NASA National Championship AIX Race Recap - Utah Motorsports Campus UMC 2024

► Ambient temperature 90 degrees. Check.
► Track temperature 150 degrees. Check.
► Supercharged engines making tons of heat. Check.
► Automatic transmissions making even more heat. Check.
The race strategy was easy to determine. This was going to be a test of which driver can keep his drivetrain temperatures under control. The number 24 GT500 Mustang driven by Derric Carter (810 wheel horsepower) took the lead on lap 1, ran a blistering 2:01 on lap number 2, and built a substantial lead over the other AIX competitors. “Derric had the fastest car all weekend, so I wasn’t surprised to see him get out to a big lead,” said Cal Lemp, driver of the #3 MAP Data Systems GT500 Mustang (720 wheel horsepower).
Nick Plocienik in the number 41 Camaro was the first AIX driver to experience overheating issues after about five laps and had to reduce his speeds to finish the race. Carter also started to experience overheating problems on lap 5 and had to dial back his times to the 2:08 - 2:09 range.
Meanwhile, Lemp settled in running the first eight laps in the 2:05 - 2:07 range, gradually closing the gap that Carter had built. Lemp caught Carter’s rear bumper at the end of lap 8. Carter and Lemp drove nose to tail throughout lap 9 until Lemp made the pass in a very unlikely place, in turn 14 (Windup). “Derric had about 100 horsepower more than us, so I knew my only chance to pass him would be in a slow corner,” Lemp said. “Thankfully, Derric gave enough room to keep the cars from contacting each other and I was able to get the left wheels to stick despite having my right wheels in the gravel.”
With some clear track, Lemp started to pull away from Carter running his fastest lap of the race in lap 11, a 2:03. However, Lemp’s dashboard started to flash temperature warnings on lap 13 and the car’s engine control system started to engage by decreasing the timing advance. “That made driving the car very difficult because I had full power on some parts of the track, and I had reduced power on other parts of the track. It was very inconsistent for a couple of laps,” said Lemp.
A two-car spin coming out of turn 15 (Release) gave the AIX lead back to Carter. “Coming out of turn 14, you are on full throttle for two seconds before you start the turn-in for turn 15. Those two seconds of throttle at reduced power caused me to turn in too soon and I ran out of track on the exit and got into the gravel and spun. Driver error,” said Lemp.
Another problem began to emerge for Lemp in turn 1 of lap 15. The mustang started sputtering in hard turns as if it was running out of gas. Nonetheless, Lemp was able to catch Carter’s bumper at the start of lap 17. “A one lap shoot-out with Derric for the AIX championship would have been fun, but we were definitely out of fuel at that point, and I had to try to get the car across the finish line one more time to preserve our second-place finish,” Lemp said.
