  • 1977 #DodgeAspenT-top Special Edition Junkyard Find. Looks like we have ourselves a late 70s #malaisemopar in the yard. But this might just be a pretty #rareMopar because of them T-tops on it. After a little research, turns out they built very few of these with T-tops. Now i think this agin is one of those examples of when rare doesn't necessarily equate to highly valuable or sought after. Anyhow, I thought it was interesting to say the least. This one was bought new in the state of Washington nad found its way to Texas sometime in the mid 80s. Its been off the road for at least 2 decades and it really showed. Nonetheless, it was all there and not too far gone that it couldnt be put back on the road. Alas that is not to be and soo. it will be meeting the crusher. Hopefully some good parts are saved before its time is up.

I remember these cars as the 4 door sedan & the wagon which my grandparents had a Dodge Aspen wagon SE (Special Edition) as I remember the hood ornament. Liked the design of the wagon & the design of the dash & instrument cluster including the steering wheel Chrysler once had, those were the days. I remember the turn signal on both fenders too, facing the driver.

brings back memories - my grand dad bought me a brand new 76 Dodge Aspen SE 4 dr sedan this same color - from Holley Motor Co in Tyler - loved that car - had 8 miles on it when i drove off the lot - it was called Carmel Tan Metallic - this car does not have the light package with fender mounted turn signals - mine had rubber rub strips and guards on the bumpers strips mine had the 318 also - a 360 believe it or not was optional in 77 - it had the same tilt steering wheel which was still wrapped in a plastic cover when I got it - mine had velour interior instead of the vinyl and I had these same wheels - they were called 14 inch Chrome Styled Road Wheels in the sales brochure .. the center caps are original - always liked the hood ornament and chrome hood wind split this car also has the electric rear window defrost (switch is left of steering column) mine had the same woodgrain glove box door - interestingly this car is not factory AirTemp AC equipped the T Top option came out in 77

Whoa Nelley, SE and not really for me. Nah, the SE meant really nothing back then. It wasn't a true special edition like a collector's edition. It was Chrysler's marketing more than anything. T-tops were often available as an upfit and many aftermarket companies did them back then, but yes some were factory options for them. 1977 was the first year for that. There were about 266,000 Aspens produced in 1977. The one to get is the Aspen R/T in 1977 and later on they had the Aspen "kit car" which was made to look like the "43 Petty" race car popular at the time.
Yup, we got the VIN, we win: N for Dodge Aspen, P for Premium price class, 29 for two door special coupe, G for 318 V8 with two barrel, 7 for 1977 model year, B for Dodge Main/Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Dodge Main plant closed in 1980 and then the property eventually became part of GM's assembly plant that is there today. The plant was huge and was a "city within a city" of sorts. It had an area called "The Playpen" which employees were allowed to work on their own stuff and hang out after hours. I worked in a place very similar to Dodge Main in administration, and we had a "playpen". I learned and fixed a ton of things while I was there. I still talk to the person that runs that part of the company, even after being gone from there for 17 years. That's a Sears Auto Center sticker in the trunk and you've shown those before.
We got the tag, we can brag: E44 for 318 V8 with two barrel, U for USA spec vehicle, D32 for Torqueflite automatic transmission (likely a 727), G11 for tinted glass, all windows, C13 for front shoulder belts (hard to read), L1 for line one at Dodge Main/Hamtramck, R11 for Musicmaster AM radio, R31 for single rear speaker. Possible U3 Carmel Tan Metallic exterior paint.
That dealer location in Kent, WA is now an office/manufacturing complex of sorts. Tom Matson Chrysler was sold in 2016 and is now Bud Clary Chrysler of Auburn, WA at 2925 Auburn Way North in Auburn, WA. Yes, I have had one explode on me as well. My sister's 1990 T-Bird when it was about 2 years old. I was changing the oil and servicing it when I shut it off at my neighbor's shop. My neighbor told me to pull it up and my friend was going to open the hood and I told him no and when I went to start it, we heard a loud noise and the battery split in half. Thank goodness that he wasn't standing in front of it. At that same time, the driver's door latch broke and I had to replace it and all of the clips. That's what soured me with those cars from the start.
Yup, those bags were given away by many firms. You're supposed to put them on the outside mirror to flag the police and tow trucks that you are disabled. South Hill appears to be gone. Depending on which corner you look at, there's a 7-11 or a Rite Aid on a given corner. Great Neck tools are sold at Lowes. They were the "Pittsburgh" of their day. Mainly cheap tools for the not too serious DIY-er. Better DIY'ers went with Craftsman.
Yes, the lack of AC would make sense coming from WA state as it's cold there and pretty rainy, although a compressor would help with defrosting. Unfortunately, the Northwest has also spawned a lot of narcotics problems and a serial killer or two.....
Whoa Nelley, E44 and out the door. T-top and took a flop. A double tag and we can (somewhat) brag. 318 and not so great. No AC and that's not for me. Torqueflite missing a bite. Going to be flat and that's that. MOPAR isn't going very far. That's it, time to quit. Going to get squished and Pentastar faithful are a little bit pissed.

Thank you for breaking down those codes, nice to know who she really is, even tho shes going away, would love to know how to do that, my early 80s fifth avenue is not original and you would know that, and she would have been a heavy loaded package if she had actually been produced, she has parts from 82 thru 89,

I have never seen such a highly optioned Aspen. My guess is a collector would have liked to have had it, as restored it would be 1 of a kind. Strange that SE would have had a full vinyl roof. But it was cut for the t tops. My guess is Dodge would put any options on as long as it was bringing in money. Regarding the bag of sand in the trunk. My guess is it was to improve winter traction by adding weight to the rear since the V8 up front didn't put the weight on the driving wheels. Knew a lady in NY bought new a basic 1970 Duster but a 318 with factory air. She said NO traction in the winter with all that weight up front.

It's a '77. Cars in America started sucking in 1973-74. By 1977 they sucked pretty bad and they kept getting worse through the 80's. I can't see any reason why this junk would be desirable.

Yea this probably one of those examples of when rare doesn't necessarily mean desirable as well. I only mentioned rare because of the t tops.

@@ClassicRideSociety I can’t understand why Harbor Freight has such a rabid (and vicious) following. I get it that you get a lot of “tools” for the money. I have never been tempted by Harbor Freight because I always figure it won’t seem like a bargain if I am picking it out of my eye!
