Avocados have their own world, they are one of my favorite. We are growing a reed [2 year old so far] besides 8 citrus trees in our backyard. We love it!

It's a shame that stores only carry Hass. But to answer your question, I grow many varieties in my yard and my friends grow even more varieties and share with me.

The Bacon was named not for its flavor but for James Bacon who originally cultivated this popular avocado in California in 1954. What if an avocado were called "Big Seed and Kind of Watery"? I don't mind the fibers in avocados. What I don't appreciate are the massive zones of gray flesh in supermarket avocados from overseas on sale!

It's real buttering. delicious. I have 2 avocado plants. They both taste the same, but the smaller one avocado is very resistant. the avocado and I would love to do something like that. Great video
I was wondering where to get some of the less common varieties like Janice Boyce and Helen online. I am in the central valley of California. I really like this channel.
We have an avocado tree in our backyard and I don't know which variety is it. Our neighbor's avocado tree is different from ours, theirs is a lot smaller and elongated the fruit size varies.
I have a tree that gives two varieties. One is large, round and green with high water and sweet tasting. The other seems like a hybrid of the first with Hass. It has thin skin, small seed, dark green skin, nutty and sweet. I wonder what type it is.
Hi Greg, I live in Montebello, Southern California. I was considering purchasing from Florida a Simmonds and a Choquette. Do you have any experience with these types? Thanks.
Wow. Amazing avocado. I bought a so big avocado in america. It is totally a green.and smooth ball -- nearly as big as a football. It is so big thus me, my parents and my uncle try our best to eat it in a meal but we failed. After i return to my country i can't find such a big and round avocado in any market in my country. I watch your video and learn so much. So, is the big green ball-shape avocado we bought in america a kind of "florida avocado"? We bought this big avocado from a small market beside a farm in America. It may come from America farm and is not a mexico avocado.
I live in a cold country where we can only get imported avocados and they're often really bland. I've only seen 2 varieties here, I'll see if I can get another type.
Hi Greg , love the info! Looking for your advice. I live in inland oceanside, vista border. I’m looking to eat avocados all year round with my family. I am looking to add either a holiday or a jan Boyce to my collection. I have fuerte, reed, gem, Sharwill, lamb, and a Carmen Hass. All mostly young trees. We are all about trying to get the best tasting fruits, but again looking to harvest year round. We thought adding the jan Boyce was best BUT I see your harvest chart indicates the holiday may be best because of its harvest season. Your thought? I only have room for 1 more tree in the ground but lots of room for a container tree, I just feel ground planting is better.
Hi Rich, Thanks! You'll have the year pretty well covered by those varieties, especially if you get an off-bloom on your Carmen. I wouldn't bother adding Holiday. Check out this post I wrote about varieties for a year-round avocado harvest: gregalder.com/yardposts/avocado-varieties-for-year-round-harvest/
Although i love Hass and Mexican avocados, I also love carribbean avocados. I'm half puerto rican and dominican so I grew up eating those really big green avocados. They have a bit of a sweet taste to them compared to the creamy Mexican avocado.
if I saw this before I got my Hass I'd have gone looking for a sharwill to grow, love the yellow creamy flesh good size to seed ratio and definitely a fan of scooping and a nice oily nutty more dense flesh. Going to look up and see about getting me one, maybe I'll grow it in a container. Thanks Greg.
It's also a type B, if it grows well in a container then I'm definitely going to get one. I found a nursery in Fallbrook that regularly sells them, woohoo always looking for a reason to get another tree :D
Hi Greg, what is your thoughts on the most cold hardy tastey Avocado variety? Where i am located i can get as low as 20F or -5Degrees for a few weeks in winter. I have read that the Bacon is frost tolerant but i would prefer something more nuttier tasting like the Hass, cheers.
If you live in zone 9 it shouldn’t be a problem to grow any avocado variety. Just protect them for the first few years and plant in the proper microclimate
Hi Wilson, I wish I did but Maluma is not yet available in California except to a few select commercial farmers. Looking forward to trying it out though.
Hey Greg, I was Home Depot today and was looking at their fruit trees. They had Jan Boyce avocado trees from La Verne Nursery. Who would of thought they would have such a hard to find avocado tree variety for sale.
The big ones from Peru are the best i`ve tasted. They are $3 each now here in Norway so not too much guacamole love on this chap even though it`s the food of gods.
@@gregalderdotcom Well i have no idea about the brand names. All the shops usually just call them out by their country of origin and nothing more. There`s usually two or three types to choose from. I have seen some from Kenya once but the ones from Peru are found most places and are much better than the smaller mexican ones but rather expensive since they never are sold by the pound but rather individually. Just think of a big apple or big pear. What i can say is the prices seem to go up and down a little bit but rarely on sale. I would usually buy four or five if making guacamole and`s that`s a lot of money to spend. The peruvian ones are usually ripe or close to when they hit the shops so could help explain the price and taste. Hi Sandra,
I love Reeds too! Maybe I'll do a summer video comparing some late varieties so I can include Reed.
Small avocado are hybrids of the West Indies or west African taste better..
Like purple skin
I prefer hass
Hasssssss.
And hass varieties exist more than one, hass carmen, hass Méndez more small and round and new hass tres Marías more in pear shape all those 3 plus regular hass are certified only for USDA to enter United States
Hi Jesus. True. There are lots of mutations of Hass. It's an old variety that has been grown around the world so it has had lots of opportunities to make natural mutations. The one you call Tres Marias, is that the same as the one also called Flor de Maria or Alvarez?
@@gregalderdotcom actually I did a mistake, the real name is Flor de María,
Thank you Greg for ask and I could correct my mistake
Oh, thanks. I've only heard of Flor de Maria. I've never actually seen the trees or fruit. They're more pear shaped? I hear the trees are also more productive.
@@gregalderdotcom no actually is more rounded shaped than regular hass, it flowers earlier and it's season is larger than hass also is less erratic than hass or el fuerte (yielding more uniform yearly) el fuerte is one year good yield and next year not so
Thank you, Jesus!
