that John Phillips was a complete git, especially after reading Dave McGowans 'Wierd Scenes' book. Looking forward to Ep 2.
Beautiful story of Cas sad in the end glad she had a daughter i think Cas had a pretty face amazing vocals ...beauty doesnt always come with talent ... ♥️ 🌸 r. i.p Cas 🙏 2023..
After watching the 1st episode I have a new found respect for Cass Elliott! I can’t imagine what she would have done had she not passed too early. Thank you for the insight into an amazing lady. I personally believe she was an outstanding artist as well as beautiful lady!!!
the fact that she run a drug den for years???? yeah you keep the respect for that and all the other degenerates that abused kids that were run through the canyon...not saying cass abused any kids but she was at parties where it happened..this has been confirmed by several people who were at these gatherings..
it's interesting to know that many of these music super stars had parents that were high ranking military parents. Morrison's father was involved in the gulf of tonkin incident.
Really enjoy getting to see this area and it's history. I came of age in this great area. I had many of these album covers. I read them over and over. Very nostalgic!!! Thanks ❤❤ P.S. today's kids unless they get into modern vinyl just can't appreciate the beauty and creativity found in album covers! Many showed shots of Laurel Canyon on the inside covers. If you were lucky enough to buy an album for $7.99 at 11, you called your best friend to come over and listen with you. It was an event!!! My first concert was HERMANS HERMITS from the UK. (my son was astounded that The Dave Clark 5 were as big as The Beatles in the day!)
That was a very nice, respectful and loving tribute to Cass Elliot. Almost all I've ever heard are unkind, mean spirited things. It's amazing how we no tolerance for making fun of someone for the color of their skin, sexual preference, etc. But it's still okay to make fun of someone for being overweight, and most disregard the fact that these people have feelings and are hurt by such hurtful, unkind words. I read several biographies about her, and the M&Ps, and I developed a tremendous respect for her as a singer, as a person and a vocalist. She doesn't get the credit she's due much of the time. I love your honesty about John Phillips. The guy was scum.
Just watched episode one which I found very informative. I love Cass’ voice and she was gold for the Mamas and Papas. Saying she was larger than life is no insult although she might take it that way. Obviously a very powerful woman and many owe much to her. Looking forward to the entire series!
Cool, Ron. Thanks for watching and make sure you use the playlist function and all of it will stay in order for you from start to finish. ua-cam.com/play/PLMGnMaveEzfma6qiSlhb0EOmvKyNSpg2c.html
This is even more fantastic than the first one Now you have just gone and taken it to a whole nother level! Excellent work! I'm going to binge the next few episodes! How interesting that John Phillips would implicate Cass in the Tate murders! What an incredible asshat.
Haha, you're way too kind. I had to go back and touch up a ton of things in those first three episodes, and so I may as well just give them all a good makeover. By the time I got to about 15 episodes edited, I started to find out what was working and what wasn't. Plus I found a few mistakes with some dates and even misspelled some names and stuff, new data, etc. So yeah, it's all been a work in progress. Thanks for watching, again!
Thank you for speaking so highly of Cass and bringing focus on her. She seemed like an amazing woman and I hate when I hear people only talk about her weight, especially from her own band members 😡
Yes, I agree. She was quite phenomenal, and I was happy to highlight her here in this first episode. She comes up again later in at least two other episodes and in those she is shown to also have some weaknesses and was prone to making a few bad mistakes along with some lapses in judgement. But it also shows that she was just human and had frailties just like the rest of us. It's just that she was in a place where she was wealthy and had great influence with her other peers in that community. It put her in a few compromising situations. Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Here's the playlist function if you want to see them all in their proper order. Some have been re-edited and it caused them to run out of order. ua-cam.com/play/PLMGnMaveEzfma6qiSlhb0EOmvKyNSpg2c.html
Thanks. This one had a lot of nagging issues with it and there were complaints that just kept coming at me, so I decided to deal with all of it. Traffic noise (had to EQ the crap out of those parts to get the noise level to taper off), words on screen were too many and too fast, and also additional info needed to be update and added. The biggest problem with that traffic noise, other than the fact that it is IN Los Angeles, is that for me to be anywhere onsite at that Canyon Country Store and out on the front porch I was never any further away from LC Blvd. than just a few feet. It's thick as hell. And it was hard for me to even know how much of it was coming into the camera mic until I got it all home and then I heard just how freaking loud it actually was during the editing process.
I was there! It was the highlight of my trip to the LA area. As it’s so happen the owner of the Canyon country store happen to be there and he gave my friend and I a tour downstairs of where mama Cass stayed for free when she first came to the canyon and he played music from the Doors, Love Street which was right across from the store and he said if we cut the guy that owned it now at the right time in the right mood, he might let us come in and give us a tour, but unfortunately that didn’t happen🙁 I waited my whole life to get to California and then when I finally got there, I was just in love with Laurel Canyon and if I could live there, I surely would❤❤❤ oh and of course he played The Mamas & The Papas song, young girls are coming to the Canyon. It was just so cool. I wish I had been able to be there during that very special time in history.
Billy, I watched the entire Laurel Canyon series that you uploaded some time back. Excellent work. I am 63 years old and grew up with all of this music and the artists. I was a kid in the 60s but I am a drummer, keyboard player and a little bit of a bass player all because of these people and their influence of music in my life. Duane Eddy is another big influence as well. This was a great video about not only more of the fascinating Laurel Canyon, but a more detailed video about the artists, namely Cass Elliot. Your videos about Laurel Canyon, as well as other people's videos, really sparked a flame of fascination and interest in me to want to see more videos and documentaries about Laurel Canyon and the awesome artists that once lived there. I am looking forward to seeing more of your re-edited versions of your already awesome documentary about Laurel Canyon.
Hey, so glad to hear all of that and thanks so much for sharing. I love all of this music too (obviously!) and ended up as a musician probably due to The Beatles. I think there are probably thousands of people out there that would probably say the same thing about them. It would really be nice to have another musical renaissance like the one they had here in the 60's. :)
Just found your videos. They are amazing and I love how respectful and knowledgeable you are. Thank you :) (edit: John Phillips was a nasty piece of work - love you Ms Elliott)

🪦 RIP Cass. I get the impression that Cass was a very sweet hearted person and also a bit of a lonely/tormented soul. If I thought my house was haunted by Cass Elliot, I wouldn’t be afraid of her AT ALL. If I lnew it was actually her, I’d probably enjoy having her around and I would talk to her like we were friends. John Phillips was definitely NOT a good person and, in fact, his daughter MacKenzie Phillips (Julie on “One Day At a Time”) had a lot of not-so-nice things to say about him.
Thank you, I think I have seen this before. But, it’s so good I’m rewatching. I’m obsessed with Laurel Canyon (that time period). Maybe because my parents favorite movie was Hair☺️. Oh I just started reading My Mama Cass by her daughter Owen Elliot-Kugell. It just came out. It’s good. ☺️❤️👍🏼
I wish I didn't have to sleep or go to work at a real job. I'd be cranking these videos out at a rate of about 3 per week. Now I'm lucky if I get one done in 10 days. But yeah, more on the way!
John Phillips was a sick, sick man! That is for sure. And certainly behaved like an asshole & worse apparently & definitely according to his daughter Mackenzie as we all unfortunately know. I have read about the abhorrent way he had treated Cass Elliot..not too surprising I suppose based on all reports of who he was. I do feel badly for his kids bcse he truly gave them a lot of pain & longing for the father he could not be for them. It always made me feel good to know what a close relationship she & Michelle had. And I know she pined for Denny which was unrequited love at least romantically. So happy that she had her baby girl though - who seems to be a lovely human - which is no surprise either!!! Thank you so very much Billy for this wonderful trip through Laurel Canyon...you & memoryfield have done such a stellar job with this series!
Well thank you so much for saying so and thank you for watching! Very much appreciated. We seem to agree on John Phillips. He seemed to treat many people that were close to him very poorly. Such a shame, really.
Thank you, I will! Lucky for me I don't live in LA but actually a much quieter and laid-back place. It's nice to visit over there but just a bit too hectic for my liking on a daily basis. Thanks for watching.
I had one more comment regarding your “Love Street” episode when you walk up the stairway called “Tavern Way”. My family settled in Park City, Utah after emigrating from Denmark back in 1872. Anyhow I was born there and spent about 15 years living in the town before we moved in 1980. The town is completely different from back then but getting to my point, there were numerous steep stairways around the town leading to paths so one could travel to other sections of the town. As a kid I would play on those stairway and they were a blast!!! Seeing that Tavern Way stairway reminded me of those days.❤
Did any of those staircases in Park City look like the staircase in this photo of memoryfield in Park City a couple of years ago? secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.226/29d.a5b.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/7R31666EDIT-1-1024x991.jpg
I am going to search through my old family photos for some. I have a bunch of photos of my family in PC when the town was just still a mining town and it looks completely different. There is a “park” up by the Silver King Mine named after my great uncle Loran Larsen. It is along one of the ski runs, pretty awesome view from there. Sure do miss that place. I left Utah for good after finishing college and have not been back except to visit family. Unfortunately 2005 was the last time I was there. I grew up roaming the hills around the town and hiking all over that section of the Wasatch mountains, which happen to be one of my favorite spots on earth. Guardsman Pass was another place I roamed freely in nature, making myself home sick! I currently live in Oregon which I find quite beautiful as well but it is not Utah. If you are interested in seeing some of the photos of PC back from the 40-70’s, can email you them. I find the contrast from today’s town and the past quite interesting. Oh, my wife and I are truly enjoying your Laurel Canyon vids, so many cool stories and connections!!!
Glad to hear all that and so happy that you found us here. We visit Park City several times every year. Really awesome place but way too expensive to live there! It's always growing and it seems to change more and more every year we go there.
Apparently, it was pretty well known that she used to pay visits to Spahn Ranch and the Manson Family. I'm sure that also put her on the police radar after the August '69 murders. Great talent and sadly gone way too soon. Thanks for this episode. Look forward to the rest of them. Will have to pay especial note of episode 8.

Being there in that place where they all walked and hung out with one another was a really great feeling. I loved being there, especially in the parts that were a bit more quiet and peaceful.
I could listen about Cass Elliot all day...I remember the Scooby Doo movie episode with her stuck in a candy factory..these green monster men were stuffing gold in the chocolate bars and sending them to Rio de Janeiro...not kidding .... She was always first to joke about her weight I think before other people did but she was awesome just the way she was regardless. Love the video💗🍄🌻🌼

Love all your videos Billy! They are such a treat! I appreciate all the hard work that you’ve done to bring this videos to us! One bit of John Phillips history is that he was having dinner with Roman Polanski after the Tate/LaBianca murders, and while they were preparing the meal, Roman threw a meat clever at him narrowly missing his neck. Phillips was in shock and asked him why he threw the clever. Polanski replied by asking him if he killed Sharon. The motive being that when Roan and Michelle were in Europe they had a brief affair. Michelle and Sharon were good friends, and Sharon was heartbroken when she found out, but Sharon forgave her and they would speak to each other throughout Sharon’s pregnancy. John was angry with Roman but they became friends again after Sharon’s funeral. Roman even admitted to breaking into Phillip’s car and put a chemical on seats and floor that shows up bloodstains. Just thought you’d like to know, if you didn’t already!✌️Cathy
@@memoryfield yes Bill, not crazy but insane stuff, Polanski and Phillips admitted to these facts during interviews. With friends like these hate to see what their enemies looked like, or do we already know? 🤔 scary stuff!

Another great episode and I'm hooked on this series! Cass Elliot WAS The Mamas & The Papas and because of her larger than life persona and vocal talent she could totally eclipse John Philips and his narrow bias!! Thanks for bringing the memory of her to life in this video!

A lovely tribute to Cass Elliott.
Sheesh. That Keith Moon coincidence is bewildering. Very well done sir.
Thanks! Yes, that Cass Elliot/Keith Moon connection is just mind-blowing.
Same place Led Zeppelin played on Sept.6th, 1970. It was cool.

Terrific stuff! Sensitive, thoughtful, respectful...human.
She was beautiful in every aspect RIP Cass you are loved💋🌹❤️
Great stuff!. I've long thought that John Phillips was a complete git, especially after reading Dave McGowans 'Wierd Scenes' book. Looking forward to Ep 2.
WONDERFUL beginning to a fascinating series. This is HISTORY!
Thanks Abby. Much appreciated!
The tribute to Cass Elliot was beautifully done. I agree with you on John Phillips the man was a monster.
What a voice. I loved her ❤️
Yes, quite a talent. Gone too soon.
Beautiful story of Cas sad in the end glad she had a daughter i think Cas had a pretty face amazing vocals ...beauty doesnt always come with talent ... ♥️ 🌸 r. i.p Cas 🙏 2023..
Outstanding episode. Watching them all on a beautiful Sunday evening in Treasure coast Florida
After watching the 1st episode I have a new found respect for Cass Elliott! I can’t imagine what she would have done had she not passed too early. Thank you for the insight into an amazing lady. I personally believe she was an outstanding artist as well as beautiful lady!!!
We totally agree! Cass was a world-class talent and left us way too soon.
the fact that she run a drug den for years???? yeah you keep the respect for that and all the other degenerates that abused kids that were run through the canyon...not saying cass abused any kids but she was at parties where it happened..this has been confirmed by several people who were at these gatherings..
I've really enjoyed your series on Laurel Canyon. Thank you!
Thanks, John. Really glad to hear that. More to come later!
it's interesting to know that many of these music super stars had parents that were high ranking military parents. Morrison's father was involved in the gulf of tonkin incident.
His report of being attacked by two Vietnamese ships literally was the excuse to start the Vietnam War.

What a great miniseries Billy, thank you!
Thanks for saying so and we're so glad you found us here!
Thank you for the history❤
We had a blast doing it. We didn't make the history here but we're happy to revisit the times. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this!!! Loved Cass ,,,what a Beautiful Talent!!!!
Most satisfying, informative, clearly narrated. And those wonderful and not so great times living at that Canyon.
Thank you so much!!
Glad you enjoyed it. We had a lot of fun making the series and digging thru all the history. Would have kept going, but just simply ran out of time!
Second time around...enjoying this series very much.
@@memoryfield awesome! Yes I agree. I’m on ep3 now!
Awesome! Here's the playlist function if you want to see them all in their proper order. Some have been re-edited and it caused them to run out of order. ua-cam.com/play/PLMGnMaveEzfma6qiSlhb0EOmvKyNSpg2c.html
Beautiful tribute to her❤
This edited edition has a great flow. What a surprise. Slowly moving through the LP series. TY!!
Awesome movie👍👍
Watching again in November 2022..I'm 40 years old. Love the late 60s California Folk/Country Rock scene
Just stumbled upon this and I’m SO glad I did!! Very tastefully done and so interesting 🎶
Thank you 🙏🏽 🤍🕊️
Just found your videos. They are amazing and I love how respectful and knowledgeable you are. Thank you :) (edit: John Phillips was a nasty piece of work - love you Ms Elliott)
Awesome, and thank you for your comments. Much appreciated and so glad you found us here.
❤great presentation and research.. I was a photographer on local newspapers on Merseyside when the Beatles returned . So the music and personalities grew with me for so many years.....
Thank you so much for your kind words. Big Beatles fans over here too in this house.

Thank you, Billy! Looking forward to the next episodes.
Well, thank you for saying so. So glad you found us here!
I found this very entertaining as all these musicians I listened to as a teenager.Thank-you so much!!
Our pleasure! Thank you so much for watching and glad you liked it.
It’s good. ☺️❤️👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for your comments and glad you liked it enough to watch it twice!
Enjoyed this. Looking forward to the rest of the miniseries.
I wish I didn't have to sleep or go to work at a real job. I'd be cranking these videos out at a rate of about 3 per week. Now I'm lucky if I get one done in 10 days. But yeah, more on the way!
Great documentary, some fascinating history, can't wait to watch the other episodes :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your take on the scene and the times and the musicians!!! Excellent!!!
Thank you so much for the compliments and happy to hear that you enjoyed the series!
Thank you so much for making this! Just what I wanted to see.

Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you for the great history keep up your great work stay safe out there on those crazy roads
Here's another one in Park City secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.226/29d.a5b.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/7R31793-1024x584.jpg

Thanks for watching! Much appreciated.
Very good! Thanks for posting! 👍♥️

It's an absolutely fascinating and captivating video! I love the history of music and laurel canyon in particular! look forward to watching every episode and maybe go there some day! Thanks for the time and effort you put into this series!

I've been watching several of your episodes now and what you're doing is absolutely great! This is the way it should be done. I live in Europe but I wish I could buy a ticket and go there today. You really make history come alive. Can't wait for the next episode.

Really good work Billy , for some reason i have felt close to all these people over the years
Being there in that place where they all walked and hung out with one another was a really great feeling. I loved being there, especially in the parts that were a bit more quiet and peaceful.
There wont ever be another time and place with people like them, and it sure is sad
you get a thumbs up just for the opening music bro! Love the series!!!!

Much appreciated!
Yes, she was definitely unique for sure. A very special person with an immense talent. Gone way too soon. :(
Such an interesting video!
Ohh to be there, during the 60’s
I understand Cass. We both have food issues.
Oh thank you sooo much Billy, for revising and expanding this piece, I can't wait for the rest of the series. I am this generation, I loved Cass so much my whole life, and your added information lets me know more so much more..I am LA native and LOVE the era (I was there, yes it's true)
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching and for commenting too. Much appreciated!
Came across your video's while watching on my tv and was really impressed with your research and presentation. Really impressed with your music as well. Keep up the great work. Peace
Well then we're so very glad you found us here. Thanks for watching and thank you for your kind comments. Peace back to you!
Whoa, that's some crazy stuff!
@@memoryfield yes Bill, not crazy but insane stuff, Polanski and Phillips admitted to these facts during interviews. With friends like these hate to see what their enemies looked like, or do we already know? 🤔 scary stuff!
Billy--Can you make an episode about Pam Courson, Jim Morrison's common life wife? Show us where she lived, and tell us about her life after Jim died! Love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Well, it's a possibility but if I did it would be a long time before I ever got to it. I'm going to re edit most of these other episodes first and fix all the little problems, issues, etc. and then keep going with the new Vinyl Review series too. Lot of work! Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments and interest. :)
@@memoryfield Thank you. It’s been a treat watching your videos.
Another great episode and I'm hooked on this series! Cass Elliot WAS The Mamas & The Papas and because of her larger than life persona and vocal talent she could totally eclipse John Philips and his narrow bias!! Thanks for bringing the memory of her to life in this video!
Our pleasure. Thank you for watching!
