      Yes, we went there on June 26, but the salmon was late this year, unfortunately we did not see any bears. Plan to do lottery for the brooks lodge next time in Mid-late July.

    Wow thank you for that. I found a few videos of bears about a month ago and I really would love to see them in the wild. Before I saw these animals I had one thing on my bucket list. I'm from Kentucky and my only wish was to see my Wildcats play at home. Now I have 2. I would love to see grizzlies in the wild. I don't know if I can ever do it. Probably not but it is now a dream of mine. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      Definitely bucket list worthy! Not sure of your situation, but friends of ours in their 70s just got back from Katmai (day trip) last week. They saw 16 bears at one time! If you are able bodied and can get the money for it, you should go! 😊

    Well done! Love This enchanting place! Otis IS the King of Katmai! I was there Aug 1 of 2019 for 4 days. That heat wave was brutal on the bears! However, the Salmon ran longer at the falls too. Lucky for us.

      Thank you. And we completely agree with you about Otis! I can’t imagine Katmai without him. We would love to go back and do a September trip.

    Curious, did the pilot explain why you could take pictures from the back, but no picture taking allowed from the front ?

    • @CarterChronicles
      @CarterChronicles  Рік тому

      Sitting in the front, you were the co-pilot so you couldn’t be distracted in case of an emergency.

      We were there in July of 2019. July is a great time to see the bears, but also September.

    I put my name in for the lotto at the camp, but I did not know there are day trips there? Do you think a Nikon 200mm F/2 is large enough to get closes ups or do you need a 400mm F/2.8???

    • @CarterChronicles
      @CarterChronicles  Рік тому

      Ours was a day trip that started early and ended early evening. There were a good amount of folks there just for the day.
      As far as cameras / lenses, we are by no means experts. We used our iPhones, GoPro, and a low/mid end Sony camera.

    Carter, I have a question. How late are the platforms and trails open. Say..if you are staying at the loge and want to just wander out in the evening..when less people are around. I'm shooting for 2023 to go if I can get the spot (timeframe) I want

    • @CarterChronicles
      @CarterChronicles  3 роки тому

      To answer your question, we don’t know. We were only there for a day trip, so our return flight left in the afternoon. You would need to contact Katmai National Park or Brooks Lodge to get that information concerning the trails and platforms. We sure hope you get to visit!

      Mike Firz has said that they close the platforms at 10pm for unhabituated bears

    Hoping to go next July. Is it better to fly from Anchorage or Homer? We plan to visit Homer while in Alaska.

    • @CarterChronicles
      @CarterChronicles  2 роки тому

      I’m not sure, but I would think you would have more options flying out of Anchorage just because it is a bigger airport. That being said, Homer may provide just the flight you need, and it may work out perfectly while you are there. You would just have to check available flights.

    My grandpa and I are trying to decide if it's worth the price... we already have very expensive excursions planned. Is it about $850?

    • @CarterChronicles
      @CarterChronicles  3 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately, most things in Alaska are on the expensive side. Our day trip to Katmai ran right around $900/pp. Only you can decide if it is worth it to you, but for us it was a bucket list item and definitely worth it!

    • @maggmail6
      @maggmail6 3 роки тому

      If you stay at the lodge it's 850 a night. The place rides to there from Anchorage are 900+
