As a retired engineer with limited knowledge about car engine strips, I am so glad Ive seen a number of unbiased videos including this one about the 'award winning' 1.0litre ford ecoboost engines. My Take:- what on earth were Ford thinking when they designed such a fatally flawed piece of machinery ???? wet belts inside the sump that when they begin to wear, readily clog the whole works up????? without multiple oil changes ?????? I therefore would not have any vehicle with that 'piece of crap' for a motor inside it so, Im glad I've watched a number of youtube videos about this crappy engine, pointing out the real issues, over and over with it So, thanks for taking the time to film this.

Thanks for the comment it's greatly appreciated. I didn't realize this was an award winning engine. Must have been before issues started to become apparent. If they had fitted it with a timing chain it would likely have a better reputation. I assume it costs more to put a chain on it over a belt. . . . . .
I'm with you there, wouldn't want to own another car with that engine powering it.

Just to make things clear - This engine has been tortured with lack of oil changes and the buildup in the pickup is particles from the timingbelt. YOU need to keep these engines in order with frequent oil changes, as this problem is because of contaminated oil that breaks down the timingbelt and clogs up the pickup and starves the engine... Always use the Castrol Ford spec oil and using thicker oil will also be a no no because of vvt, and the viscosity is made for this engine for a reason..

I know this, first thing I did was check the service history and it was 35,000 miles without a service. Also the guy I bought it off had apparently had it remapped to 160ish bhp and at 3 years old had already needed a new turbo. I'm well aware this engine has been abused so thanks for telling me what I already know.

@@Papa77sGarage Yeah i know you were getting it running - But the engine has already suffered from the neglect, 35000 miles without a oil change must also be a record.. Did you change the timingbelt before flipping it..?

@@martinrasmussen8745all I did was clean the oil pick up and then change the oil and filter. It then went to We Buy Any Car.com and they paid me a tidy profit. I wouldn't dream of flipping it on to a regular member of the public. I couldn't take their money knowing that I'd been picking chunks of metal from the sump. It would have needed a reconditioned engine before I even thought about doing that.

@@Papa77sGarage I Agree.... But i would be sad to own this - not only because of the worn belt, but the wear on the engine must have been quite bad... But these engines are a expensive lessons learned when oil changes go too far and ppl rarely want to spens the money on extra oil changes when needed.. Along with coolant issues and leaking coolant on turbo's they are pretty prone to fail in other aspects too..

NO oil getting to it. Checked the oil feed pipe which is clear. Oil pressure warning light still goes out ok. Blockage must be between the filter and turbo oil inlet pipe but no idea where or how to remove it.

@@rafael6693 It's a timingbelt and not a chain.. The timingbelt is a concern and if you go this long as stated 35000 miles it's already fucked.. The timingbelt will be alright if you keep using the Castrol and change the oil often.. I've seen engines with normal oil change intervals being fine and sump clean, so either you need to do the oil changes freuently or if you do long trips most of the time the oil does not get contaminated as much. But on these engines i would not go longer than 10Kmiles and preferable 5-7Kmiles.. Oil is cheap - Engines ain't..

@@martinrasmussen8745 yeah i meant time belt sry. It is always important to put the oil that the manufacturer says to put. My car is having this exact problem and the mechanic said a lot of ford and peugeots with this belt are having this problems.he is waiting for the new timing chain to arrive, he already changed the oil pump and the solenoid that controls the oil pressure. But he said that only after turning on the engine we will see if everything is alright because basically after this oil light appears that engine parts are not being lubrificated which means the engine is probably gone. I parked the car 30 seconds after this oil light appears but we never know it is probably more then sufficient, I didn’t hear any noise in this interval. He said he made the diagnosis and said probably everything is fine before he changed anything, but it is weird because he had to turn the engine on before ( at least i assume) lol

@@rafael6693 Can't say if your engine has problems with lack of oil or pressure drop because of the timingbelt clogging up the pickup.. But the severe cases will mean a new engine or your lucky that it has not starved the too much engine from lack of lubrication.. It can jump timing if the belt is worn enough and as you don't have any excessive noises you might be fine.. Normal timingbelt changes will only need the belts for the cams/crank and also the belt for the oil pump - More severe cases it would be a good idea to change the oil pump as well.. PSA has already change their intervals for timingbelts, but they are some what easier to change than the Fords...

@@joshdd1 I'm pretty sure that's the only way you can replace it. I think the oil pump belt sits behind the timing belt, that's why I advise changing them both together. There should be enough room to get the pump belt off with the sump in place however I've never actually changed one so I could be wrong. I do know my boss has recently bought the equipment to do them and it doesn't seem as straight forward as a usual timing belt. We haven't had one in for replacement yet but I'm waiting for the day.

Hi, this video showed me that my fiesta is most probably concerned. I don't have oil red light but I have ratteling when engine is heating. And I have this issue even if I bought it brand new in 2013 did oil change every 20.000km or 1 year.
Anyhow, I'm removing my oil sump today and I'm facing an issue:
I cannot figure out how to remove the heatshield. On the front I'm blocked by A/C radiator and fitting, on top, the heatshield is blocked by the turbocharger and every directions the sensor at turbocharger outlet does not allow to move a lot.
@Papa77 or anybody else; do you have a tip or advice? Thanks!

If I remember correctly there was some 10mm and 8mm bolts. I think I had to remove the oxygen sensor from the downpipe also. With yours being a 2013 it is going to be a Mk7 fiesta whereas this one is a 2017 mk 8. Now I haven't compared the two side by side so can't say for sure whether they are the same process of removal but they will be similar. I hope this helps.

    • @matthieud8693
      @matthieud8693 3 роки тому +1

Thanks for your answer @Papa 77! For the heat-shield, I removed the oxygen sensor (the one on top of the exhaust). The only thing is: get a 22mm wrench ^^ I had only an adjustable wrench + WD40 + rubber hammer it worked but it could be better with the right tools :)
There was almost no difference between your 2017 and my 2013. Except maybe some differences related to right/left steering wheel (I'm french ;) ).
Before I explain my experience, I let you know that my oil inlet was 100% clean.... so my problem is somewhere else. Maybe the oil pump solenoid, I saw video on potential problems on it.
(french translation at the bottom / traduction française plus bas)
Since I have (almost) finish I share my experience and differences to your video:
-Accessory belt plastic cover: I removed it completely for full access to the 3rd blot of the A/C compressor. For this, you have to remove 2 additional 8mm bolts of the cover located below the turbocharger (inlet and outlet). For (way) better access: remove the right hand front beam it takes 2 bolts T30 + a plastic screw; then remove the flexible hose that goes from turbocharger outlet down to the heat exchange (7mm collar).
Then finally there is a plastic bracket for the previous hose and another one. To remove it you have to remove 1st the "L shaped" plastic part that is fitted to the turbocharger inlet.
Once you have done the above; the plastic cover can be removed by the bottom.
-Accessory belt: when I tuned the tensionner counterclockwise, the bolt untighten.... my trick: I pinched the belt (hard) to make the tensionner move, then I blocked it using my torks wrench, and I was able to move the belt with my 2nd hand.
-Exhaust: What you didn't filmed is: Remove the 4 bolts at the outlet (as you showed), remove 2 10mm bolts visible from the top, it tightens a "small" heat-shield to the engine block. Finally there is a "hidden" 10mm at the bottom of the exhaust line to maintain it to then engine block. Apologize, I have no pictures or video.
Also: You may get a "female" tork socket to remove properly the lug nut of the exhaust (one out of four) without it I had to struggle with 2 nuts face to face to remove it. Otherwise the exhaust cannot be fully removed.
Finally: I removed the first exhaust silent block to have more movement.
-Oil sump stuck: I used a small crowbar at one corner (the only one where it is possible), it's located on front, left hand side. A 2nd hand was handy to maintain the exhaust line in up position while fighting with the sump and my crowbar.
-Oil sump: I was not able to totally remove it; it was stuck at 90°. The 2 lug nuts of the bottom of the exhaust line were blocking any additional movement.
-Remounting: the sealing of the sump was such a pain with almost no access to clean and prepare the new gasket. My advide if you have the right tools it to totally remove the first part of the exaust in order to have full access to the sump and so on.

No worries, the best advice would be to keep on top of the servicing. Perhaps even do it sooner than the recommended intervals using the correct oil. As for taking the sump off, I did it as and when I had time (it wasn't my daily driver.) I would set aside a full day for it. I have another video in which I clean the pump out with it removed from the car. Get as much info as you can before starting, whether that's from other UA-cam videos or forums online. What an piece of shit engine... We just did a timing belt for one of these and when went for a test drive, the oil light came on pretty soon? We took the oilpan out and I have never seen so much scrap on the pickup screen and in the pan. The owner hadnt paid any attention to the oil light... and he was the one who drove it straight to the shop so we had no freaking clue wtf had happened... great... Just great ..

I haven't had much to do with them but from what I've heard, very unreliable.
