Imagine this has been a Hit since about 1956 and although we have seen changes in the Kaiso music through these years Blakie's Gems continue to Glitter and remain Enjoyable . That is the Hallmark of a #1 Artiste; his music lives on.
Hello sir, I am trying to understand the whole song. I have gleaned this part from Bede Lopez " It was ah Bacchanal, 1950 Carnival, Fight fur so, with Invaders and Tokyo, Meh Friend run and left, his hat, When they hit him ah Baseball Bat, Never me again, to Jump in ah Steelband in Port of Spain" Now I have this from you "Quit on top d lady be, dey pelt ah bottle and bust meh head," Please could you write the rest of the lyrics? Appreciate
I could sing all his tunes when I was a lil boy growing up in Trinidad,I always got into arguements with friends who thought Sparrow was better.Because I, as an Indian boy could sing so good people used to ask meh to sing who knew me.I feel i could have been the first Indian Calypsonian in TT if my parents were not so prudish, they also stop me from beating pan.Ah still love de man.
I'm so sorry. I met and lived near Lord Blakie in Mt. Hope when I spent some time in Trinidad. Back then, he was singing "Yankee Woman." It was the best. He was the best.
Blakie is a legend in his own right - down to earth and natural. Could someone upload two of Blakie's songs - San Fernando & Ramma de Jamma! Have beeen looking for them about two years now.
@MrMichaelxavier I highly doubt he 'sanitised' his tune. Often at live shows verses get cut for time, are hummed or talked over, or are quite simply forgotten / mixed up (Terror was somewhat notorious for that). Blakie was not a man to worry much about offense. Furthermore, the verse in question was not offensive. It was merely an observation that an Indian man that was selling bread, was concerned for his life as the clash took place.
Yes, he's singing about the clash between Tokyo and Invaders steelbands in 1950. It really happened, and according to Blakie, he was there, although I don't think he was one of the pan men.
She dfinitely cyah stop meh now coz she no more with us but I really did like Blakie and I would sing his tunes then and I still sing them now,in my next life ah coming back right their in TT to win a calypso crown.BTW i had a friend in TT and his surname was Carasco.
It is possible but I think he used to play mas with tokyo although he used to live on ST. Paul street. He probably moved there long after because I moved to Morvant in early seventies he probably moved in the late seventies at that time he and Maria were on a break up I still used to visit St.Paul street regular basis I had friends that was still living there.
Carlton Joseph was born in St paul Street I knew his Mother Esmee float she used to make the best float in them times float and ackra sell right on corner of St. Paul and Piccadilly St.

"Steelband Clash" was sung in 1954. The composition referred to two events: 1. The Invaders/Tokyo steelband clash of 1950. 2. An incident that took place in Invaders in 1953. It is said that a man tried to drive through the band Carnival Monday morning, and was struck in the head with a baseball bat. Hence the line "mih good partner lost his hat, when dey hit him a baseball bat".
