  • DIY SCOPE REPAIR is a 3 part video in which I demonstrate the disassembly, repair and adjustment of a variable magnification rifle scope. The video covers the entire scope including how to disassemble the erector as well as pointing out problems that may affect accuracy. I also describe how to make the specialized tools needed from materials that you may already have in the shop or garage. While it’s impossible to cover every scope design this video will give you a general knowledge of the inner workings of a scope and how it is assembled. Like me you may have to learn some things through trial and error. Part I covers disassembly. Thanks for watching!

    I installed this optic on a crossman 760 air rifle.I have now shot the riffle around 500 times during target/plinking practice, and the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope has done well.With this optic, I have neutralized around 30 pigeons that were invading one of my buildings.For my short range air rifle, I will continue to use this scope, but will be upgrading to a more powerful scope, when I buy a more powerful air rifle, in order to shoot at longer distance.For the money I have spent, this scope has truly been a great buy.

    Thanks for the great videos, Kenneth. Yesterday my BSA 3-12×50 took a turn for the worse. It is only crystal clear when I'm on 6 power, but nothing else. Every other power is blurry when I adjust the magnification ring. Do you have any idea how I can remedy this? Thanks again

      Thanks for watching! I've never experienced the failure you describe but I will venture a guess. Possibly one of the screws with the bushings that moves the lens in the erector has fallen out. Sounds like only one lens is moving causing the out of focus issue. If you shake the scope you may hear it rattle. Again just an educated guess from a diy guy.

      @badgthom Рік тому

      @Kenneth Dellinger Thank you very much for your reply. I haven't shaken it yet to see if I hear a rattle, but I will give that a try. I think you nailed it with it being just one lens moving. It was very wet and freezing when I tried adjusting it. There wasn't any obvious give at any point leading me to think that I sheared anything, but it seemed much stiffer than usual when trying to adjust the power ring. I think I'll give it until after my hunt and just use my 6 power for the time being so I don't have to resight in my rifle. I have a great place to start looking now after I harvest my deer. Thanks again for your expertise even if you say it's just an educated guess from what I'd consider a VERY knowledgeable DIY guy.

    I have a cheap tasco I had got for a air rifle and the thing... seemingly for no reason, has become real blurry. I noticed that if i tapped the scope against something solid it would sometimes resolve it but as soon as I take another shot, it was blurred again. So seemingly something is reacting to like the physical force of being jerked around and going out of focus somehow

      Sounds like something has come loose inside. Nothing to lose in tearing apart an inexpensive scope. Give it a try.

    I'm impressed with your diy knowledge and know how with working on these scopes. I have a question for you, I have a cheap BSA 4 x 16 power scope with the illuminated reticle, when you turn the magnification knob all the way from 4 power to 16 power the crosshairs go from + to make an x when the magnification hits the stop, and when you turn the magnification from 16 power to 4 power the magnification again comes to the stop the crosshair will move backwards and the crosshairs make another x. So when I want to straighten the crosshair from x to + I rotate the magnification ring either from 4 to 16 power or back to where the ring almost reaches the stop then I proceed gently turning the ring a little at a time enough to get the x to move till it looks like the + again .. I'm thinking the erector screws might be loose or something else causing the problem, do you have any thoughts other than throwing the scope in the garbage.

    • @kennethdellinger2037
      @kennethdellinger2037  Рік тому

      That should be repairable. Does the magnification change as it should?

    • @69easyrider
      @69easyrider Рік тому

      @@kennethdellinger2037 Yes the magnification works, everything seems to work fine just when i come to the end of the magnification the knob feels like it snags a tiny bit then if it's continued the crosshair will cock sideways like an x just before it stops then I have to run the magnification back the other way till I feel it catch and then carefully I try to inch the magnification knob ever so lightly to nudge the crosshair back straight up and down where I leave it, I usually try not to turn the magnification knob all the way to the max powers. The scope is a cheap BSA not really worth much, I've even tried to get in contact with the company but I never get any replies. I've had worked on other scopes but this one has the illuminated battery on the eye piece and I'm Leary of getting in over my head. I also have a 24 power BSA scope that needs work but that's another story in itself.

      @kennethdellinger2037  Рік тому

      @@69easyrider Possibly the locator pin or screw that keeps the erector from turning as you rotate the power ring is loose. I have disassembled BSA scopes before and most use the ball and socket method of mounting the erector. The reticles were installed by threading into the erector so I think that if the reticle was rotating it would likely remain in one position. You may remove the screw from the magnification ring and slide it back to see if there is a screw or pin to locate the erector and if so is it tight. You can also use a pen light to look through the ocular lens as you rotate the power ring and maybe see what is rotating. If you have the fast focus feature BSA normally uses a very small screw on the underside of the bell as a stop. If you remove the screw you can remove the lens only and take a look inside without disturbing anything else.

      Happy New Year, sorry it took me so long to get back with you, I finally got enough time to look at the scope the other day, I used my rework station to heat the screw in the magnification ring, I removed the screw and slid it back and didn't see any screw or pin other than the hole where the magnification screw is. There are three tiny jeweler screws holding the other part of the Magnification which I couldn't remove after using my rework station to heat those mini screws. I didn't want to damage the fragile screw heads so that's as far as I got.

      I do not. Make sure the exterior lenses are clean. Use alcohol or glass cleaner to be sure. If that's not the problem there may be moisture internally or less likely something on the internal lenses.

There were three screws in the general area that I have removed. @kennethdellinger2037  Рік тому +1

      @@felixv2432 Sounds like your parallax adjustment is incorrect. I describe the adjustment procedure in part 3 of the video. If you didn't install the objective lense with the same number of rotations the scope won't be in focus. Get on a steady rest and rotate the lense until the scope is in focus at a longer distance like 100 yards. Don't be concerned about the yardage references when you do this. You should be able to get the scope in focus that way. You could be a full rotation or more off. I always count my rotations when I remove the lense to simplify the process. Hope this helps.
