I think this may be the greatest plot I have ever heard for a video game. Just the absolute most batshit insane story committed to an adventure game. 10/10.
As the HG101 article for this game put it: It seems like (Pax Softnica) took a look at Nintendo of America’s censorship rules and set out to create a game that broke each and every one of them. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that was true XD
The goat fever dream nintendo game drops just after the best 6 six hour christmas gift we could’ve asked for. Truly one of the best 24 hours in channel history
This game always seem fascinating by how absurd it is. The presentation makes it harder to take the events in the story a lot less seriously than what actually happens. Every sprite looks small and cute, it's presentation is absurd in comparison to other adventure games, which usually tend to have a more realistic style.
One small trivia not mentioned in assuredly the most awaited video of the Year of FDS: this game has a wonderful soundtrack by Hirasawa Hajime, of Star Fox fame, who would be one of the first game company composers to go freelance due to his disagreement with how copyright and royalties were handled in the Japanese games industry.
To be honest I had no idea that this game would not only be crazier than the HG101 article had let me to believe (aside from it somehow trying to 1-up the I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream point&click 4 years before it even got made and also managing to borrow a plot point from the PS2-era God of War trilogy at the same time over 2 decades prior to their creation), but also learning of how Ninty is so ashamed of it that they basicly gave it the Super Hornio Bros. treatment after releasing it just seals the deal.
I have been waiting for this one since the start of the project! I am shocked this one hasn't been talked about nearly as much outside of Japan considering the subject matter in the story of this adventure game. It contains things you don't usually expect from something published by Nintendo. I do think Nintendo is eventually gonna find a way to re-release it given that they mentioned its existence on the Famicom 40th anniversary website with its own page. Until then, I'll get a kick out of knowing this game exists and hopefully someone gets to work on an English translation.
@@EriChanTheRetroGamerNerd Nakayama Miho No Tokimeki High School is not present whatsoever and considering recent events its guaranteed to be sealed up in the Nintendo vault forever.
While not a top priority, I can see it eventually getting re-released in Japan. They just gotta slap a foreword on it about its subject matter like certain films and cartoons with questionable content by modern standards were re-issued.
Having learned about this game's infamy from the comments of the last video and having looked it up, I honestly expected worse. If anything, it's the "stuck-in-the-timeloop" ending that'd really vex me.
I won't lie here. Portions of this game sound like the times you would describe DBZ using the premise of an entirely different shounen franchise. But I believe you. Maybe. And yeah, Nintendo isn't re-releasing this ever. If Disney has the metaphorical Disney Vault for which nothing inside will return, Nintendo has this somewhere sealed that's significantly more secure than that.
They didn't even advertise this one on TV as far as I recall. It must've been someone's pet project; they just made like, 10 copies of the game and doomed it to obscurity right from the start. Still, it's funny to think that someone really wanted to have the Austrian painter and KKK worship the devil in their game, but also have baby Jesus get possessed by the devil in the same game. Thanks for that, Nintendo. xD
I was quite excited for this episode, and I knew I'd have to wait until the end of the year to see it. I think this game is just fascinating. I wish so badly that this game could be played in an easy accessible format for everyone besides just emulation. It's such an odd piece of Nintendo history.
Went from “I mean this involves the Devil, but they can rerelease this” to “I have to stop Hitler because I was put into the body of a POW Soldier”. If the game was in English, I’d play it for sure.
Imagine is Nintendo released this game in 2024! Peoples' head would be exploding left and right! This game is fifty shades of fucked up... I just wish this game had an English translation patch, though.
Having played this game... yeah, this dropping today is quite "fortunate". This game honestly feels like like a fever dream while playing, even though it's mostly "just" weird, hahah. In how many Nintendo games does the text say "Bishop is the devil!'s underling!" or "the portrait of the devil" actually shows Jesus possessed by the devil? xD That alone should tell you why Nintendo will never ever make a remake of this game. Shame though, maybe it would gain notoriety and be mentioned in one breath together with Manhunt and other games like it. :v
@RndStranger I just googled "Devil Muesum" and the nearest metro area for giggles and two of the plantations that offer tours came up. I can't decide if Google is being appropriate or creepy.

and I thought there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell we would ever get devil world on NES! this... yeah there would be no way. talk about breaking the yikes-o-meter! if there's anything I could defend, I have always wondered what a Quantum Leap videogame might have been like, so I guess this is as close as i'll probably ever get.
Of course they still took creative liberties with history in the '90s. People in the '90s still wanted to believe Columbus as the guy who proved the world was round, evolution as something that wasn't real, and pastors as guys who were just nice to children.
This seems like a very interesting story and game concept. They definitely could have made a better attempt with some of the elements, not made them so tone deaf.

💯👍🏿
'you leap to 1944 Germany' oh BOY
'next you wind up as a slave in 1864 america' OH BOY
This game is the magnum opus of the FDS.
Lincoln's insatiable hunger for animals

Nice! We just needed some scant nudity!
5:57 8-Bit Quantum Leap already makes this a 10/10 episode
True. In this case, you become a fugitive for life, like Unico.
Thank you for explaining the joke because somehow I'd forgotten the theme song and I just thought that part of the video was meant to be a montage.
Does the baby Jesus section make it a Christmas game?
100% absolutely. You literally cannot get any more Christmas than being there when Jesus is born.
>developed and published by Nintendo
So what you're saying is we could have had Super Devil Hitler Christ in Smash Bros
Jesus for Smash
*ZERO SUIT SAMUS!!!* versus. *BABY JESUS SATAN!!!*
I'm going to main Jesus and save everyone to death for my points.

How in the hell doesn't this have an English patch? It sounds amazing.
Let's make one.
Ifkr? Youd think the infamy would make it an obvious pick.

This might be the most amazing game plot ever created, it has everything. Literally everything. 😆

This has to be the most un-Nintendo game that Nintendo has ever made, even by the standards of early Japanese games!
The Quantum Leap bit 😅👍
America did it better, certainly.

Funny that you say that because I looked it up and the director is Keiji Terui, a writer for the early Dragon Ball anime.

This game is pretty cool.
I NEED A TRANSLATION PATCH OH MY GOD
I am very surprised I've never heard of this one.
I was waiting for this episod!!!!! Gosh that ending was unexpected
8:01 and then Abraham Lincoln must fight zombie
4:33 And the words are, "Paa Paa Paa Oom Papa Mow Mow"
"Funniest sound I ever heard, and I can't understand a single word! Is he serious or is he sane, "Ooh Mow Mow" is all he says!"
Sadly, I don't believe this game has an English fan translation :(
Osamu Tezuka wrote crap like this. Check out "Apollo's Song".
Yay quantum leap.
Went from “I mean this involves the Devil, but they can rerelease this” to “I have to stop Hitler because I was put into the body of a POW Soldier”. If the game was in English, I’d play it for sure.
Ditto.
Wow, your quote at the end of the video should be in the game's box.
Shame there's only one other 8-bit game where you fight Jesus.
Quantum leap music ftw! Hey I got that reference 😂
6:40 please tell me the pow is named Hogan
hell Nintendo stopped putting it out a year before the rest of the games
Is it just me, or does the device on the cover look like a Kamen Rider belt? (Most especially the Decadriver)
07:57 Well that wouldn't be very theatrical, now would it?
I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE 8-BIT THEME AT 5:56 ❤

4:43 I mean in all fairness if a guy is gonna pick me up I'd want him to be the type of guy who liked museums so. Shrug.
My thinking was the Devil Museum is more of a date thing, rather than a place to pick someone up.

YEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH Now THAT is a GOOD game
Wow, so this is almost Nintendo's equivalent of Disney's "The Black Cauldron".
Perhaps, at least Black Cauldron had an ending that worked.
The next game is a certain Puzzle Game with Blobs that have Eyes that pop when you match 4...
Dr. Robotman's Ghost Avalanche
