    Introducing the God-Mother of Hip Hop (made popular), or some may say Commercialized Rap Music, and the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Sugar Hill Records - Rap Music's 1st record label which successfully birthed the musical artform to the international public in 1979. Ms. Sylvia Robinson made Rap Music popularly known so that it could become relevant in the Pop Charts - and so it could be sold, bought and make business, jobs and careers around the world. Her efforts has played a major role in the musical artform being the multi-billion dollar industry that it is today!

    Someone needs to do a serious Sylvia Robinson biopic; not a cheesy tv movie, but a real movie like Scorsese or Tarantino. There is enough story there. Her impact on American culture is underrated.

    1:44 - 1:50 .....the narrators neglected the fact that this woman was playing a Gibson Les Paul nine years BEFORE Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Peter Green made the guitar popular again after a production hiatus between 1961-68....this woman was wielding a Les Paul on stage BEFORE it was considered the "ultimate rock guitar" and discontinued in 1960 because Gibson thought the guitar was a failure......serious omission in a music documentary, very serious.

    Sylvia produced and played guitar on Ike & Tina Turner's record "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" in 1961. It was nominated for a Grammy in 1962.

    • @alancassaro8400
      @alancassaro8400 4 роки тому

      No, no. It was Mickey Baker and Tina Turner singing for a demo to be presented to Sylvia in the hopes that it might get Sylvia to sing with Mickey again. You know it's Mickey singing and talking on it by comparing his spoken part of "Love is Strange" to this- it's the same voice. Mickey also played lead electric guitar on it. Ike liked it so much that he put his name on it and released it as Ike and Tina Turner and it was a big hit. The duo Mickey and Sylvia DID do a version of it, but it was a flop.

    • @bluesugar58
      @bluesugar58 4 роки тому +1

      @@alancassaro8400 Where did you read that? Mickey and Sylvia recorded a version which was recorded in 1960 but not released until like 1990 on a compilation album. Sylvia said she played guitar on Ike & Tina's version and did the production. Mother of ROCK & ROLL!!....She played a Les Paul guitar in the mid 50's along with her duet partner.
    You know the history of the Les Paul guitar? ....they didn't become iconic until the mid 60's after they got discontinued between 1960-68....she was playing one on stage a decade before that.....Respect....Mass respect.

      @@joellovelace The student often finds more meaningful forms of escapism - ideological escapism. Students are for justice, Che Guevara t-shirts, and affirmative action. And the socialist organizations are waiting to recruit. The student’s “rent-a-crowd militance for the latest good cause is an aspect of his real impotence.”[141] The student serves the cause and the cause serves to justify the student’s subservience.
      The student activist consciously aligns their thinking with what they perceive to be that of an oppressed group (which they may or may not be a member of). Now they can speak for that group and articulate the desires of that group, usually phrased as demands made of the authorities. Every person, every group, must be represented.
      Representation is at the heart of the logic of modern politics, and its so-called enemies uphold this logic better than anyone. Such thinking is institutionalized among the academic Left, who are proud of their broad curriculum which includes all sorts of women’s studies, queer studies, African-American studies, etc. As long as students learn to demand “justice” for everyone, the possibility of revolutionary change can be ignored.
      Through appeals for justice or equal rights within the system, the academic Left perpetuates the system and its moralistic logic. And since academia is virtually defined by the dissociation of thought and action, no revolutionary theory could possibly thrive in this context; conversely, it is here that revolutionary ideology is at home, an object of passive consideration

    The Big Payback by Dan Charnas tells a more insightful view of Hip Hop music and also details a limited history of Sugar Hill Records and the spending ways of Joe and Sylvia Robinson. Their lack of promoting their artists also was the downfall of Sugar Hill records which was known for ripping off their artists along with Joe Robinson's need to depend on white mobsters such as Morris Levy. There is no doubting her influence in helping to bring Hip Hop to the world with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. But, she and Joe were not saints. They even turned down the promotion of the first hip hop concerts refusing to work with icons such as Ricky Walker and ignored Spike Lee's first goings on with movies. Sylvia and Joe were like a lot of music industry people back then, in it for the money. Called making money. Yes, Sylvia influenced the growth of Hip Hop and rap music. We all should at least thank her for that.

    She's pretty. I like that this morning I've gotten a chance to hear her story. I've heard of her a few times but this is my first time getting to know her more. I'm 23 and I knew about that song hip hop from 1979 that Sylvia was reciting since I was a toddler. I always loved that song, just didn't know it was by sugar hill. This was before all the other raps came about. A legend.

    Thanks for this. I read some of the comments and all I can say is that, speaking from experience, the music business is one the of the grimiest there is. To all the haters, I wonder where Hank, Gee and Mike would be without Sylvia? More artists need to learn from this sister and turn the tables on the industry instead of being victimized by it.
    P.S. If all she had ever done was "Love Is Strange" she'd still be legendary in my book. Thanks again.

      It was said in a more detailed documentary that she had musicians that actually played instruments to the song's melody to a "T"and re-recorded that Good Times song/melody and did not directly sample the music from the Good Times song. I think when N. Rodgers first heard it, he thought it was a straight copy when he decided to sue her/Sugar Hill records.

      @@18hallmark,
      Grandmaster Caz gave away or loaned Big Bank Hank his lyrics!🤦‍♀️. Back in the 70s, Grandmaster Caz was not knowledgeable about how much of a huge profit loss this would be for him by giving away his lyrics without his name credited/stamped in writing to the lyrics🤦‍♀️. He learned that and knows that now 😄.

I grew up a few miles away from the studios in Paramus NJ - though I had no idea at the time. It was 1973, and Miss Sylvia's "Pillow Talk" always reminds me of a high school romance with a girl from Teaneck NJ, whose birthday just happens to be today, 02-12, and who lived about 1-1/2 miles away from Sugarhill Studios. This is an excellent video I really enjoy it. I always get teased about Sylvia Robinson. My first name is Sylvia. I always get tease with Sylvia Robinson because we share the same name. Plus "Pillow Talk" is a sexy song and I am sexy, the teasing. Thank you for sharing. Now, I understand her accomplishments more.

    First of all much respect to Sylvia Robinson and all that she has done for the music industry, but I just want to shed some light on the DARK TRUTH of the Sugar Hill Gang records. After watching "I want my name back" on Netflix The original Sugar Hill Gang is still trying to get 30 years of ROYALTY payments that have made the Robinson Family very wealthy for illegally having ownership of "Rappers Delight". Mike Wright (Wonder Mike) and Guy O'Brien (Master Gee) speak out on this many times!

    @baldrottweiler, thanks for the correction. I've been apart of the music industry now for a total of over 25yrs. and I've never heard of this great woman. Even when I was in the Audio Institute in N.Y.C., taking music history, was this ever taught. I guess because she's a woman in a "man's industry" (so to speak)? Even online now, there's very little mention of this lady. Btw, from my research, it appears that her name is spelled "Zell Sanders." (A.K.A: Zelma “Zell” Sanders). Label started: 1956

      Yes, to answer your question about The Mother of Hip-Hop, having a movie made about her... her family was recently on The Breakfast Club, radio show, and they said a movie is now in the works for TV. This interview was in February 2017.

    @werewolfmanjackal: Love On A Two Way Street, was not mentioned in this video, so U writing comments here as if it was, is a fallacy within itself. It's clear U have an axe to grind, which I can understand. For after over 25 years in the music and entertainment industries, I can identify with your bitterness, disappointment and anger. However, this video was made with the utmost intent paid to diligence in gathering and reporting the facts. We apologize for any inaccuracies.
