I have been using HMH for 4 yrs, starting year 5. There are MANY components, but overwhelming for teachers to "piece" together a good road map for the classroom. It is defiantly overwhelming to new teachers who are learning the material and how to write lesson plans. I dove in determined to find the pieces that were the best fit for my students. I am about the same with you on which stories I use. I also love that I have the option to assign Spanish and English. I really like Writable and Amira, but the district took it away. I did pair some of the stories with other novels. For example, Willie B. is great with The One and Only Ivan and The True Story of Ivan (Children's book) It was such a great way to tie in fiction and nonfiction. The students enjoyed doing a group project on the characters I bought from Teachers Pay Teachers. This year we will add a small research assignment on the History of the Atlanta Zoo and write and argumentative paper.
Great job! Keep on tailoring it to your kids needs and what you think it’s appropriate! HMH is a complicated curriculum for everyone but specially newcomers.. it’s sad they took away Amira and Writable because they were great supports for ESL kids! We don’t use HMH anymore, We are using another curriculum called Amplify which is even worse! Thanks for all you do!! Have a fantastic school year!
Thank you for sharing! This is my second year using this curriculum and I still feel like I am not using it to the best of my ability. I also agree about the stories, some of them are so long and it takes us forever to finish them!
Hello there and thank you for your comment! This is a challenging curriculum, specially if you have students below grade level, so it’s not you! We used it for three years and the district decided to change it right away. Good luck and have a fantastic school year!
Hello there! It all depends on the amount of time you have for your class and the academic level of your students. I’ve done some stories in parts. Others I’ve done at once. I think just the poems I’ve done in one read. Some of the texts are above grade level so I suggest you do those in parts. If you have a long class period then you can read it at once but then do close reading. Good luck!
Hello there! The intention of the video is to guide teachers through the components so that you can use it to teach. In order to see and example lesson you’ll need your coach to teach you.

do you recommend reading parts of the book daily or just doing one read?

She basically showed us what books she used. She didn't show us how to use HMH into the curriculum.
