Oh Jonny (Oh Jonny Oh) I started messing with piano aged 5..I'm now 79...yes I've been playing jazz ( dixieland) and pop stuff and never really got out of those styles even though I've attempted, never had any lessons, folks hear me at gigs and say " you're great" but I know that's rubbish because I fake everything ... suddenly you've opened my eyes to what it's all about with chords I've heard played, but never managed to work out...I think I'm past my sell-by date to start learning music but I'll be going through your tips and start practicing.. I might even get there! Thanks very much.
I'm a 55 years old piano begginer & just decided 5 months ago to take on jazz piano by myself using UA-cam as my teacher..I'm glad that to know I'm not an isolated case faking it...I hope to at least be able to fake it as good as you do...thanks
This is one of the best ever lessons for absolute beginners who are intimidated by jazz. Everything you taught was extremely simple yet also sounds very musical and is extremely applicable right away. Thank you so much for this
I've been learning classical til ABRSM 5 and man it's real hard to transition to pop/jazz and others, but this tutorial is so much help. So glad I found this vid
@@newagain9964 I think it’s just so hard cuz it’s an entirely different realm of music from classical. I grew up classical so the transition is also something I am struggling with. I’ve simply taken on the mindset of a beginner and ignored anything I learned in the past to try and make room for new learning which has made it a lot more easier to learn.
@@collinm.4652 Right. Which is why I don’t want to spend to much time formally learning classical piano….it’s only to learn to good technique, sight reading, etc. Not to become a concert pianist.
I’ve been seeing your youtube ads everywhere and I never cared for them because I’m currently delving into classical music. I listen to both jazz and classical music and both have their aspects that make me SO fond of them, but I’ve only analyzed into the innerworkings of classical music because I’ve grown up around the importance of sight reading. Most people say that you can only learn one genre at a time, however today I felt eager to learn jazz and came upon this video. This video made my day, I am so mesmerized and I’m only 4 minutes in! Thank you for this video Johnny :)
I have learned many music theories, like triad, seventh chord, major, minor scales, inversion,....etc. But I didn't know exactly how to use them. This guy just sort the things up and make it simple for beginner. Great job, so helpful.
Oh my goodness, I've been wanting to learn Jazz Piano for YEARS and never knew where to start as I don't know music theory (want to learn that too). This video has completely revived my desire. I cant thank you enough. I will definitely be taking a look at your website Johnny! :)
Indeed, I have several jazz books (I bought with enthousiasm :) but once at home, I did not really know where to start! Or did not always understand what was meant.
Having had some music lessons in my youth makes this considerably easier. I have always loved jazz and recently thought it would be cool to learn how to play some.
I just started to learn jazz piano during this lockdown and finally realised my understanding of scales have put on good use after so many years of just blindly memorising them! Thanks Jonny!
THANK YOU! I play by ear, and I love singing jazz, but I didn't know if I'd really be able to play it very well for a long time! This made SO much sense!
Cannot agree this is a video for complete beginners, except for the C scale. It’s worth my time though. Will probably need to repeat, pause, repeat, pause many times. Interesting presentation!
For decades I’ve been listening in awe to Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, George Shearing et al and could never imagine understating how they achieved that sound. I’ve even, without realising, been playing a 2-5-1 in 7ths and 6ths without understanding the significance of it but just loving the sound and combination of chord shapes but not the reason and in 18 minutes you, Sir, have explained everything from soup to nuts. Incredible!!! .. I will be signing up today! This has been an epiphany. Thanks Jonny 😀
You're the best piano teacher i've seen so far. You're very skilled, so you know what you are talking about, but at the same time your demeanor is just so approachable and you teach in a way that says like, "See? It's that simple after all". It's hard to explain it but that's how I feel. Thank you for all your great lessons!!!
Thank you for these lessons. Piano and Jazz can look so daunting as a complete novice but you explain it clearly whilst allowing the lesson to flow efficiently. I think the most important thing however, is it feels like you're having fun and that makes what would normally be mundane feel enjoyable. Appreciate it man

Really enjoyed this Jonny. My mother was a classical piano teacher and I treasure the gift of playing piano she gave me in lessons as a youngster growing up in New Zealand. I won medals and at high school I won the piano solo prize with a Mozart sonata on the new Steinway grand. BUT I hit a road block in theory - hated it - and eventually stopped. Now in my senior years I want to play by ear beyond C major., I love jazz piano - the standards are what I want to play, but I guess it's the theory block that stops me. 2-5-1 beyond C, I just can't take it in. Can you believe it? I just want to get out of the C zone. Found your great video today and love your style of instruction.
This is amazingly great, you have a gif for teaching, I nearly know how to read music sheet yet this class wasn't intimidating but fun cause I got a lot of progress by the end of the video
