In 1941, they did use troops in that kind of callous fashion, with NKVD machine guns set up behind advances to prevent retreat. After winter blunted the German advance, more rational heads prevailed. However, by that time several elite units had been squandered in a line infantry role, including Soviet paratroops and ski troops. In many engagements, NKVD would machine-gun retreating soldiers not to 'get rid of them' but to try and get the rest to return to the attack.
For those who did not know, since the summer of 1942, by order No. 227, in addition to the front line, there were also the NKVD "Zagradotryad" barrage detachments, which were always in the second line and their task was to shoot those who retreated. They were armed with machine guns, submachine guns, SVT, artillery and mortar weapons. They were used everywhere, and not only against penal battalions. When you plan a film adaptation of the Kharkov operation in 1942, you should take this into account. Few people know about this om, but during this operation there was a large shortage of ammunition, there was simply nothing to shoot with, the operation was extremely poorly prepared. There was not enough equipment for transportation, because most of the cars were lost at the beginning of the war. Field artillery was transported mainly on horse-drawn vehicles. Your source is a little confused. There were mutiple ways to get out of a penal units. Penal units could also serve as a "get out of gulag" card as the soviet goverment was trying to draw manpower from all corners of it´s territory and all demographics. And a citizen that was willing to die for stalin clearly didn´t belong in the gulag. Common soldiers who commited any infractions were organized into seperate units, penal coompanies and made up a far smaller percentage of the penal troops as the point of order 227 was to stop blaming the private for his captains or commissars failure. Penal units were also the only ones who had blocking detachments force them into an attack. All others haaad these heavily armed units in their defensive positions to ensure that any possible panic and rout would not lead to them falling back beyond their original position. They were heavily armed and soldiers that had to retreat could be confident that their own trenches wouldn´t be overrun by counterattacking germans. Order 227 was less about forcing your infantry to charge under threat of death but more about telling your officers that any time an order to defend or retreat was not followed, the NKVD would loo into it. And that any order the generals gave would also be looked into.

Some historians dispute that the soviet union used penal battalions, but their were some survivor reports, one famously fought for 3 armies until the allies captured him, which is how we first learned of the famous order 227. Despite this, people deny that the soviet union ever used penal battalions at all, because they supposedly used patriotism and told of ss attrocities to convince penal battalions to do their duty. In my personal opinion, both can be true as many in penal battalions were either apart of an opposition of Stalin's new order or suspected of being in opposition.
> Some historians dispute that the soviet union used penal battalions What do you mean dispute? Penal battalions were an actual thing implemented by Order 227. Mostly deserting/disobeying officers and NCOs were sent in there.
@@Someone-lr6gu yeah, but in america, there are schools that actually teach that this didn't happen. Even history channel once did a documentary on the "Myth" of penal battalions. This has been going on for the past 2 decades. I'm not going to publicly denounce these people while I am still taking college classes, I would just kiss my diploma goodbye. One even taught that japan wasn't zenophobic or had religious bigotry against christians because "They just didn't want to lose control of their country." you want me to go fail that class? I paid 1300 dollars for that class alone, i'm not gonna dispute those claims eff that.
I believe that the amount of penal battalion units were actually counted, something like around 500,000 units went through from 42-45 out of almost 35 million mobilized, so about 1.5% and out of those 1.5% about 160,000 were shot due to Stalins order 227. so when you hear somebody REEEEEEing about Muhhhhh Stalin firing squads shooting backs of their own soldiers, know that's GROSSLY overexaggerated, about 0.4% of ALL conscripted soviet soldiers were shot due to order 227 for retreating and spreading panic to nearby soldiers.
So will Gates of Hell when the full version releases have factions like the US, Britain, and Japan or is it just strictly the USSR and Germany since it's technically a DLC for Call to Arms? I am really hoping they have the other factions besides just those 2.
Short answer yes No mods It is better then mowas2 Long answer What diplex is currently showing us is the closed beta of call to arms ostfront gates of hell , you will need the basic call to arms version if you so wish to play the open beta of gated of hell currently one one mission is available :(
This game looks fantastic do you think you could really push the engine and see just how much action you can have without it dropping the framerate to much
You should add some SS soldiers into these battles also. I will say though they likely did just straight up kill the deserters or those retreating in the midst of a battle. Because at that point when it’s between winning or losing the deserter or person retreating is of no use, when Staling signed Order 227 into law it quite literally did say you were not to retreat unless given the order from high up.
> I will say though they likely did just straight up kill the deserters or those retreating in the midst of a battle They didn't. Deserters were caught and either sent back to the frontline or court martialed and sent to penal battalions. Executions were extremely rare.
Trenches were still widespread during WW2 during defenses. For example, uring WW2 on the Eastern front Soviet side had volunteers and convicts dig trenches during the Battle of Moscow.

I paid 1300 dollars for that class alone, i'm not gonna dispute those claims eff that.
Can I download this map or battle setup anywhere?
Still great video diplexheated
That was awesome, kinda want to do a bolt action soviet penal legion now 😅 Great stuff!
Stupid question but is this game a work in progress? And if not hows the mods situation and is it better then MOWAS 2?
Short answer yes
No mods
It is better then mowas2
Long answer
What diplex is currently showing us is the closed beta of call to arms ostfront gates of hell , you will need the basic call to arms version if you so wish to play the open beta of gated of hell currently one one mission is available :(
Have you ever thought about streaming?
Do the siege of jadotville it’s a movie on Netflix
Can someone tell me how to play editor please??? no one answering me please.
> I will say though they likely did just straight up kill the deserters or those retreating in the midst of a battle
They didn't. Deserters were caught and either sent back to the frontline or court martialed and sent to penal battalions. Executions were extremely rare.
Have soviets won one battle since diplex came back ?
Yes.
Im a bit confused here, is gates of hell part of call to arms dlc or is it a complete different game with call to arms engine?
I love seeing blue caps get blown to little bits.
Edit: to clarify, blue caps were the nickname of the NKVD.
Penile charge?! Ooh behave! ;)
I noticed in a lot of these WWII battles the use of trenches is common, I was under the impression that trenches were a thing of the past post WWI.
They are still being used to this day.
Trenches were still widespread during WW2 during defenses. For example, uring WW2 on the Eastern front Soviet side had volunteers and convicts dig trenches during the Battle of Moscow.
