It takes place in the same universe and during the same timeline as Fast and Furious but is now just following the adventures of Hobbs and Shaw who are two characters from the Fast and Furious series. Both Hobbs and Shaw were always trying to one up each other to show who's top dog which made for some pretty funny and memorable moments and that's why I believe Hollywood thought making a movie based off of their adventures would make for good screen time. Also this series over the years has gained a massive following and gained some super loyal fans and because of that regardless of all the hate it's received it's never failed and has always been a money maker. Hope that helps you understand what its connections to the Fast and Furious series are and why they are making it.
I think you guys could find some enjoyment from the F&F franchise. It's a lot and flip floppy but It's at least self aware of what it is... Ridiculous. 7 is my favorite and brought me to tears, fr. The director that did Aquaman did 7 and he's always good. We almost saw Idris Elba in 7 too...

the problem with this movie is that F&F fans will not forgive Shaw for killing a fan favorite character, Han, in F&F: Tokyo Drift. Tokyo Drift was the 3rd in the series but actually takes place after Furious 6. Actually about part way through Furious 7. they strangely turned Shaw into one of the good guys but it's just ridiculous since he still killed Han and fans won't forgive him for that ever. Hobbs is part of the last couple of F&F movies but the Rock and Vin Diesel didn't get along so you can tell they're scenes were never shot together. this is an attempt to give the Rock his own spinoff of the F&F films but with a partner in tow.
It's sad you guys are not familiar with the whole fast and furious franchise by the way if you people want to perfectly understand the relation between Hobbs and Shaw you guys should definitely check out Fast and Furious 7 and Furious 8...By the way nice reaction y'all 😉😉
