I remember first watching this episode, thinking "Oh, it's another flash back for one of the characters... who is it though?" then the shaking ceiling from the explosion, and I was like "WAIT, NO.... THAT'S INSIDE THE HATCH?!" One of the best "WTF" moments ever.
I remember watching it too and getting goosebumps and always wondering what that song was but after the ending of lost I feel so pissed of that none of it even mattered
They ended it with a cop out. They kept promising to explain all the mysteries of the island, and very clearly advertised it as a show being all about the mysteries of the island. Then near the end they tried to pretend like the show was *only* about characterization as they threw everything out the window. I appreciated it for the ride, but the ending was basically a dream sequence when they said they wouldn't end it like that.
This was about the peak of LOST. I was so thrilled they were finally showing us what was in the hatch, and answering questions and introducing new questions. But I regret that it went downhill like it did. I didn't even bother watching the ending.
+Impervious The ending was, in retrospect, the best way they could have ended the show. It was no way that they were going to be able to explain everything. Could it be deemed as a cop out? Yes, but really, what other way could they have ended the show? After they explained everything, how could they have ended it? They were in a tough spot. So I agree with what you are saying but thinking back on the many mysteries the show had, it was no way they could have explained them all.
I will never forget how obsessed I was with this season of tv in the mid 2000’s. It consumed my life. The hatches. The videos. The theories. It was my world for so long
I love how as soon as the explosion happens, you can kinda tell exactly what’s happening, but it’s like you don’t want to believe it until the camera pans and the music swells and they actually show it
I can’t think of anything other than Pedro Pascal’s smiling face. I’ve also never seen this show. Although I love Once Upon A Time and didn’t the same people make both shows?
That's why I'm here in 2023 because the dumb Barbie movie has this song all over the place and I've gotta show my kids that this is Desmond's workout song
Lost is so ingenious, so ahead of its time. This show rattled me to my core. I'm on my 4th rewatch now. Everytime I finish it I want to start right over from the beginning. No show has ever come anywhere close to having that kind of effect on me. It's such a good show, it almost makes me sad, knowing there will never be anything better. There's plenty of other shows I really enjoy: Breaking Bad, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire, Westworld, Homeland, The Wire, Better Call Saul, Billions, Person of Interest, Stranger Things, House of Cards, Game of Thrones, etc....These are all fantastic. Something about Lost though, it's the show of all shows. The sheer mystery of it, and how that mystery unfolds endlessly from start to finish. The fact that it's not even Rated R and is the best, speaks to how truly genius the story and suspense is. No curse words or forced sex scenes to keep people intrigued, unnecessary with this, epic masterpiece...........
don't you find at the end of the day the mysteries were all just a load of nonsense? Clearly they had no idea where they were heading and overall it has great characters...great individual episodes but a terrible overall story.
@@jasewildheart no, i agree they didn't answer the questions we wanted answered but it was a brilliant show nonetheless, the story is amazing, i just wish it ended well
I love the way they start the second season off with a mysterious scene that seemingly has nothing to do with the show or any of the main characters. They hide this characters face to heighten the mystery. The use of an obscure song from decades ago to set the mood. The use of the instrumental music after he realizes there is a disturbance to increase the tension. Then the final reveal where we learn that this is what's in the hatch, the answer to the mystery that every fan wanted to know. This scene is brilliant.
I seriously can't stop rewatching this scene. Desmond's routine, the music, the darkness of the hatch, the close up at Jack and Locke at the end. A work of art.
I love this scene. I'll never forget the shock and how I jumped up and down yelling, "he's in the Hatch!!!". There'll never be another show that had so many great shockers that you never saw coming (or I didn't see coming). I think the reveal that Locke had been in the wheelchair and that Sawyer was actually "Sawyer" were great moments, too.
I try and picture myself when I first saw this scene: Who the hell is that? Where the hell are we? What the hell is that medicine? What the hell is he looking for? You go from wondering who the guy is, to somehow building a sort of trust with this mysterious character when something goes wrong and he’s trying to find out what it is. Breathtaking The mystery and suspense were so unforgettable, I can’t believe people said they didn’t like this show. It’s a treasure trove of cinematic craftsmanship
It's just trippy that it's morning inside and Desmond is going through a morning routine, and you think it's morning while watching but then the door blows open and it's night outside.
I never really understood that before. That just goes to show how much pushing the button has fucked up Desmonds sleeping patterns. Must've been like jet lag when he came to the surface.
Henry Ian cusick played Desmond perfectly, I love his acting especially in the 100 as well, but his acting in lost takes the cake it’s just mind blowing how amazing this show was
He keeps going thanklessly and alone, with the fate of humanity on his shoulders. It's a testament to the human spirit and an incredibly powerful and beautiful scene.
By far the very best introduction without revealing a character known on any TV show. There is just something about how this is set out, something about the story of the Dharma Initiative. Just awesome
My favourite scene of all for a long time. I miss Lost so very much. People go on about Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad and they’re excellent! No doubt. But Lost came way before and I grew up with this show. It was generation defining!
I dont know why but seeing this scene for the first time, was caught in some special feeling who how simple, harmonized, disciplined and effortless Desmond was living, for me was enlightenment.
It's hilarious. I was into this show as a teen and followed it as it aired while I was in college. Desmond was my favorite. Now every morning for me plays out like this opening scene. Protein shake and all. This show is life changing. Haha.
Greatest show in the history of the world. My wife has never watched (or even heard of) LOST, and just finished watching S1 with her. Its so cool having the chance to re-experience this magical show with someone else. Watched all seasons solo many years back.
This moment and the season 1 finale changed TV forever. The only thing anyone could think about until this episode was “whats in the hatch”. This is literally the reason every TV show has tried to capture that wow factor that Lost had. Archive 81 is the only show thats twist had my jaw on the floor anywhere close to this.
Fucking hell time flies.. I still have the DVD sets, individually colored sleeves with the special disk that nobody even watches. I don't watch them anymore because lost is on hulu, I mean hell I don't even remember the last time I've even popped in a dvd. Will our children even know what a DVD is in a decade or 2?

As individual sequences go this was one of my favourites. Along with: 1- Ending of season 1 where Jack and Locke are looking down the hatch. 2- Start of season 3 when we see the plane crash. 3- The end of Tabula Rasa, the beautiful Wash Away is playing and then the camera dollies around Locke sitting on the beach and the music goes all sinister. Actually, damn there are too many. Great show.
What about when Locke has a flashback when he was denied a tour in Australia because he's on a wheelchair and then he says his famous "You can't tell me what I can't do" and then shows how in the middle of the plane carnage he's out of his world as he's able to stand on his feet once again
