Great video. I recently had a queen marking video that got lots of views by non bee keepers and about 100 people commented that I should be using a color that's easier to see than red. I'm happy with the Posca, still using the red pen from 4 years ago and it works fine, but having said that, next time I need to buy some I'll try these.
I bought my first beehive 3 weeks ago. The queen has not been marked. It took 3 attempts for me to find her. On the 3rd attempt I made decision I will be marking her so that next time I will find her quicker. As I have not had any markers I decided to use waterbased primer which is almost white(warm white). I was afraid to hold her long so I waited just 1-2 minutes and obviously it did not dry well. Bees removed somewhat but still some pait left and it is easy to find her. The problem I have is that the color did not match the year. The 2nd problem is that I'm afraid that markers will dry out in 1-2 years and become useless and you need to buy again. So I start thinking just go to hardware store and ask some powder they use to make color paint. Mix the primer with that color could be an option. But I'd rather learn how to keep the markers so that they won't dry. Actually, vaccuum sealer could solve the problem. BTW I also like white. I wonder if your markers still work and have not dried
The 2.5mm tip version of these pens are still available on Amazon. Probably better for my purposes than the fine tip ones. Absolutely agree about the Posca pens. Sick of marked queens suddenly being unmarked. Queens marked in fluoro colours are going to be such a boon when swarm season starts!
Those look like they will work great! BTW - I use a 2 color system as well. I know what year the mark is. Either the bees or winter will take care of any queen older if I don't get a young queen in there.
I got a couple of the Toma pens that you’ve reviewed before. They seem really bright (got green and blue). Not used them yet, they were really thick on the nib so I just cut them down so they fit through the crown of thorns
Great video as always. How did you find the Uni Paint Markers over time? Have only started using them, they last longer than Posca anyway but don’t know how much better yet!
Hi Lawrence, yep been there done that marked the queen gone in on the next inspection and yes I can’t find her those lovely bees attending to her have gone and cleaned all the ink off damn frustrating 😂.

My vote.
Use pink instead of Red,
Use fluorescent instead of dull,
But I would stick with the standard year colour.

Been using Toma for at least 5 years. Fine ip. Easy to use.

Thanks!
Many thanks for the super sticker, Andrew. Very much appreciated :D
I have used The posca for years and they are quite well. The beekeeper have to be skilful with any kind to successfully mark the queen bees.
guess I lucked out, bought a 36 pack of oil paint pens on amazon for less than 30 Canadian Dollars , worked perfectly.
Looks like you have created a run on Zayer pens. Amazon have sold out!
Ha. No way 😳 I'm sure they will be back in stock soon 😀
Do you need upper entrance on poly hives for moisture thx
Oh yeah… I had to rewind a little to see the stone hive. Lol
If you wash the queen with toluene first the Tosca paint never comes off
My eyesight is getting crap, so I only use White and record against the hive log
Thanks for the info bro!
Oh was that a teaser for the stone hive 🤞🤞
:o I didnt even see it till I saw this comment. That will be a pretty cool video
Great spot :D
Old eagle eyed Rich!
@@BlackMountainHoney eye like eagle eyed action man me
Pink is way better than red
White is great until they have been on the balsam lol
