Back in the 70's, I grew to about 6' 2" in high school and friends and I used to go play ball at my old elementary school on the 9 foot goals. I could just barely dunk a 10' goal on a good day, but on the 9' ones I used to try to do Dr. J. moves. He was the only one I really wanted to play like. He made it look so easy, so graceful. Always loved watching him play.
Let me tell you kids something. I watched this cat in his 20s!!!!! This cat was unstoppable. No answer defensively for this dude. When he arrived in Philly, they told him not to shoot as much and to pass more, and he did without defiance. A true team player. He was something that no one had ever seen before. Moves and shots out of A DREAM.
Yo man you can't let the ignorance of these young sissified players and fans get to you. Doc would dominate in any era. Kobe was never the best player in the league while Doc dominated the league!
Watching This Man Play Ball lifted my while going through a if difficult child, following him learn about character and glass.....Thank You Roy H To My GOAT
GREATEST PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE EVER. I'm admittedly biased because he played in Philly (where I'm from), but I don't think any other athlete in sports has ever represented his team, city, organization or himself with as much dignity, class or professionalism; while being considered one of the greatest players and most athletic players at the same time. Where did his class and professionalism go? Are we the fans to be bereft of his legacy of professionalism forever? I wonder.
All inspiring, awesome, heart-pounding, adrenaline running, skin tingling, hair raising experiences, thank you, thank you, thank you "Dr.J", YOUR FOOT-PRINTS ARE SOLIDIFIED, THERE IS NO OTHER ONE TO EVEN FILL YOUR VERSES.
+Cole Bran haha I thought the exact opposite after watching this. Less athletic than lebron, less athletic than jordan. Not nearly as skilled as either of them.
l'uomo che ha sfidato e vinto la legge della gravità. Si dopo lui ci sono stati altri grandissimi campioni. Ma Doctor J per me rimane la poesia del basket. Inimitabile.
No one changed the game so much in the sport... also, no one has more CLASS in the sport than Julius Erving. I'd STILL be a basketball fan today if there were more players like Dr. J. Yeah, depending on your age Michael, Kobe, Lebron, or someone was the GOAT. But let's face it, modern basketball wouldn't be what it is without the Doctor. He changed the game, and all Michael did was continue to do what Doc did (in a bigger way). From there, guys played a game that was changed many years before by one Julius 'Dr. J' Erving.
I remember seeing an interview of Magic Johnson where he was asked about the reverse layup shown at 3:19 of this video. Magic said he didn't know whether to take the ball out after the shot or hand it back to Dr. J and ask him to do it again! Classic!
mj said there was no nba televised in wilmington, nc and that david thompson was in fact his idol. he'd never seen a dr.j game until maybe college. amazing. i like that he was real in his answer. these kids always say that some guy is their idol that they weren't old enough to have seen play.
One of the most prolific scorers of all time I have him sixth on my list with just over 30,000.A very gifted athlete he had everything you need to be great with those huge hands fantastic leaping ability ,long arms and legs for a guy 6'6" he had the reach of a seven footer. Now Micheal has great hands but i,m giving the edge to Julius the way he would just pick the ball up in mid stride look at the dunk at 3:57. that is against Micheal Cooper he was one of the best defenders in history,
DR J GOAT THE NOUREYIEF OF BBALL...100 YRS AHEAD..MAGIC MOOVS,HIGTEST JUMB,SERIOUS PERSON,AMAZING FYSICAL STATE AND SHINING AS A PRECIOUS DIAMONT!GOD BLESS HIMXXXKOSMAS
I don't think they heard ya!! The Doctor was the smoothest of the smooth/coolest of the cool! He did on a move on the Pacers back in 81 that was just pure sickness. He went up for a jump shot but switched to a finger roll while in the air. I still remember that like it was yesterday.
this layup at 3.40 and the jumpshot in 3.48 gave the 1983 champion in 76ers vs lakers!drj was amzing, top 15 player ever in my opinion,he won 3 ring,he had 4 mvp,he led 76ers in 3 nba finals almost byhimself vs all-star lakers!great scorer, extremely athletic, fast and quick, strong, unstoppable in penetration, quite good middle range shooter, great defender...this guy avg 2 steals and 1.7bl in his career!there is no sf to avg this number!..the last dunks were when was 35!
I dig the highlight video... The only thing I wish they would have done differently, was choose a different song. Would have used, "Let It Flow" by the late, great Grover Washington Jr... Actually wrote that song for Dr. J. on his "Winelight" album. Much like jazz, there is also a lot of improvising in basketball, and nobody did it better than Dr. J. And I gotta say, if somebody writes a song for you or about you, you have to be pretty damn good.
The NBA was so strong in those days. Those Sixer teams were always going against the Lakers with Magic and Kareem or The Bird/McHale Celtics. It was an amazing time for basketball, never to be seen again probably.
Yup, but MJ dribbled it on his way to the basket. The dunk contest has always been about improving on established records (I'm not saying MJ is better than Dr. J); for example, Vince Carter did the first between-the-legs two-hander in a dunk contest, and he made it look easy.
@@potlimit2002 ...You're both wrong! Doc was executing those moves, including jumping from the foul line while he was in high school. His high school coach was the key witness. I used to watch the irrepressible Julius Winfield Erving II at Rucker Park and the Nassau Colosseum. As a Small Forward, he was the fastest one ever. Doc's hands are twelve-inch from the wrists. He has long legs and shoe size are sixteen inches. Doc's wingspan equals to a seven footer. He stands at six feet and seven inches.

The Dr. is in! Dr. J was an artist. You just don't see guys now doing what he did then. Amazing athlete.
Ginobili is as close as it gets in these days. Sadly, this is probably his last year.
Close to the Doctor? Please.
+banklikefrankwhite1 Close to whoooo ??? please. ..

MJ, Kobe...take a seat and recognize the man who paved the way for you both.

No wonder I watched "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" so many times back in the day!
That Dr. J footage still makes jaws drop.
I wish I was alive to watch these players, let alone Erving.
Jaykie Fonseca I meant live. Not past videos on UA-cam.
3:58 is one the most iconic dunks of all time. No question in my mind that is what led to the Jordan cradle dunk. The Doctor started it all...
Qué grande Dr. J! Elegante al máximo.
Greatest to ever play Idc what nobody has to say

The Doctor dunking from the free throw line at 34 years old, he must've dunked on just about every other player in the league.
One of the greatest
All in All THE BEST Ball player to ever play the game.

Who is Jordon? I think it was Jordan.
Just how great was this guy..he invented swagger 😄🥊🇨🇦

Revolutionized the dunk! My favorite player of all time
Dr. J, when I was growing up he was one of the icons...
A player who can do reverse layups the best. God i enjoy watching his videos
Dr. J imitated; never can be duplicated.
Dr.J was the greatest dunker of all time and he can still dunk at the age of 63.

Oh wow, Dan Majerle. What a Hall of Fame player. And Dumas? One of the greatest journeymen in the history of basketball.
the smoothiest dunker ever
I agree. Magic and Bird were mainly pass and shoot, fashionably, of course.
But the Doc was all athleticism and highlights!
imo dr. j is the GOAT because he was the OG of basketball
It's all in the way he could hold the ball so comfortably, then obviously the skill kicks in.
awesome
The IceMan has some great highlights as well. Doc is still my favorite though.

i agree. What's right, is right.
Whos a better dunker? Vince Carter or Dr. J
