The amount of knowledge available on Schoolism for $15/month completely blows my mind. I'm about a year and a half into my subscription (I was a Kickstarter backer) and I have learned so much. There's no doubt in my mind that I'm leaping years ahead every time I take a class and do the assignments. I have a desire to take almost all of the classes, so I'll probably continue to be a subscriber for a good long time! Other than time spend on deliberate practice, there's no better investment I've ever made in my art career.
The part about spouse I want to add that most people separate friendzone with date and I'd say you can't last if you can't be best friends and can lean on eachother when you need support. You need to enjoy each others company and I myself value that I found someone that inspires me to grow and that really encourages me and boosts me when I don't feel confident. I have not taken any schoolism class YET but I want to "master" the classes I'm learning before I take on another category and kind of grow one aspect at the time. I love that schoolism exists though! And taking classes and reading books and stuff is like downloading decades of knowledge and I love how fun it is to see yourself leapfrog in something after watching a teacher show you techniques and happen to say things that just make so much sense and really clicks in the common sense and stick with you forever! Learning from masters is like grabbing a star in Super Mario. You could choose to not grab it but when you know it's right there - why wouldn't you?
I can recommend Schoolism subscription, I was lucky enough to meet Bobby at a convention who put me onto the courses. I was actually stuck in a rut with my art, and was barley enjoy doing it anymore, but once I started following the subscription and learning again I felt like I made progress with my art and began to enjoy it more, cheers Bobby!!
The part about being "self-taught" hit me pretty hard. For better or for worse I think I'm pretty stubborn, refusing to take art courses because being self-taught sounds cool (but also refusing to give up drawing even after learning very little during a whole year). Before watching this video I didn't think I needed a wake up call, but I think I just got it. It's midnight now, but tomorrow I'll get a Schoolism subscription and hopefully start learning something!
Mads W I just did the same yesterday. I was too cheap to do regular classes, too thin skinned to hear criticism from a human standing next to me. My hope is I can get to a point I respect my own work I will be able to hear constructively what someone says.
Referring to the convo at around 53:00 Sam Nielson's class was a HUGE time saver for me and was filled with countless "aha" moments. I literally would never have discovered material rendering properties had I not taken his Schoolism course! I still can't do it perfectly, but i actually know what to look for and how to get there. Its crazy how i look at art i used to admire and now i see it with fresh eyes post taking that class and see a bunch of mistakes! LOL
Intermediate Fine Art student subscribed to schoolism, here, for anyone wanting a review--I do think it's worth the 15 (tho I probably wouldn't have purchased at 30/month, tbh) for some of the classes, despite most of it is aimed at digital art. Essentials of Realism was a great refresher from college drawing classes and I picked up some new tricks; very excited for creature anatomy, lighting fundamentals, and the materials classes coming out such as watercolor. Excited for the upcoming textures class, as well! Bc I'm not a digital artist, I do imagine I will cancel within the next year or so once I've gotten everything I personally can get. Very cool nontheless, to be learning from pros.
I recently subscribed schoolism last month after being your fan for a year so motivated, so much knowledge. Your channel help me keep up on my art a lot, So many thanks.
I never miss a single stream...whenever I work, I just play the video and keep motivated myself to improve everyday....Its so good to know about the journey of my favourite artist..Thank you so much for doing these streams...:)
Bobby, so in this video you told us to share if its worth 15 bucks a month to subscribe to schoolism, Let me say it is! I learned more from 1 month than i learned in a whole year at college! It was great! Also thanks to Nathan Fowkes for his participation in schoolism! He did an incredible job with his classes!
Hi Bobby and all, love your videos, long time devoted fan and aspiring artist! WHAT MOTIVATES ME AS AN ARTIST? For me, my overall motivation consists of two things, what inspires me to create artwork I enjoy and what's my main goal I hope to achieve when I'm finished creating. Perhaps it could be boiled down to emotional content. That's how I feel about this subject.
This is very relevant to me because motivation vs. lazing around is such a real struggle for me. And i think--its not because I dont want it enough, but maybe im not surrounding myself with inspiration enough. Anyone else feels that way?
agree 1000% schoolism is an absolute nobrainer, just started a week ago and i love it so much! shouldve done so much earlier! btw i also use a sleeping mask, its soo nice. i could still use the light alarm since everytim i wake up my mask is always of somehow hahah
Great video with advice that I personally needed right now (gotta get fired up!) I'm currently subscribed to Terryl Whitlach's creature anatomy class and it is 100% worth it. My understanding of anatomy has definitely grown even just half way through the class. She is a great teacher with tons of useful knowledge about creatures and -why- their anatomy works.
great episode jon, bobby, and masae. curious about that alarm clock that masae uses! and lol at the question about the spouse, really good advice all around!
I ma taking andrew hou's introuduction to digital drawing and it is soooooooooo helpful i learned so much not only about the software but also other things that dont neceserily belong to digital art like differences from cast shadows and form shadow and more
Hi +dogload, I work at Schoolism! I took Andrew Hou's class as well, and it helped me so much!! It really helped me get a better handle on photoshop. So great to hear that you are enjoying it!! :D ~ Richelle
Hey Bobby! :) I find you very inspirational and what you said about going 100% really speaks to me - but because I am going 100% (or attempting hard to do so) I have been struggeling a lot with high pulse attcks lately and feel extremely stressed. What do you suggest I do to find my inner calm while still styaing as productive as possible?
Hi +fancylikethat, I work at Schoolism! I am so sorry to hear about your personal struggles with stress, and trying to find your inner calm! That can definitely be a challenge! What works for you will in the end be a personal journey, and everyone is so different in what works for them. Some things to maybe consider would be to make sure you're getting proper, restful sleep! Having a routine at night can help the brain begin to prepare for bed. Sleep is such an important thing for our minds and bodies in dealing with stress. Meditation is also a great thing to try, there is an app called 'Headspace' that's only 10 minutes, and you can do this whenever you like. Deep breathing for 10 minutes in the morning would even be great! Exercise is also important, even putting aside 30 minute walks 3X a week can help, or maybe yoga! If you find a great studio with great teachers this can really bring mindfulness into your daily routine. Lastly, remember to always bring joy into your life, whenever you can! Or maybe finding a new hobby, such as crafting, that would allow you to be creative but not stress about what you're producing. Sending good thoughts your way! ~ Richelle
I don't think I could use my limited time as a motivation, at least not for now; it triggers my feelings of guilt. I prefer looking at artwork for motivation and inspiration, the same as Jonathan Hardesty.
I just don't understand artists that think they are 100% self taught, it's just impossible now, just let pro teachers help you with your art and stop being an introvest damnit x)

Prozac! :).
This Jonathan Hardesty sounds like he has the voice of Bob Saget lol

I cringe too when I notice it but some times it slips. I'm going to try and work on it. Unfortunately I'm more of an artist than a talk show host.
