I used to review and write sales copy for books about the entertainment world-for fifteen years.
I read Sherwood Schwartz’s autobiography and he said he went to the executives and said, it’s a *microcosm.*
They looked at each other and said, “what??”
He explained that each person represented a different part of society and all they had in common was that they were on vacation!
It’s a fun read, if you’re crazy about this stuff like we all are.
Thanks for sharing! I need to track down that book.
I believe that if you help to create a project, you should get some kind of credit for it. I remember this show from pre-school. I always thought the professor was handsome but for me I found Ginger and especially the Howell's to be the funniest, and sometimes call it "Howells Island"!
Thanks for sharing, Heather!
It all depends on the contract involved. For example, if you work for Disney/Marvel and come up with a new superhero, the company has the rights to that character, not you, unless there is some contract stating otherwise. It's a strange world in Hollywood law.
I own the set. I've watched the entire show more times than I can count while growing up and I still laugh myself silly. I've seen the pilot and yes, the recasting was BADLY needed...especially Ginger. I wish we still had clean, silly, slapstick TV like this. Truly timeless. Anyone who contributed should rightly get credit.
Totally agree!

@@jdsundstrom I saw the Gilligan's island pilot it was ok and many scenes of the pilot were used in the first episode of the show.....when Skipper wakes up on the minnow you can see the actors from the pilot in the background as well as the intro and I agree the song for the pilot was terrible....it was a Clypso song.... they had to redo scenes from the pilot for the first episode with Tina , Dawn and Russell. the whole first episode was redone from the pilot. during the first season intro with the song we all know and love as you see the Minnow leave...you see the actors from the pilot who got replaced on the boat
I heard Schwartz say in an interview that he got the idea by reading an article on the ideal society: a leader, a blue collar worker, the educated, a farmer, and an entertainer, a socialite, and a financer.
He said Brady Bunch was based on another article about blended families, so the story seems plausible.
I think that I mentioned that a Stock-Broker Friend (worked in Manhattan/World Trade Center) of mine had Burt Ward as a Client. That being said, ANOTHER Friend (worked in Syosset/Long Island) of mine had Sherwood Schwartz's SON Lloyd Schwartz as a Client. Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 😀

I remember reading an article in G-Fan magazine (a fanzine for lovers of Godzilla and other giant monsters, sci-fi and fantasy). The Toho Company film Matango(U.S. title The Attack Of The Mushroom People) was released in 1963. The story was about a boat that is shipwrecked on a mysterious island. The characters numbered seven. Things go from bad to worse for the castaways. Gilligan’s Island aired in 1964. G-Fan compared the castaways from Gilligan’s Island to the castaways in Matango. Coincidentally, they almost matched except for the fact that Matango was a sci-fi horror film and Gilligan’s Island was a sitcom. They interviewed someone who was allegedly saw Sherwood Schwartz attending a viewing of Matango. I remember thinking maybe Schwartz saw the film and was inspired to write Gilligan’s Island but leave out the sci-fi and horror elements. Sometimes I wondered what it would have been like if the show was a horror show. It would probably be like Lost In Space or Lost. But, thankfully, it didn’t go that route because Gilligan’s Island was about a group of people from different backgrounds living and surviving on an uncharted island and they only have each other.
Elroy Schwartz was probably the best ghostwriter around.
Sad to see the overlay image of Florence, Sherwood and Dawn now that they're all no longer with us!
It is super sad!
If they both came up with the original premise together then I'd say yes, Sherwood's brother does deserve credit.
Sherwood came up with the premise by himself, wrote the "bible" for the show and sold it to CBS. He then asked his brother, and his brother's writing partner, to write the pilot with him.
Had a crush on Ginger when I was a kid. As an adult I'm partial to Dawn Wells and her character Mary Ann.
Great Stuff Dave! & Yes... I remember 'Dusty's Trail' from when I was a kid! But for years I thought I imagined it!
Three video subjects i will always click on are Batman, Star Trek and Gilligan's Island. Whoever the real creator is they created a genius of a comedy. Gilligan's Island is one of my absolute favorite shows of all time and i used to watch it after school when i was growing up and have seen every episode at least 50 times. Pilots usually are rewritten or retooled-Lost In Space and Star Trek for example. Glad you mentioned Bill Finger who is finally getting his recognition as co-creator after all these decades. Bob Kane couldn't even really draw-he traced almost everything he did and 'altered' it to his whims. I remember Dusty's Trail and it was just a western clone of Gilligan's Island and even featured a millionaire and his wife!! [And i believe the pilot is right here on UA-cam!] Tina Louise always said she hated Gilligan's Island for ruining her career, although her and Dawn Wells became long lasting friends. Anyway, i've rambled on long enough-thanks again Dave for the memory stroll and keep the good stuff coming.
Thank you for this exciting video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
interesting to know. I had heard through a co worker about the lost pilot episode and I think I watched the theme on youtube and it was different for sure. I obvious grew up watching GI but liked popular theme we all know and sang ha . thanks for sharking and happy holidays to u! (I am watching the series Lost now and its pretty good so far-its a more modern day series than GI)
Thanks for sharing!
good evening dave. merry christmas.

Hi trivia champion. Merry Christmas to you and your family. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@harperstacey9604 Likewise Ms. Harper Stacey. 🎅🎄🎁☃❤
Happy holidays to you as well!
The Gilligan's Island pilot is here on UA-cam.
Easy to find...
Lots of pilots get reworked. Cast, theme song, etc... Recasting is particularly brutal as it's rare to see the replaced cast members get another chance somewhere else. You can find the original pilot of The Big Bang Theory and the two female cast members that were replaced. Even when they do lock the cast, it often takes a year before a show "finds" itself.
Dawn Wells/Mary Ann for the win- yes, I watched a lot of Gilligan's Island reruns in the 70's.
Thanks for sharing Sean!
Titles by Peter Max!" Mst3k joke 🤣
I saw the show where they almost got off the island. ROFL!
😅🤣😃
Super information.🎉🎉 keep up the great work
Thank you! Will do!
Wow great info Dave!🏝🥥🛥📺
Thanks 👍
Things I never knew! Great entertainment! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The way I see it creators are a lot like authors, and, a lot of times fiction authors get their ideas from other sources, often basing characters on people they know, so I'm not surprised that Gilligan's Island has more than one creator.
Even Star Trek has more than one creator, though Gene Roddenberry probably wouldn't admit it.
A lot of his characters have traits that are actually suggested by the actors who played them.
I have the entire show and also have the movie rescue from Gillian’s island. Wish I could find all the other movies. I also have both cartoons of Gillian’s Island
@thomasbracken1969 How about the soundtrack from Rescue From Gilligans Island? Believe it or not it does exist... at least on CDR format and ditto for the other two Gilligan's Island movies! I saw them on Ebay. 🏝🥥🛥🚣
@@SuperMarioBrosIII thank you very much. I’m gonna look on there now.
i just saw the original pilot dave. could you make a video about the actresses who played ginger and bunny?
Great suggestion! I'll add it to my potential topics list.
Dear Dave, Knowing what wealth is depends on what type of child you speak. To read and know parables and where they are used could be considered a clue. When everyone's time comes the money of this world will be worthless. Love, those we love us and the ones we love will always be priceless.
I thought you were going to surprise me by saying that Bill Finger helped create it!
That would have been a huge surprise!
Yes Elroy deserves credit...for helping create a good show... one thing that I find annoying is years later you hear of a actor or actress who had issues on a movie or TV and didn't want to be there.........the question then becomes why did they bother to audition in the first place...........Tina Louse had issues , Robert Reed had issues on the Brady Bunch and so on.....or writers feel they didn't get the credit they should have for a TV show or movie...............I'm a big fan of Horror Franchise "Friday the 13th" for a long time the franchise has been on hold in the courts..do to a Writer from the First movie feels he didn't get the credit for creating the character Jason Vorhess and other things about it....
27th...hey Dave......I like the stories revolving the casting of this show......especially of the Skipper Alan Hale
Thanks for sharing!
know what is important and what is not.
Hey, if you really want to bug Pat McCormack on your next Live Stream record that pilot Gilligains Island Jamaican Giligan's theme. I'll even join you and pitch in a $20 just to bug Pat. I love Pat, I actually cherish Pat buuut....I also love to bug Him. It's so fun. 😜😁
Anyway, very interesting. I didn't know about the creative controversy between Sherwood and his brother. It's really funny when you mentioned it, I also thought of Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Again I thought of Stan Lee and comic book artist Jack Kirby. Who truly created the Marvel Universe. Stan and what he called his Marvel Way of telling a story has been a question of controversy for some time, but that's another story.
Although, I understand Sherwood had tons of plotlines even when the GIlligan's Island was cancelled.
Thank you so much Dave this was so interesting.
Who knows? Pat might like it!

I love Gilligans island and I didn’t like how you said it got canceled that was terrible cancel Gilligans island because the producers wife like a different job better that’s hogwash that’s still never been done that wasn’t fair to keep the show it has the best rigs now it’s which one you like best but I love Gilligans island in the assets in the Brady Bunch I also love the Brady Bunch
Does he deserve credit?
That’s a tough call because the pilot was not great and it was changed to the show we all know and love.
Yep. Totally agree. Much of what Elroy helped create was jettisoned. Still, it's hard to know what Elroy might have helped create that was kept.
The real question is who created Mary Ann?! 😮😊
Ha! That is the MOST IMPORTANT question! 🙂
@@jdsundstrom lol, Merry Christmas buddy!
Elroy schwartz
And who really cares, since it's far too late to hold them responsible? LMFAO
I know it's ancient history...but I still find stuff like this interesting. 🙂
@@jdsundstrom You know I'm only teasing you, my dear friend. I'm so glad you do, because I do also.

Merry Christmas to you as well, my friend!
Avalanche movie from 1978 is a terrible movie love Gillian’s island great siticom👍
Pilots tend to differ drastically from the shows they end up spawning. I can name at least 10 that had actors who were replaced by other actors before the show was picked up and aired by its respective network. Lost In Space and Three's Company come to mind.
Agreed. I think "Three's Company" had 2 or 3 pilots before it actually made it on the air.
The original pilot for All in the Family, which is on UA-cam is truly awful. Carrol O'Connor and Jean Stapleton are playing off two actors (Mike and Gloria) who were true duds. You could literally see the difference in quality. Thankfully and obviously they recast, otherwise the show wouldn't have lasted a single season.
Thank you for more of the GOOD STUFF, Dave!
I do remember Dusty's Trail. That show was like Gilligan's Island in the West.
Dusty's trail was a rip-off of Gilligan's island and the show was unfunny. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Don't forget about " Far Out Space Nuts " with Bob Denver and Chuck McCann !!!
Mel Street (the late country singer) performed the theme to Dusty's Trail during the main titles.
Thanks for sharing, Pryce!
I was always Ginger over Mary Ann but at 88 I'm gonna pass and let someone else have her. ⛵
BTW The Professor lived to be 89 and Mrs. Howell lived to be 90 so Ginger hasn't beat them yet as the Oldest Castaway.
I'm hoping Tina beats Lovey Howell's record.
@@jdsundstrom Also the theme song from Gilligans Isle seems to forshadow or at least mirrow the fact that in season 1 Tina Louise is credited last and is currently the only living survivor from the original series. Not to mention Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells which were credited last in seasons two and three died right after each other albeit years apart. Have you ever thought about that Dave?! 🤔🏝🥥🛥
Raw bacon, I enjoy your comments. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
@@jdsundstrom Tina Louise is in excellent health. I hope she will make to 100 years of age. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
I think Elroy was a conniving little brother.
That's possible!
🤔Well , Dave I do believe credit should be given to those who helped create a direction of a project. Sherwood may have come up with the idea , one that he may have over heard in a conversation at a restaurant or elsewhere. As with many inspirations some originate through other minds. A couple of people , maybe friends , at a restaurant might have been talking about current TV shows and during their discussion the idea of putting certain character types on a desert island might have half jokingly been suggested by one of the friends. Sherwood overhears the idea and then plans out a production based on that conversations imagination. Elroy is chosen to co write the script so his ideas are presented and like any idea would eventually be improved upon once its been tested. It's like Stan Lee for many years claiming sole credit for Marvel characters and remaining silent on the contributions of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko ; who being comic veterans were exposed to many creative plotters during their tenure at other companies. Elroy may have given Sherwood suggestions that finally became the series we all know.

I love the $6 million man but I also love the Bionic woman best but I love the six Million Man to
Maryann was so much hotter than Ginger!
Since Gilligan's Island was one of the most profitable series in US history, there was more than a billion dollars at stake, and even more since only Dawn Wells contractually got residuals. Hopefully the brother was 'paid off' with a reasonable sum (in the millions).
Dawn Wells swore that she didn't receive any residuals from the show. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
The last episode should’ve been them getting rescued but leaving Gillian’s dumb ass behind after him screwing up prior rescue attempts. For the record, Mary Ann was hotter than Ginger.
@patrickforrest4899 True however CBS pulled the plug on the show at the 11th hour! Originally the series was on the schedule for season 4 but the chief executive of CBS didn't see Gunsmoke on the lineup and wanted Gunsmoke so Gilligan's Island was cancelled!📺🏝🥥🛥
Dave you touched a raw nerve on this one ! I hate and despise those greedy , jealous , glory hog revisionist historians ! Sherwood Schwartz imagined ,created and inspired Gilligan's Island ! his brother might have tweeked and refined the original concept ,but he didn't come up with the original idea ! Same with Bob Kane and Bill finger!
If say ; I invented the car , then someone adds a steering wheel and a coat of paint ,did they invent the car?
I appreciate your perspective, J. Robert!
I couldn't love the show any more than I do. No religion or politics, that's what made it fun and timeless in my opinion. Im not sure what to think about this Elroy thing but it has always bothered me a little bit that Sherwood never shared any of the residual money with any of the actors and how much money Sherwood made is always shrouded in secrecy and myth. It had to be many many many millions. PS. It still bums me out that Tina did not do the rescue movie. I think if we could read her mind it is one of he bigger life regrets. Wouldn't we all do something different if we could go back in time? Thanks for all you do Dave. I really do enjoy your channel.
Thanks for the great comments. I was disappointed that Tina didn't do the movies as well.
Don't forget about " Far Out Space Nuts " with Bob Denver and Chuck McCann !! Funny Show !!! It's Gilligan & The Skipper all over again. I wonder if they ever asked Alan Hale to do it with Bob Denver ???
No. He was not co-creator
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jason!
I think I would give Sherwood the credit for creating Gilligan's Island since his brother and Kalish wrote the script for the pilot but I don't think they had the original idea. And also because it was only a series with what could be termed the "classic" lineup. Perhaps too then people who mattered saw Sherwood as the one who brings the shows to them. As far as Jerry Mathers I was still pretty young when he "died" and it was really a few years before I found out he wasn't dead. I often wonder how long it took for people to know that the United States was a country. There weren't telegraphs yet then. Even in 68 things didn't get around like now so he was probably "dead" a few years before I found out he wasn't. And I heard about Ken Osmond as Alice Cooper but Alice is older than him I think. Eddie Haskell could make himself up to look like Alice Cooper's brother, I could buy that. Hey now I am trying to think who that was as the host in that reunion interview. He looks familiar but his name escapes me? Actually I watched two videos in a row so I am commenting on both.
