  • Sony pulled out all the stops and made what is arguably their current flagship lens, the 135 1.8 GM. But how does it hold up? Is it all hype, or is it the bokeh monster everyone's been hoping for? Let's find out!

    I guess I need to elaborate on my AF assessment. First of all: I had no issues with it at all. It was great! Excellent even! Just not “the very best”. That’s all. Just not a full 10/10, which you should know by now is very uncommon for me to award.
    It Would have been a 10/10 had it not been so common for other reviewers to say it’s the very best of any lens Sony makes, forcing me to compare it to the whole lineup. Otherwise I would have compared it just to prime portrait lenses and it would have won handily. But AF is a very broad subject, and incredibly variable depending on the situation.
    Additionally, I tested it on not just the a7Riv, but also on the a9 and the a7iii. I just used only image samples from the a7Riv.

      Which lens would you say is a 10/10? Not trying to troll, just wondering as a way to normalize your reviews and to give me a comparative baseline.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  3 роки тому +2

      It’s pretty much impossible to get a 10/10 in AF, because it seems that there are always trade offs of some kind.
      I gave the 35GM a 9.5. It’s much faster than the 135GM (almost apples to oranges, since it is much easier to accomplish at that focal length, though). It lost a half a point due to the excessive focus breathing unfortunately. Otherwise it would have been a 10. Silent and effortless.
      The 35 1.4 ZA was once ranked as a 10, but I have since lowered it to a 9. (I update my spreadsheet as time goes by and comparisons and standards change). It was one of the first Sony lenses with their direct drive motor, and compared to any other wide aperture lens it was bonkers good. No one had done near instant AF in a wide aperture lens like that before.
      But now that sort of thing is more common, and the 35 GM is even faster.

    The 135 GM f1.8 is my favorite lens so far. I use it particularly to create panoramic landscapes (with up to 8 vertical shots stitched together). So sharp with a great color rendition. As far as autofocus is concerned, I sometimes miss the focus on moving subjects, but I believe it’s because I haven’t found the best focus setting for the lens yet. It’s expensive, but worth every cent.

      I agree; I think that there must be a strong psychological compulsion to comply or at least connect one's views with those of other reviewers - yet Sony are masters of salesmanship and many reviewers are either ambassadors or very sweetened, so it becomes too convenient for them to praise uncritically. This is why analysis and journeys of perspective are more significant than conclusions.

    I'm glad you said what I was thinking. I don't like how clinical this lens is. Also the bokeh tends to cats eye A LOT. I know it's subjective but I want round soft bokeh. I own the 85 GM and it's my favourite lens, purely because it renders better backgrounds and circular bokeh throughout the frame. I think a lot of reviewers get caught up on "sharpness" being the most important thing. In reality it's like third or fourth on the list for me. Basically all modern professional lenses are sharp enough.

Even at iso 12,800 1/1000th it would find faces in basketball, and had no issues staying locked onto fast moving hockey players as they swung by me (I usually sit in the penalty box for a period or two)

    I love this lens for sports action photography. My 70-200 GM has been resting while I use this lens exclusively for mtb and motocross. 85 GM fails due to AF. I will add the Sony 85 f1.8 for when I get too tight on shots. f1.8 is much better than f2.8 for my work. I tried f1.4 with GM but just too shallow a depth of field for my liking with sports. My photo sales have gone up considerably since using it over the 70-200. Character value for me is 10.

    I agree with most you said. And yes, as opposed to most people say, this is not the sharpest Sony lens, by exemple my 35mm GM is sharper wide open.
    However I think the 135mm GM has a lot of "POP" (if POP refers to the ability of the lens to make the subject stands out, like if it was cut and pasted to a background).
    I use the 135mm GM and the 85mm GM since a very long time and to my eyes, the 135mm GM has much more POP. Mainly because the lens is sharper wide open and the OOF are not as smooth as the 85mm GM.
    Also, the 85mm GM, again to my eyes, has much nicer colors and tones, nicer bokeh, more sense of volume and more delicate local contrast. The 135mm GM is sharper, especially wide open, has faster AF, higher contrast and almost zero CA.
    In my opinion, the 135mm GM is a boring lens, it's an almost perfect lens for test charts with almost zero character. The 85mm GM on the other hand is a magical lens.
    However, lenses like the 85 and 135mm batis have better local contrast and colors.

    About the AF, did you use the A7R IV instead of the A9? People who claim it's a sport lens are using the A9 with it.
    For example, the 200-600 doesn't work well with the A7R IV at all, but works great with the A9.
    Just wondering if you've also used the A9, because I think that whenever you test AF, you should eliminate any potential bottleneck, so, use the fastest camera available, and same for testing IQ, the camera with the highest resolution should be used.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I did try it on the a9, and although it was of course a bit better, it still wasn’t “the best”. Just of the lenses I’ve used, I would put the 55 1.8, 35 1.4, 70-200GM, and 16-35GM above it for AF responsiveness.

    Useful and interesting review. It sounds like 135mm is too graphically-rendered for your taste - probably the slight volume that 85mm still has left helps lift the subject how you like it. Roger Ciccala had some interesting notes about this lens and the Sigma relating to how different lenses change sharpness according to the resolution/frequency of the camera - as I recall, he found that the Sigma was better suited to higher frequencies and resolution. I just watched an amazing seminar with Leica's lead optical designer on the Leica Singapore channel, which you may wish to check out.

    Superb review and comparisons, thank you. For rendering beauty, check out the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF FE. Gorgeous, IMHO. As for the 135mm, well that focal length does have more compression (more "flat") than the 85mm. Oh yeah, be sure to check out the new Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8. I'm getting gorgeous images with it, and the background is almost always creamy and awesome, but not always; sometimes a bit rocky though, still have to figure that one out.

      And yeah, I’m a bit on the fence with the background rendering. The bokeh is unexpectedly busy at times, but super creamy at other times. The copy I have, at least, has some really ugly bokeh balls when you look super close. But so do the 55 and 35 Sony/Zeiss lenses and no one ever cares. Haha.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  4 роки тому

      They’re both very clinical in their rendering, and similarly excellent in optical performance. I find I prefer the look of the 105, though. It’s a bit more distinctive. That’s a subjective opinion, though.
      The 105 is a much more unwieldy lens, very front heavy by comparison to the 135GM. Where you would have the greatest gains with the GM is in AF. The Sigma just can’t touch it. Most other portrait lenses can’t. It’s a shame I was forced to compare the AF to sports lenses (due to the dozens of people who insisted it should be one), as otherwise it would have been a 10.

    This is a solid and balanced review. I eagerly anticipated the release of this lens and was hoping it would retain the character of the Sony A mount 135mm (what I still believe is the best 135mm ever made). I was disappointed by the severely clinical and modern look of the new lens. I now keep an adapted canon 135L for my 135 needs. Sure the Canon is long in the tooth, not nearly as sharp, vignettes like crazy and has quite a bit of chromatic aberration; but it's portrait lens and perfection is far from necessary, what is more important is that it have a beautiful and engaging imaging to its character rather than come across as a very well spec'd engineering product.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  4 роки тому

      The million dollar question is (or is it the $3000 question?) , can you have a “modern lens” with great image quality and still have amazing character as well?
      The 85 GM comes the closest for me. But it’s still a bit dry. Then there’s the 55 1.8, which is essentially the classic lens perfected. Very sloppy rendering, exceeding sharp, great character. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@WesPerry Funny enough, the lens that does it for me is the Sigma 105 (assuming you can get past the ridiculous size). It's too sharp and too contrasty (both issues can be solved in post) but rendering is so beautifully done. That said, it could simply be that I just really like how 105mm renders rather than anything Sigma did.

    Autofokus is different on the A7r IV compared to the A9 - and the 135mm is a sports lens compared to any other normal focal length lens. On my A7r IV the Auto-Focus is really not that good. But this is due to the camera as the 135mm shines on the A9.
