When he says the British invented India, he's referring to India as a modern democratic nation state, not Indian civilisation.
It is apt that it started with the Life of Brian Roman scene because the Indian's hatred of Brit's would be the same as Brit's hating the Roman's for their occupation which was far more brutal.
We don't we recognise how many advancements came with their civilisation and said, "Call that a Civilisation? Hold my beer!"
by and large they weren't civilised.

The British put a stop to that then when India demanded its Independence, the majority of both Hindus and Muslims demanded partition before we left. Both threatened civil war and in fact they had more or less starred that, until partition. The British left there were also under such threat they had to do it asap. Still it was achieved and what remained India was Islam free. It was they themselves who let Islam and mosques back in and there is trouble to this day because of it.
Also, Hindus outside of India are peaceful but not always in their homelands. Some still mass murder christian too.
India wasn't a sovereign country under the rule of its own indigenous people before the British. Too much for here so go learn.
The British cleaned up the filthy Ganges and other rivers.
The British also put a stop to suti, burning widows alive.
The British have them the best sewage system in the world in 1870. Better than our own! Indians let it break down, not maintained nor updated. Recently, the British treasury, OUR tax money, was paid to Japan to install up to date new toilets which are strangley similar to our old straw instead of flushing water toilets. However, they are modern materials and easily cleaned and kept up. Do I believe India landed anything on the moon 😂

We never claim to be perfect, we Brits were born out of fire that lasted thousands of years across Europe. But, for all the bad deeds we committed we were a catalyst for progress with an almost evangelical zeal to embrace it, accelerate it, and spread it. We had our time and we made the most of it, not even nuclear war will turn the clocks back now and our contributions and revolutions will last as long as Human civilisation exists.
Thats what happens when you invent the Industrial revolution thats what really changed the world, that and the railway ,before that every one in the world only went as far as a horse can ride then youd have to stay over night and feed and rest your horse so people really stayed local .But then the traines came along then it was cars and now we have space ships
That's an interesting point. Systems Competition. When you have a homogenous civilisation, you lose that. So much of progress is based around it. I wonder what is lost by globalisation.

Globalisation is like all economic upheavals, it comes with winners and losers. Workers in developed economies see a loss of work and competition on remaining workers wages and conditions. The business owners make more money, developing economies get to accelerate their economies in the short and medium term through the corporate exploitation of their people until their economy grows to the point that they are no longer competitive with now less developed countries who next become exploited as the production gets moved again. Now, in the very long term eventually there will be (in theory) no countries at the bottom to be exploited, but this comes at the expense of one set of people over another lasting potentially generations.

I am always amazed that everyone on this channel is so ignorant about how the british advanced india and turned it from a medieval slave-based hellhole into a modern country with human rights and democracy. Everything regarding human freedom that indians enjoy today came from Britain, and nowhere else. Democracy, human rights, independent courts, private property, the ability to choose your religion, where you live, your job, basic things like that. 90% of indians were slaves before the british arrived, and women were literally property. So if you enjoy not being a slave, thank the British, because nobody else lifted a finger to free you in all of history. Oh, and it was the Brits who made india into a country, before that it was a just geographical region.
The hell hole you describe is exactly your country before 17the century, it was true for every ancient civilizations - Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Romans, Greeks all of them had dark periods, India being an flourishing ancient civilization also had it's decay, it's just that we were decaying when others in world were starting to build back, it takes 100s of years to build back a civilization like China and India. I visited India recently and met with a Kashmiri man called Pran. I told him that it was a shame about British colonialism and he replied that it was the age of colonialism; better the British than the Dutch, French, Germans or Portuguese. He told me that the countries that were part of the British Empire were mostly now mature democracies, where the rule of law prevails. Compare that with the Spanish and South and Central America. Despot and despot, revolution after revolution. Made me rethink everything.

About India - good or bad? I'd say ask my husband - he was from India but sadly he died 10 years ago. Yes, I had to persuade him to change his Indian Passport to British because it was easier for travelling but I don't think he ever regretted it. He cheered for India in Cricket, but he cheered for us English in so much else of life. Yes, we traded with India and I reckon I got a really great bargain!

No doubt we did great damage to your economy. That can't be disputed. Yes, we took great valuables from there.
But let's not pretend that India was a perfectly fair country to its own people. There was slavery, different sects/ castes who were looked down upon, and ruled by the elites.
It wasn't a fair system at all, so let's not pretend it was a wonderful place before we took it over. It wasn't.
As far as colonisation. Most countries that were colonised have a better standard of living than non colonised countries. For all we took, we also gave them something back, no doubt in my mind about that.
But just like India, in the days we took you over. Britain was ruled by the elites. The British working class had no real rights. Look up the Peterloo massacre of 1819. The working class wanted a parlimental representative and a right to vote. At that time, only around 10 to 15% of Englishs were allowed a vote. The working class only got the right in 1918. We didn't gain anything from colonisation in any way. Only the elites gained, much like today, really.
You might want to read about the British crusade to end the worldwide practice of slavery, which had been normal for thousands of years.
So, in essence, yes, we did some things that are bad, but also did some good as well.
Much like the Romans did when they had a big empire, it brought along many things that were life improving to many countries.
I feel neither shame nor pride for what happened in the past.

Don't forget tea, the British brought tea from China and planted it in India because the climate would make a better cuppa. And today India are the worlds biggest importers of the worlds best tea's, which must be Good for your economy im sure.
Britain got black tea from the Assam tribe. They got Opium from them first and tried using that to break the Chinese monopoly on tea (The Opium Wars) then realised that they also had a form of tea, we drink primarily teas that originate from the Assam tribe's method. It's all the same plant, in reality, but the drying method is what changes the colour and flavour. BTW India is currently a net importer of tea, the World's largest net exporter of tea is Kenya where the vast majority of the British Isles gets it's tea from today, and has done for decades.

Yup, the opium tribe we used to employ to take their opium to China also drank tea. Once we actually realised, the Opium wars were over.
The bridge in the photo was built in 1779, was the first iron bridge, and is still standing where it was built, although traffic is no longer allowed to cross it, you can still walk across it.
I visited the bridge a couple of years ago and there was a team of American engineers there to look at it. They were thrilled.
India was split into different areas Britain helped unite them. Look at countries influenced by the British and have a democratic. Hong Kong given back to China then the people of Hong Kong marching in the streets with the union flag. Parts of Africa after Britain left war lords took over and murdered millions. Some countries Britain invaded were already ruled by others countries like France. Spain. Germany. And the Dutch countries that at the time Britain was at war with. So after defeating those countries Britain took control of the colonies.
You have to remember that the British were the most successful civilization in history. Of course they made mistakes, but it's essentially Britain that mostly created the Western civilization we know today. Also, it should be remembered that the British Empire was the most benevolent empire that ever existed. The world would be in a lot worse place if Britain had never existed. Nope. You're talking about mortar - which is often partly made of Portland cement. Portland cement is an ingredient that when mixed with water and an aggregate (usually stones) turns into concrete. Pretty much every bit of modern concrete in buildings, pathways, dams etc is based on Portland cement.

The reach of the British empire and the assimilation of so many cultures, so much knowledge and so many strong backs and minds are more a testament to what can be achieved when so much of the world is put to a common goal. But if history has taught us anything it’s that humans will only do this when there is a certain ruthlessness at the helm. Protectionism and nationalism can only achieve so much and tends to benefit one side at the expense of the other.
Britains history before all of the achievements is one of invasion, subjugation, in fighting between tribes and kingdoms and conquest.
I was informed by an well educated Filipino that it was a pity Great Britain gave Manila back to the Spanish in 1764 after deafeating them in 1762 as part of an overall peace treaty in Europe. Otherwise, he said his country would be like Malaysia or Singapore today.
I wish people would understand that during most of the British colonisation, that the lower classes in Britain never benefitted and in some ways as oppressed as people in other countries, that we were colonising.
Look at the Peterloo massacre of 1819. Every family member had to work just to try survive in them times, even kids. The elites got all the benefits, not the British people. In fact working class people didn't get the right to vote until 1918.
But not everything is bad that Britain did. The crusade against slavery, which was practiced worldwide at that time. Most countries that got colonised tends to have a better standard of living then non-colonised countries.
Always talk about what we took, but not what we gave back to countries.

Very nice reaction. Brits have done a lot haven't they? I love the surprise when you realise British innovations effectively built the modern world. Then the Japanese miniaturised it and the Americans sold it for billions. Just a couple of additional points to make.
The Iron Bridge is in ,appropriately, the town of Ironbridge in Shropshire. It is no longer used for vehicular traffic but is open for pedestrian use. I know, I've crossed it. It was built in 1779.
India as you know it did not exist in 1700 (before the significant British and French presence) but was a collection of around 30 individual, largely antagonistic, petty kingdoms after the decline of the Mughal Empire after 1707. It was the British who , having disposed of the French presence, created a unified India.
It was the British who outlawed thuggee and dacoitry in the period 1836 -1848. Organised criminal gangs were bad for business and it was always all about the trade. Think like this - in the 1770's Britain could send resources to fight the French/Dutch/traitors in the Thirteen colonies (USA) or to fight the French and local allies in India. The US was an economic backwater whilst India was 20-25% of global GDP. Where would you spend?

When the British left India the continent blew up into civil war with over a million dead and many more millions injured which was a lot worse than anything the British did.

The one thing I wish the British had done was to give the Romani people back their ancestral lands in India and created a new country for us.
All taxation in India stayed in India to pay for infrastructure, medical treatments, schools etc. Britain did make profit from India, but it was done through trade, not robbery, for which life in India improved for the majority of your peoples.
There's a lot of respect for India here in England. When the Brits went to India they brought back a lot of India with when they came back to England. Lots of hindi words, Indian food is VERY popular here, and all the mysticism of India. You can find a lot of Indian influences here in England. xxx

The British were no worse, & actually far better than most colonial powers around the world.
India was backward by European standards before the British went there, riven with petty states ruled by tyrannical despots & always at war with each other, It was also ruled by the despotic & cruel Mughals etc. Most of the population were little more than slaves, & split into a strict devisive caste system. The British ended practices like Suttee, the burning of widows on their husbands funeral fires. They ended the petty wars, & introduced a British type legal & and administrative system, as well as the advances of modern technology. He missed out George Cayley, who worked out the principles of aerodynamics & flight, 1 hundred years before the Wright brothers made the first powered aircraft. That is because he couldn't find a motor for his gliders in the early 19th century, but he was working towards it. You can't blame all the British for what a few did in the past. All the other people that invaded India took what they could from it, & many people within the sub continent were cruel to each other. It wasn't the British that slaughtered millions at Partition, that was Hindu against Muslim violence, nothing to do with the British. The peoples of India did that themselves, because the different leaders, Jinhar etc, couldn't agree. Also, famines & epidemics were regular events throughout Indian history, which the Indian rulers themselves did little to assuage. At least the British vastly improved life in India, & gifted it Democratic institutions etc.

One thing rarely stressed - being referred to a mongrel people and a nation of shop keepers, is not far from the reality. Britain benefited enormously from waves of immigration, conquest and colonisation - Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Friesians, Romans, Vikings, Normans - not mention the refuge it gave to European groups like the Lombard's, Flemish, Huguenots, Jews - all making significant contributions to Britain and its industries like finance, agriculture and mining. We now have the Commonwealth nations heavily represented and all make their own valuable contributions. "Racial purity" has never, ever been a British thing, and any groups that says it, are idiots - and our contribution to the creation of the modern world owes a great deal to that diversity. Britain's contribution to the modern world really is hard to over state, but it really is a success story of a very mongrel nation!

what we are also forgetting is what India gave us. some of the best engineers at that time were Indian .they had years of overcoming problems .they just needed help with how to do it.but once they had access to new ways and tools they made increadable things.

Its really hard to rationally view the old world through new eyes. Up till just over 200 years ago you would be hung in the UK for stealing, let that sink in. Life for most was brutal and hard and most people were poor. The same goes for the rest of the west. The idea of going to another country to trade often by force was fairly normalcbut I know bad stuff happened and im not about to try and excuse that. Thank god there was major progress as the whole world got many times better in a relatively short time. They stopped The Thuggee of India and they stopped wives being burned , alive , when thier husband passed away. it was a common practice in some parts back then . Know as : Sati . I think it still goes on in some places today .. But I cant be sure of that .

Britain did not tax India. The ruling government was mostly Indian, and the judges in the court system were overwhelmingly Indian too. This is all a matter of India's and Britain's national records. Indian Provinces were administered by Indian civil servants.
The murder of Sihks at Amritsar led to the imprisonment of the commander of the British forces that massacred those people. It was a terrible crime and he was quite rightly punished. It was a shameful act.
The decision to partition India was forced by Indian politicians. The British did not have enough troops to control the civil disobedience, and in truth to enforce martial law would have likely cost as many lives and caused a similar level of harm. And then, inevitably, partition would have happened nonetheless.
I am not advocating colonialism, it is a terrible thing to be ruled by another nation. I am just saying there are often no good choices in some situations.

I'm English, and sure, things didn't go well sometimes, but people in other nations should learn their own histories before attempting to pass judgement. And India wasn't a country beforehand, it was the name of a subcontinent of different factions that did not get along. There was plenty of death and slavery before any white person got there. Truth is all.
There is no doubt the British Empire was brutal and avaricious, it robbed whole continents of their wealth, but it was a class thing rather than a National action. It might not come as any kind of consolation but the British people were treated no better than the people of the countries the empire conquered. That is not to make any excuse for the brutal behaviour of British soldiers during colonisation, it's just to say that they themselves had been brutalised too. It was the greed of the British upper classes, the rich and powerful, that drove such robbery. And it's those same rich and powerful classes, of every nationality, who still rob the workers of their wealth across the world today.

Taxes from colonies did not go back to Britain to fund science and technology. Or indeed to fund anything in the UK done by the government. Of course there was looting of vsluables, but it wasn't economically important. There were basically five functions for colonies in the Empire. First prestige, this applied to all, the bigger it was the more power it had. Second strategic, this is where a colonies position was of military value, like Gibraltar. If a colony only had these two qualities, and many did, then they actually cost the British tax payer money to run them, most African colonies were loss making. The third was for settlement, obviously Australia etc. Fourth plantations, large scale commercial production of crops. No Brits no rubber plantations they developed those, and no Brits no tea grown in India, they stole seeds from China and developed them for Indian conditions. Finally trade, that was really what the Empire was for, a market for British goods, it was that part of it which contributed to the industrial revolution. So a bit more than Railways, imagine India with no tea and no cricket. Modern sport was essentially a British invension.

The British made India rich. They gave out loans at modest interest rates to Indians to start local businesses. This brought about commercial activity, banking, insurance, a stock market etc. Soon the wealthy Indians were travelling abroad with British empire, and a wealthy Indian merchant class developed.

The Japanese tried to do just that and the horrors of a Japanese invasion don't bare thinking about. They killed 250.000 in China alone. They were stopped by a combined British and Indian army at Imphal and Kohima. British and Indian troops actually made quite a combination.

India was not colonised until the 1857 mutiny. Before this, a British trading company would influence the politics and wars in India but the British did not rule at this time.
I said and meant pedantic......1608 to 1947 you do the math! Elizabeth 1st gave the charter to Clive of India, clearly you are referring to the Raj, however the East India Company were accompanied by several regiments of the British army and Indian army (lead by British officers), you can be as pompous as you like, but British rule is British rule, even though it only came under direct British Parliamentary rule for 89 years.

Britain did a lot of bad but so did a lot of other countries the difference is Britain turned it around and did more good than bad but for some reason people like to cling onto the bad and keep reminding us of the bad while all at the same time still wanting to visit Britain or in many cases legally move and live in Britain and speak English.

Other great minds were Shankaracharya, Ramanujan, Ramakrishna, Lord Chaitanya, Thyagraja, Guru Gobind Singhji and many others. These personalities elucidated ways to free the mind from material bondage and to find real bliss. The concept of Time and Space, the nature of the Universe, the nature of humans etc all taught in detail in ancient times. This ancient civilisation still exists today as it ever has, and will continue to do so while this colonial power and that colonial power comes and goes. What is real always survives while what is false is temporary.

I think that the British Empire is too big a thing to be boiled down to either 'good' or 'bad' - it caused immeasurable suffering but also produced immeasurable good. I think that with history and assessing "good" or "bad" you cannot use the morals of today to judge- if you do so then basically every ruler, leader, or peoples, would be classed as "evil" by todays standards. You have to base your assessment on the world at the time and compare thus so. By doing so you get a true reality. One big thing he missed out on that had a great impact on the world was that the British Empire was the 1st Empire in history to outlaw slavery. Brits didn't invent algebra or boson energy particle or wireless communication technology, these were Indian inventions. Look closely to the list of their inventions, you shall find they were meant to smoothen systematic loot and exploitation of their vast colonies. Then they tapped into the local knowledge of their global empire, and had the luxury to sit at home and focus on research while half the world was prioritizing on surviving, forget doing scientific research. They also appreciated many inventions from their colonies. As for 'no brits, no modern times' is concerned, science and advancement is in human nature and we are very competitive there. If newton wouldn't discover gravity, someone else would. Sometimes it's talent first, sometimes it's luck, and sometimes it's unfair advantage. Most brit innovations can be categorized as the third one. Science never stops. India survived mughals, india survived brits, and that is a bigger achievement as long as humanity is concerned.
No Country is with fault, but plenty with nothing to be proud of, without English Common Law there would be no safe trading, every wealthy Country in the World trades under English Common Law, even China recognised its value when the lease on Hong Kong ended, it’s why there was an explosion in Chinas economy, as for India, you could pick times out that should not have happened but also from what Indians done, 120 women and children were murdered in what is now Kanpur and thrown down a well, the facts about India are very much blurred because Governments do not want to acknowledge the truth, during the rule of India under the Empire there was often no more than 1 in a 1000 British soldiers for every Indian, it’s not really clear how even at its largest under the East India Company 250,000 men could rule over 169 million people unless its was consensual.
