Hey Damon, I am a Tunisian living abroad, I hope this clarifies more points about some things that you couldn't find answers for:
    - Tunisia is very known for sea food, in addition to that, Tuna and Eggs are an essential part of our street food culture (so yeah, I can imagine your frustration with having to eat couscous with only vegetables for 11 days hehehe), if you weren't vegan you will definitely find more food varieties, but it is okay we can take the blame for it, sorry that you couldn't find what you're looking for as a vegan.
    - People in Tunisia usually go out at night because it is too hot to hang out between 11-16, if you're not wearing a hat and having sun screen, you can get serious harm from sun, you couldn't find many ladies at noon in the streets because they already have dark features (Thing that I love about Tunisian women), they tend to protect themselves from sun to not get even darker, but during the night you will find ladies hanging out, Tunisia is also the best country in the muslim world in terms of gender equality between men and women and also with the highest freedom of speech rates (we're taking the best part of Europe while still preserving our culture and religion)
    - Answering your question about wearing sleeveless shirts, usually, the general impression to it is that people will look at you as someone wanting to flex his muscles in public (even if you're not a muscular guy) which is a sign of arrogance and narcissism, and Tunisian people - generally speaking - don't love seeing armpits, we have an armpitophobia if you would call it that hahaha especially during the summer because last thing they wanna see is a sweating armpit, but this way of thinking is a little bit old school and younger generations now don't really care what you're wearing.
    - Speaking about Adhan (spelled Azan in some other muslim countries), it is simply a call to prayer, think of it like church bells, but muslims love to use their throats instead lol, there are 5 prayers each day depending on sun position in the sky. But let me say that the Tunisian society is a very diverse society, you will find religious people who are really disciplined and attached to their religion, and you will find others who are not practicing of religion but would still introduce themselves as muslims, so don't expect that everyone around you will leave the place and go to the closest mosque when they hear the Adhan (eventhough, from Islam's prospective, that is what should be done). while still speaking about Adhan, for babies, parents will whisper adhan's words in the baby's right ear, think of it as baptizing in Christianity, and the right side generally speaking in islam is seen as more preferable than the left side, that's why we whisper in the baby's right ear, we eat with our right hands, we enter a mosque with our right foot, etc...
    - Lastly, about Kairouan City, you said "why is it all the way here?", well that's because the founder of that city "Okba Ibnu Nafaa" wanted to protect it form sea invasions, so he strategically chose its position literally in the heart of Tunisia. Kairouan is considered the 4th most important city in the Islamic world (1- Mekka 2- Medina 3- Jerusalem 4-Kairouan), and that's because it played a crucial role in spreading Islam in Africa, it was the city from which Islam was spread to Maghreb region before reaching other african nations like Tchad, Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal etc, it was the Islam hub in Africa, since the other 3 cities were all in the middle east.
    - Jasmin flower is considered the national flower of Tunisia, we adore jasmins, we make necklesses made of jasmine.
    - the first university in the whole world was in Tunisia, Al zaytoona university, dates back to 737 C.E.
I hope these infos help, please feel free to ask if you or people in the comments section here have more questions, I do understand that some cultural things will sound weird until you understand the philosophy behind it

We eat those quite often during the week. Also salads like "omek houria" which is a dip made of carrots and seasoned with spices or slata mechouia that you can get without tuna and eggs and u can find it pretty much anywhere. As a tunisian, I’m so sad that you haven’t actually visited the good places in Tunisia (like Galite islands, Thibar, Bni Mtir, Hawariya, Bizerte, Djerba island, etc).
Also, tunisian women tend to avoid going out during the day because it’s so sunny and they don’t wanna get tanned because most of them already have a fairly dark skin. And they do hang out with men. It’s not just men and men / women and women.
You can also try other tunisian traditional food than just couscous, like: Lablabi, Kamounia, Houria, etc

Yeah I know some like to think they are white for whatever reason hh but they are not . The rare natural blond hair & blue eyes that you’ve might seen in Bizerte are not the norm .

Such divisions appeared in rabbinical literature and in early modern scholarship, usually dividing humankind into four or five categories, with colour-based labels: red, yellow, black, white, and sometimes brown.”
2- as Tunisian you surely know , pale- skin Tunisian call themself “white” & they mean it hhh .. my comment was based on that comprehension/illusion. happy to see you are not one of those idiots :) .
3- you might have a lighter skin colour but you still (as African Tunisian Arab Berber) in the black/brown category.
4- again ,The typical Tunisian skin colour is brown with various shades from very light to dark . Next time when you see someone with darker skin then you, you can assume he is the original Tunisian .

omg I litterally discovered your channel a few months ago, now you're in my country! welcome Damon!
I just wanted to clarify few things after watching the full video:
1- why there are only men in cafés?
In cafés that are in small/traditional areas/neighborhoods, usually only men go there, it's not that it's "forbidden" for women to go in, it's just that it's culturally conventional for these places to be just for men (in some small areas you can find female waitresses in these men-only cafés, so it's not really a "strict rule" or anything, it's just common that only men go to these specific cafés. It's almost like a men club where they can cuss comfortably and talk about whatever without the imposed restriction of respect for females being around if you know what I mean) This doesn't mean Tunisian men don't cuss around women or don't talk comfortably with female friends about anything, it's just that everyone's different..
There are deffinetely "mixed" cafés for both men and women that look much more modern and refined in better-looking areas that you obviously didn't visit (and eating/drinking there costs much more compared to the local cafés)
2- why are most people not wearing tank tops like you?
that's a generalization invented by you, Damon haha
It's a common thing for people to notice something for few days and assume it's the truth for an entire culture.. It's most likely a coincidence, a lot of Tunisian men wear tank tops and shorts and even inappropriately very short ones at times lol However, workplaces do not allow that, so maybe the men you saw wearing t shirts and pants are simply heading for work or shcool or simply it's just what they chose to wear that day
    3- Wajdi the teacher:
I just wanted to point out that he's speaking as if he's speaking to a toddler lol It's most likely unconscious of him as he is teaching you a language from scratch so he's kinda subconsciously considering himself in front of a toddler which makes every interaction with him kinda slow and a little frustrating lol maybe that's just me tho lol
    4- Chicago Mafia:
It's Chicago's reputation in Tunisia haha It's very common here that chicago means violence and crimes.. Whenever there is a dangerous area here, Tunisians would be like "oh beware! that area is like chicago" I'm not sure where this reputation comes from, most likely from hollywood movies
    5-Feels like everyone's gay:
If you're referring to how overly-friendly some men can be, well a lot of men act like that with tourists here, it may feel like flirting to a foreigner who's attracted to men, but chances are they're just being friendly and trying to know more about you out of curiosity (maybe some are gay tho can't speak for everyone haha)
6- where do young people go?
There are so many alternatives that are way too different from what's shown in the video, we have some famous night clubs and some go there, some throw extravagant parties, some just stay home and scroll on tiktok, some walk their dogs, some go for a walk on their own or go with friends to cafés.... basically like anywhere else in the world and each city has a different vibe
7- why don't they go pray?
People (or specifically women) may dress religiously but aren't necessarily committed to praying at the exact time of the prayer, some would gather all missed prayers and when they go back home they pray all of them one by one.. (and so many people don't even pray at all, they're just muslim because their parents are muslim) Everyone's different

You missed so much more of tunisia, so many places, restaurants, bars and activities, and so many cities ( mahdia, klibia, djerba, hammamet) you only went to places that not many young adults go to, i hope one day you come back and actually see how much beautiful tunisia is. So many people from europe are coming to live here because of how beautiful it is. And women do go out just not in the middle of the noon in la medina, because people are either working, napping or waiting for the sun to go down a little.

  • @gannahossam2820
    @gannahossam2820 25 днів тому

This vlog was so entertaining and brilliantly made as always! I love how you always have questions and observations about where you’re visiting. Why people weren’t out in the morning or particularly women is probably due to the heat (and the men lol), and as for the prayers, women are still obligated to pray just as men are, it’s just like you said people often have different degrees of religiosity. For example, some might be more committed to performing their prayer on time in the masijid, some just do it in the place they are at, some only do it if it’s in a convenient time and place. However there is the problem sometimes that there isn’t a place for women to pray which we’re always complaining about. As an Egyptian, I love the vibes of this doc and now I def want to visit Tunisia! 🇹🇳
