    But, they already had done "As Tears Go By". That was already very unusual, for them. And their cover of "You Better Move On", which is straight up pop. The Rolling Stones had more unusual songs on their "Between The Buttons" album, where they did some almost English music hall type music. Which continued on their next "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album. Especially the more psychedelic leaning sound of the album. And more music hall influenced material, like "On With The Show". After this era, The Rolling Stones went back to the sound more associated with them. Plus, some new country music influences.

    They used a similar Baroque style on Ruby Tuesday and Backstreets Girl.

    Very cool, TJR! We think of the Stones as the “ Greatest Rock and Roll band in the World, but they have always had the confidence to work in many genres.
    Recal that the first Jagger- Richard composition was “As Tears Go By” , a complete contrast from their street- tough image of their early days
    Equally compelling on “ Aftermath” is the softly inviting “ I Am Waiting”. Keith once described it as “ Richard Farina stuff”.

    Thanx TJ. One could also add to the "baroque" subgenre songs like: "Play with fire", "Ruby Tuesday", "She's a rainbow"... And years later: "New faces" ( on Voodoo Lounge)) or Mick Jagger's solo "Angel in my heart". Not baroque but very different to how the Stones are generally perceived: "Heaven" (on Tattoo You).

    I am surprised no one mentioned the kaleidoscopic “In Another Land,” replete with Bill Wyman’s lead vocal reverb, Brian’s Mellotron, Nicky’s harpsichord, and other strange sound effects. It's like a nightmarish carnival with very surreal imagery. The fact Bill sings lead makes it an oddity!

      No wonder it was written Bill Wyman, "In Another Land" is the only Rolling Stones song to feature Wyman on lead vocals, and one of only three Rolling Stones songs he wrote (the others being "Downtown Suzie" and the unreleased "Goodbye Girl").

    You are dead-on about the song's melancholy atmosphere and its haunting, evocative mood. It's so achingly beautiful I feel a range emotions well up inside me a lot of times while listening to this masterpiece. Neil Young was captivated by its moody melody as heard in his "Borrowed Song" from his "Tonight's The Night" album (even singing "I'm singin' this borrowed tune
    I took from the Rolling Stones"). Thanks for your insightful breakdown of this unique and mesmerizing song; a job very well done.

    'Don't Play With Me' had a little bit of the same vibe; ' Live With Me' and '19th Nervous Breakdown' harpooned the same elite set, but they were solid rockers.. 'Paint It Black' had a distinct Arabesque feel to it. 'Miss You' was almost disco-ish ---don't get me wrong, I DIG it, and think it has some of the best chord work Keith's done.
    If you only have 3 Stones albums I think they should be Get Your Ya-Yas Out!, Sticky Fingers, and Some Girls.

    What the song Lady Jane proves is how great as songwriters Jagger and Richards were and how much Brian Jones contributed to coloring the sound…it’s brilliant. They are decidedly not a “blues cover band” at this point!

    • @billowens8051
      @billowens8051 4 місяці тому

      Yes, absolutely! And speaking of "blues cover band", I assume you're referring to Paul McCartney's quote from a year or so ago. I was disappointed by that quote, and a little pissed-off, because it's not true or accurate. But I just heard an interview with Keith in which he said that Paul called him up shortly after it was noted by the press. He told Keith it was taken out of context; that his actual quote was referring to what he felt the first time he heard them, which is true, but that they quickly evolved into much more than that. I was impressed that Paul felt the need to call Keith, who is a long-time friend, and set the record straight.

      Both songs have a music hall/ragtime feel and are from an album (Between the Buttons, 1966, US Edition) that Frank Zappa considered among his top 10 favorites and superior to the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper.

    Great video. There are many, many songs The Rolling Stones have done that sound very un-Rolling Stones like once you fit them into a box as the dirty, gritty, bluesier than The Beatles band. I would say "Between the Buttons" has much more Baroque and Psychedelia sprinkled into it than "Aftermath" had. That's why I like that album more. Half of the album "Aftermath" to me is just following their blues early sound while attempting to make it their own by creating original material but still very Muddy Waters/Robert Johnson-influenced for the most part. It's the more baroque part of the album I like the most which is not divided like that exactly but about 7 tracks from the whole album would just as well fit on "Between the Buttons" including "Lady Jane" which was them totally going in a different direction from Blues not just trying to copy The Beatles as most people suggest though they were influenced more than The Beatles were by them, but I think it was because Mick in particular liked to experiment with different music styles, especially the English hall and Baroque kind to show his softer side even though he didn't have the talent to play instruments like Brian did which boy, could he show off. Keith and Brian however were the more sticklers to the Blues than Jagger was, while Charlie and Bill kept that rhythm section tight as possible yet it was the melodic instruments both on guitar in the case of Keith and whatever exotic instrument Brian would play coupled with the exterior session musician which gave the sound while Mick sang. "Flowers" I would say is my favourite album from all their 60s period (which I even prefer to "Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed") which despite not being an official album nor even a US official album or even counterpart to a different UK album, it was actually a compilation album. That album however contained all the missed songs on the US versions of "Aftermath" and "Between the Buttons" plus adding the already established singles "Let's Spend the Night Together/Ruby Tuesday", "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow?" and even repeated "Lady Jane" from "Aftermath" because the album itself was basically a Baroque pop-themed album made specifically for the US. This also contained two exclusive original songs not available anywhere else which in my opinion were incredible gems actually recorded during "Aftermath" yet for some reason got discarded for another artist to record named Chris Farlowe in England, much like what The Beatles did giving early songs they didn't like to other artists. "Ride On, Baby" and "Sitting on a Fence", absolutely amazing songs which feature the best of Brian Jones' musical talent, one for being a song where he most plays a different set of instruments except for "Gomper" on "Their Satanic Majesties Request" or "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)" where he arguably plays more but while those songs are chaotic in nature, "Ride On, Baby" is a bop. "Sitting on a Fence" is a very acoustic track featuring Brian playing an acoustic guitar shared with Keith along with a harpsichord as well towards the end. There's even a bit of psychedelia sprinkled in there with "Please Go Home" not on the American "Between the Buttons" album and "Back Street Girl", awesome acoustic song I love even better than "As Tears Go By", it's just so folksy and has a very English European vibe as well as the only Stones song to feature an accordion that I've heard. "Take It or Leave It" has that Japanese koto and the original version of "Out of Time" though I do prefer the strings version has a marimba like "Under My Thumb", fuzz bass by Bill Wyman but the use of piano and organ are what most highlight the track instrumentally. "Mother's Little Helper" might be the only song on "Flowers" that wasn't on the US version of "Aftermath" which is more straight-up rock by the Stones, however the Indian aspect on the twangy lead guitars played by both Keith and Brian (similar to that of The Beatles' "Taxman") is a hint of psychedelia and even the melody and lyrics sound very nursery rhyme-ish. "Let's Spend the Night Together" has that more church-like organ at the end played by Brian Jones which breaks up with the rocking aspect of the song, not the Hammond bluesy type. It gives it a weird Ecclesiastic feel of satisfaction like as if it's a tease or rather guarantee for marriage regarding the suggestive lyrics of the song. That is all I have to say regarding the Baroque/Psychedelic Period of the Stones before their outright Psychedelic chaos on "Their Satanic Majesties Request".

    I've always thought that he was playing the part of a man who, in the end, had to marry someone of his own class. "Her station." That said, the Stones may've been more than a little typecast regarding their styles. Apart from those you mentioned, they also dabbled with jazz, country, even disco!
    Another lovely "folkish" song is "Sitting On The Fence!"

    It's not a bad song, but also not great and I've always felt that around this time the Stones were trying to compete with The Beatles and Brian Wilson, they were much better when they concentrated on what they did best. At the start of this video I thought the song was going to be As Time Goes By, which genre would put that in?

  • @soulsurvivor4499
    @soulsurvivor4499 4 місяці тому

    I don't believe it shows them reaching into different areas... I see the song as droaning... but in a way of consistency of a downtempo and simplified structure that can be used to fill out and do the r&d on any song... I like the song and I do agree with you that it takes you to a different mood.
    nice job
