I have a 20 year old golden yellow linen dress in a casual flared style, centre front and back seams, flat-fell seam finishes, self-bias binding neckline and armholes, 2 inch faced hem that has been washed and air dried at least 100 times. It still looks lovely and flattering. I always use laundry treatments for hard water so as to prevent that grungy look. If you have soft water, linen would last forever.
I love sewing with and wearing linen. I have made several garments in various weights. And a linen rayon blend. I love them all. I am enjoying your series, learning new things about linen.

I thank you so much, I have become totally besotted with linen. I scrounge all the thrift stores and bring home men’s shirts and TRY and make tops with them, I love this fabric. I admit to being a polyester snob…. Sorry, I just love how this fabric breathes! Had no idea that Canada produced this fabric! Thank you so much for all your information, I am 65 and am TRYING TO SEW, my biggest challenge is that my aging shape has made me modify my patterns so much, which I am not good at. I really enjoyed learning about the flax plant and how it is made into fabric. Now I understand why the fabric is so expensive. I’m making my first linen garment and followed the instructions on the bolt that said to wash in cool water, dry on low, and use a cool iron. Well, a cool iron has no effect at all on smoothing out the wrinkles, so I used a little steam, which helped a bit. I wish I had seen this video before pretreating, but now I feel more confident about ironing with steam and a pressing cloth. I washed only once and have cut out my pieces, so I hope it won’t shrink much more! Thank you for this excellent video!

This was a fascinating video! I love linen and linen blends! Love sewing with it and wearing it! Love the natural color and the way it takes die. I generally use linen blend with either cotton or rayon. The cost is less and I like the drape better-also a bit less wrinkled than pure linen! This video was so informative! Often people question the cost of linen -this video gives the reason why! Such a process involved in turning the plant into a useable textile! Thank you for always providing so many interesting, broad based, and informative videos. It’s always interesting to learn from another pro sewist and share ideas! I especially appreciate this information-as I own and operate a private sewing studio -whereby I teach the art of all things fiber and stitch! Everything you put out is high quality! I've been sewing a lot with linen this whole year just due to where I live. It's the Sonoran desert. We get less than 1 inch of rain and never freezes in the city. It's hot. And bright. And linen is perfect. I have about 8 yards left of some handkerchief 2.3 to 2.8 Oz linen for cover ups, tanks and blouses. Then some 5.3 Oz med linen in several darker colors for skirts, pants and other bottoms. It's so forgiving after being washed a couple times. Another reason to absolutely dry is all the lint that comes off the first few washes. I washed my 11 yds of handkerchief linen when I got it, serged edges, right sides together, a big tube, but I had to clean the lint trap 2 times each cycle. But it's so worth it. I read about softening linen quicker and tried the baking soda method. It didn't seem to accelerate it much, and I soaked the linen with frequent agitation as well for 72 hours. I'll stick with just washing. There's usually no short cut for awesomeness.. Lol I made a few skirts which did require some pressing but after, I'd say a dozen washes, they are now just wash and wear. Maybe a spot press on the hem to fall properly. I'm a fan of linen! I can't wait to see what else you show us. I've seen literally every video of yours and I'm excited to see a lot more linen easy to refer to. Thank you for everything you do for us Karina! The other crazy thing is I do not have a sewing machine and I have not sewn since I was in my early twenties, along time ago. Your son's shirts will be amazing and they will last a very long time. Main thing, wash several times, it makes all the difference. Sewing the collar will be a treat... super crisp. I'd use light weight fusible cotton interfacing for the collar and stand.
As another linen advocate, I was not bored by any means. I went from a love-hate-love relationship with linen. I feel frumpy most of the time so at a time I didn't want to look frumpier, I thought. I gave all my linen pieces to my daughter who loves linen to this day. I recently made a lined linen coat for her plus several tops and pants. I didn't leave myself out as I also have some basic and well-loved pieces. I look forward to more info on linen as I can always learn more. I sincerely appreciate your dedication to the art of sewing. I don't know if you have heard of Edith Head in Hollywood. She dressed the stars and has gone down in history as a star herself. I have a feeling you might have that notarity as EVERYONE seems to know your name and talents. Thank you for your dedication and a mentor to us all.

I love the info about the production of linen. I've seen a video on the historical production (pre and post industrial revolution) and I think learning about textile production is fascinating. It makes me appreciate the value of the cloth, and encourages me to be more mindful of the environmental cost of slow fashion in addition to the more well known waste of fast fashion.
I'm fascinated with textiles and have always had a lot of respect for the process and it's worth. Hence trying to use it all up, even the little scraps.

Thanks you so very much. I have a lot of linen Which I purchased, on sale, over the past year. I have made 1 top, which I love. But with these tips I feel confident I can make more pieces which will last. I will use patterns that I have made before, I believe you have said make a pattern a few times. This has been the best advice because I get better with each make; I don’t have to make a muslin each time and it is so cost effective. I sewed my husband a camp shirt out of linen. After taking it out of the dryer I had to press it. Then after he had it on for awhile it looked like he slept in it!
By far linen is one of my favourite fabrics. I've used linen silk for suiting, I have used mixed with cotton. It's fab on its own. I love the wrinkles. It looks more expensive than it is even though here in UK it is expensive. I've made a gilet and Harrington jacket with irish linen by far the best in my opinion. It is more expensive ❤️

I love sewing with linen, in fact, I have a piece of red 100% linen that I am using for the Peppermint Magazine Button-Up Dress, so this series is very timely for me. I have a stunning linen & silk (90:10) mix with a printed impressionist painting look on it and I’ve been struggling with finding the perfect pattern for it as I want to show off the print. I’m leaning toward a trapeze dress with a belt, probably a self fabric belt. It’s gorgeous fabric and I’d love to make it up, but I have some fear of cutting into it as it was quite expensive.

This was great information. I really liked seeing the process of making the linen. I made a linen top one time & did some embroidery on it. I prewashed the fabric once before making, but it shrunk the next time it was washed. So I will definitely wash a couple of times next time I use linen. I’m beginning to understand your advice to pre-wash linen 2-3 times before sewing, based on experience from some bought linen shirts for my partner. The first time washed was a nightmare to iron. After the second wash, it settled so much for a good easy iron, and even better after the third wash - they’ve become my favourite shirts for my partner to wear, they’re so beautiful, and look expensive. I’ll throw my linens in my stash back in the wash a couple more times, as they’ve only had one initial wash after buying, before adding to my fabric shelves - they’re still quite stiff.
I’ve been on a washing craze the last couple of days. I love having them ready to go for when I need them 😀. Mens linen shirts are amazing. I love them too.

Thanks so much for this series, I am finding it so helpful and interesting! I have seen several sewing experts say that if you iron your linen before you pre-wash it, it becomes less prone to wrinkling, some even describing it as becoming "wrinkle free" or "wrinkle resistant". I tried this a few times with linen from different sellers and it doesn't work for me. Yet when I ask about this, they are quite adamant! I wonder if it's some kind of special linen that has a pre-treatment or something? Have you heard of this? In any case, looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

Perfect timing….I just did a huge linen fabric haul. Different weights and not just solids. June will be linen and woven fabric month for me.
Can you imagine placing the ‘threads’ on the looms and then having to watch it as it weaves the cloth?

I love the info about the production of linen. I've seen a video on the historical production (pre and post industrial revolution) and I think learning about textile production is fascinating. It makes me appreciate the value of the cloth, and encourages me to be more mindful of the environmental cost of slow fashion in addition to the more well known waste of fast fashion.
I'm fascinated with textiles and have always had a lot of respect for the process and it's worth. Hence trying to use it all up, even the little scraps.

Thanks you so very much. I have a lot of linen Which I purchased, on sale, over the past year. I have made 1 top, which I love. But with these tips I feel confident I can make more pieces which will last. I will use patterns that I have made before, I believe you have said make a pattern a few times. This has been the best advice because I get better with each make; I don’t have to make a muslin each time and it is so cost effective. Thanks again and am looking forward to upcoming videos on linen.

I sewed my husband a camp shirt out of linen. After taking it out of the dryer I had to press it. Then after he had it on for awhile it looked like he slept in it!

By far linen is one of my favourite fabrics. I've used linen silk for suiting, I have used mixed with cotton. It's fab on its own. I love the wrinkles. It looks more expensive than it is even though here in UK it is expensive. I've made a gilet and Harrington jacket with irish linen by far the best in my opinion. It is more expensive ❤️

That’s fine. I know creases are not for everyone but they are not so bad after washing it several times.
This is going to be a great series! I love sewing with linen, in fact, I have a piece of red 100% linen that I am using for the Peppermint Magazine Button-Up Dress, so this series is very timely for me. The section on how linen is made was very interesting; I had no idea it was such a lengthy process! I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.

I have a stunning linen & silk (90:10) mix with a printed impressionist painting look on it and I’ve been struggling with finding the perfect pattern for it as I want to show off the print. I’m leaning toward a trapeze dress with a belt, probably a self fabric belt. It’s gorgeous fabric and I’d love to make it up, but I have some fear of cutting into it as it was quite expensive.
I hear you on the fear! I have a silk piece my dad bought me in 2010 and I have still to sew it up!

Thank you for this very informative video. I have just recently started to venture into sewing with linen ( mostly due to cost, special care and wrinkle factors) so was encouraged to continue with this new experience.
This was great information. I really liked seeing the process of making the linen. I made a linen top one time & did some embroidery on it. I prewashed the fabric once before making, but it shrunk the next time it was washed. So I will definitely wash a couple of times next time I use linen. Thank you Karina for sharing your knowledge, techniques and time.

I’m beginning to understand your advice to pre-wash linen 2-3 times before sewing, based on experience from some bought linen shirts for my partner. The first time washed was a nightmare to iron. After the second wash, it settled so much for a good easy iron, and even better after the third wash - they’ve become my favourite shirts for my partner to wear, they’re so beautiful, and look expensive. I’ll throw my linens in my stash back in the wash a couple more times, as they’ve only had one initial wash after buying, before adding to my fabric shelves - they’re still quite stiff.
I’ve been on a washing craze the last couple of days. I love having them ready to go for when I need them 😀. Mens linen shirts are amazing. I love them too.

Thanks so much for this series, I am finding it so helpful and interesting! I have seen several sewing experts say that if you iron your linen before you pre-wash it, it becomes less prone to wrinkling, some even describing it as becoming "wrinkle free" or "wrinkle resistant". I tried this a few times with linen from different sellers and it doesn't work for me. Yet when I ask about this, they are quite adamant! I wonder if it's some kind of special linen that has a pre-treatment or something? Have you heard of this? In any case, looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

I would have though that a little bit of polyester would solve the wrinkle problem in linen.
Yes but it feels scratchy on the skin. I have purchased this blend before and don’t like the way it feels.
