  • The quality and quantity of excellent recordings confirms Shostakovich as one of the greatest and most popular of all 20th-century composers.

Another illuminating presentation, Dave. Thanks for your work. Slightly off-piste; I actually really like DSCH's symphony no. 12.....

Hello Dave, first things first: thank you for the time you have for us! - I‘m still waiting for Symphony 11 with Vakhtang Jordania cond. the RPO on the somewhat obscure label Angelok (around 2000 I think). Nobody has heard about it but I think it’s a great 11! - Take care, Harry

Sorry if this isn't the best place for this but I didn't know where else to post it.
A year or more ago I bought the V. Petrenko/ Liverpool Shostakovich symphony cycle. I have enjoyed it very much, but for one reason or another (I have several other recordings, Haitink, Previn, Karajan, Ancerl etc), I had never listened to the 10th until tonight. Now there is a sort of low rumbling sound in the background, especially noticeable in the 1st and 3rd movements.
If i'd bought this as an LP I would have thought it was a pretty clean pressing, but on a CD, which I have always thought was supposed to be clear of any surface noise, it is a bit disconcerting.
There are other occasions where I have found problems - on numerous recordings where individual movements (or a single movement piece) has been subdivided into separate tracks, there is a sort of skip where the tracks coincide, rather than continuous music - eg on the Mahler 9 and Strauss Zarathustra discs in the DG 8 disc Karajan set - which is wonderful except for this issue. I can live with it but I'd rather not have to. Do you find the same thing?

Suggestion for review: the new Alpha label Shostakovich 14, Mikko Franck conducting, with Matthias Goerne (!) and Asmik Grigorian as soloists.

Someone told me a long time ago that Toscanini refused to conduct the Fifth because he felt that the tempo indications for the slow movement were too fast and those for the finale too slow. Can anyone substantiate?

A question for you, Dave: So about those A & B shelves behind you that will eventually be filled as you move Z to A around the overflow room. They should be empty, but they're not. What's going on back there? a sorting area? new arrivals yet to be slotted into the alphabetical order? non-classical stuff? things you're eliminating from the collection? Enquiring minds . . . (And I guess another puzzler: what DO you do when you get additional stuff that needs to be added to your now already tightly packed two-deep Tchaikovsky shelves?)

They are bits of the earlier alphabet that I'm adding to the Overflow Room. As for what I do with new stuff, well, hopefully I can start a new alphabet.

What are your thoughts on Ashkenazy Shostakovich Symphonies. I personally prefer them but alas I am not an expert.

Jansons/Philadelphia.. I used to have the 10th: orchestra in wonderful form, strangely well recorded by EMI..totally ruined (for me at least) by Jansons' loud vocalizations..especially ruinous in the "Stalin" movement, it sounded like it had a basso continuo. Every time it drove me crazy, with regret I had to bin it

Shostakovich is eminently collectible. Any CD library without Shostakovich (and Bach) lacks gravitas.
