I found this so moving. What an amazing woman Biche was to have survived alone,in all weathers, with so little for so long. But I found myself wishing that she had been able to pass away in the place she loved the most, close to nature, listening to the birds. I hope she had a peaceful death? I love that her most prized possession was a book.

My Grandmother lived outside of a small remote town in Alaska by herself for almost 20 years. I had seen her only a few times in my life. She was only 5' tall and fished and hunted by herself. She cut and split her own firewood as well. Climbing the mountain to hunt was admiral alone. She was 65 years old when she left Seattle Washington to go to Alaska shortly after my Grandfather passed. She took care of herself. Never accepted a handout from anyone. Of course she didn't live as harshly as this woman. She had a comfortable, but small little cabin. But, she really roughed it out . Her Family as well took her back to Seattle when she was near 85 yrs old . She was losing her vision and was not healthy. She was put into a nursing home and passed away 1 week later. Sometimes I wished they would have left her where she lived in solitude. I know that she would have rather passed in her home. I've always Loved and admired her. Strongest woman I've ever known ❣️❣️

For all we know, she may even have had struggles with social anxiety, contributing to her withdrawing from village life, choosing to live there all alone. The town is empty, alone and stark,
But wait, yes there is a spark,
      A slender,frail and lonely heart,
That wills to live, tho' all else is shorn apart.
The wind and rain come with snow and ice,
And in the summer, the sun is warm and nice,
High mountains keep their loyal company,
And lonely stars at night, twinkle their silent symphony,
No voices speak,no other human sound,
In all that space, can be heard or found.
      A solitary choice,a vow made long,long ago,
Her struggle each day to shuttle to and fro,
She lives her life frail and bleak
And bears her lot, alone with sorrows deep.

A happy and beautiful hard life surrounded by nature, Biche was free and had all of her to herself. Living alone in nature can be hard at times , but it is also very rewarding, filled with peaceful and happy moments. After my wife left me 12 years ago I built a small strawbale cabin in the mountains, the closest town is 2 hours away. I love to cut firewood and walk in the woods, I have a cat and he walks with me, I see bears and coyotes, read books and spend most time alone. I buy everything I need at thrift stores, and go to the grocery store once a month. I don’t like to drive, in the summer I grow a garden, I also have a DVD player and buy movies for 50 cents at the thrift stores. I don’t feel lonely and enjoy spending time just sitting in my porch or watching the stars at night. I’m 62 years old.

Stop vilifying validation, as it's a natural trait of human nature. It's an adaptative trait because most of us need each other in order to thrive, and that's how we have progressed through centuries. Sociability has its good and its bad. She lived by a lake that was frozen most of the year, and she also lived a solitary life. She had moved there with her husband, when they were young. After he died, she didn't have any desire to go anywhere else.
Living alone, in the beauty of nature, is a blessing for many people.
They aren't broken by solitude, it's just their life. 💜💜💜

My thoughts exactly, my Italian grandmother lived this way...and I used to think "how could she not want companionship". Interestingly enough, my wife understood me, she somehow knew how to read my eyes and my body language. After my wife passed away several years ago, I gave up the big house, the fancy cars, and clothes...and I now understand why my grandmother chose her solitary life. I think people like to hear themselves talk...empty thoughts, they communicate and say nothing, they care about things that mean nothing, and for the most part, lead meaningless lives...when they volunteer or do something "good" it helps them feel like their meaningless lives have a higher purpose. I have lived alone for 20 years now. I don't watch T.V., although, I do have one, rarely go online or comment (usually I just shake my head at how trivial people are) and I probably use my phone about three times a month. I don't want to be with anyone else and soon I plan to move to the rural mountains of the South (here in the U.S.)...I don't plan to live "off-grid" but, very far away from civilization and very close to nature. I don't want to hear the chatter of people, the sounds of the city, cars, sirens, etc., just silence, the wind, and the birds. When I asked my wife what she thought her purpose in life was, she replied "to be your wife". We had two children but, both boys passed away, one at 27 of Leukemia, and the other, a police officer, had his life cut short...two weeks before his 35th birthday, my wife passed away unexpectedly shortly after. Yeah, I'm totally alone now but, I've lived my life and this is the way I choose to live out the rest of my years. There's nothing to feel sorry for, we're all born and we all have our trials and tribulations, and either we become resilient...or we don't. I don't think as humans we ever get to fully understand the meaning of it all.
Beautiful indeed! Biche became strong and resilient. God Bless her, and may she forever rest in peace.

But she's as happy as pie, and without the phobias, neuroses or hang ups that so many people in today's world are suffering from. This neighbour is not materialistic, but lives a simple life close to nature, grows some of her own food, tends to her plants, flowers and fruit trees, and generally always keeps busy. Religion is a big part of her life. As her neighbour, I find she is truly inspiring, and a lesson that a life lived differently can be far better than how the media dictates you have to live it.

In fact, I can feel dreadfully alone in a room full of people and I'd say that you know exactly how that feels.........not very sweet. Becoming a widow 12 years ago, aged 50, left me on my own. I then sold up and moved from a wee village to an island in the Outer Hebrides (off Scotland's west coast). And not just any old island, a truly remote island where I can go for a couple of months+ without seeing or speaking to an other living soul. I've no tv or mobile telephone - through choice. Solitude for me brings me joy and I'm good with that and hate when my lifestyle appears to jar with others and they are so quick to assume that I'm a depressed, miserable, lonely person. I'm the happiest girl going! Well my darling, may all your dreams come true wherever you are in the world and may you only have to endure others on your terms. Stay strong and God bless your heart.

She may not have wanted to leave but may not have had any other options and it's not fair to expect someone else to sacrifice their life, and probably their own family as well, to move in with her and manage in those harsh conditions.
It's a no win situation. Your observation about people dying in a nursing home in a couple of years is not actually correct. Research shows elderly people survive longer in a nursing home than they do at home. At home one person ends up bearing the brunt of 24 hour 7 days a week care, and it's generally a woman that is sacrificed. In this day and age, by the time an elderly person can't care for themselves any longer, their children are elderly themselves and are not able to do the heavy lifting required. This puts both them and the person they are caring for at risk of serious injury. Once an older person is injured, the chances are, they'll never fully recover.

Beautiful story of a woman with much strength and Pride. She probably would've lived many more years had they not "ripped" her away from her home. That happens a lot to older people when you strip them of their dignity and their reason to live. They give up. Too bad she didn't have anyone to check up on her from time to time, made sure she had plenty of food at least a lantern to light her house at night. It was sad but she never complained. You do what you have to do in order to survive. I don't know her but I love her. At least she at peace now and has been reunited with her family in Heaven. Fly high sweet Biche

When my mother died, my sister took my elderly father for a "visit" to oregon. She took him to court, had him declared incompetent, &put him in an assisted living home. He was devastated, miserable. By the time my brother & i found him, the nazi judge had passed judgement on him. Daddy met a sweet lady 2 yrs older, &they fell in love. Evil sister was so angry & jealous that she moved daddy to a different home. The elderly girlfriend was upset & called her grandson, who found our dad, and moved her into the same home. The bible says to honor your father & mother that it will go well with you all the days of your life. I never spoke to that "sister" again.

I couldn't agree with you more, Tracey!
Many people only see the surface and judge by that.
Did any pause to consider how solitary life can be so deeply rich with spiritual communion?
Sages of old sought the mountains, forests & wilderness to rid themselves of all distractions of so-called civilized society, with all its meagre, superficial aspirations, constraints & pettiness.
To live freely...unbound by such encumbrances which can stifle the truest nature of a human being...favoring pursuit of deep communion with the natural world & all its unseen but responsive energies... is a deliberate choice very few are courageous enough to make, in this day and age.
Having this everyday *achingly beautiful* view, clear air, mountain herbs and living water, would inspire me to sing with a whole heart in the fullest expression of my spirit...
      prayerful gratitude
