i'm going to be honest, having a video like this with the beautiful melody/music in the background really helps takes some of the anxiety away about being tested on skills and and turn it into "i can do this" and i can only thank you so much for giving me that along with these informational videos

He’s probably shaking because you have to press pretty hard on those mannequins to occlude the veins enough to prevent leaking.
Maybe he just has a tremor

If you don't remove the tourniquet before you remove the catheter to connect the tubing, you are going to have blood everywhere. I know from experience.

I would recommend that you slam 20 cc NS to be sure you have a patent IV so you DONT INFILTRATE the D50 and cause necrosis...
Or giving 10 cc NS at normal rate and a slow D50 push with another flush halfway through administration works just fine too.
Yeah I was wondering why they weren't flushing the d50 as they pushed it.
To ensure proper patent IV would you flush the catheter hub prior to connecting the IV line?
I’ve been a paramedic now since 1998 & we can do quite a bit more than an advanced emt but not too much more. We actually both do the same things it’s just that when it comes down to intubation the AEMT has doesn’t have as much authority in it. Meaning they have to get permission & supervision from the paramedic first before they perform that procedure!
Were not taught intubation in aemt class. It's not a skill we obtain. We drop kings, I gells and combitubes

how did you know you IV line was patent? If D50 is not completely in the vein then necrosis can occur.

At Fort Sam Houston for 68w training were taught to take the TQ off before occluding the vein.
First off, thank you for your service!! You're receiving excellent education there, so do as your instructors have taught. Our video is showing how to pass the NREMT skill exam and it may differ slightly from how you learned it, which is OK! Remember, on test day, be sure to ask your proctor any questions before starting the test to ensure you are aware of any oddities during the test they'll be looking for. Be sure to let us know how it goes, you'll do great!!
EMTprep I have already passed skills. But thank you! I understand it doesn't make that much of a difference. That's just how we were taught. The rational was to let the blood continue to flow back into the system so it wouldn't flow out as much in the case of not occluding as efficiently as possible. Which is commonly the case in a combat situation.

Speaking from experience, in the field, definitely remove the TQ before occluding. If it isn’t a self occluding cath it gets…messy
I was taught, once you see flash, you release the tourniquet & hold tamp.

Is it important to verbalize every step in this process? Example: He's clearly filling the drip chamber. Will an examiner dock a mark for not verbalizing that he did it?
Hey Brad, they shouldn't but its hard to say for sure. If you can, verbalize each step as you walk through it so you leave no doubt for the proctor.
Brad, mine did. Always good to cover your bases in a testing environment.
The way my professor put it is, you’d rather verbalize just in case they didn’t see you do it. He said he would hate for someone to have to retest because the proctor didn’t see you perform a step. If you verbalize it it just covers your bases
As someone considering getting my AEMT, what is your reasoning behind doing it instead of or before paramedic?
Honestly, it depends on a lot of factors. If your ultimate goal is to become a Paramedic AND your state allows you to go from EMT to Paramedic, then we wouldn't recommend AEMT. If you have the time and money to take the class and want to educate yourself on a deeper level prior to starting Paramedic school, then by all means, go for it! Nationally, Paramedics get paid more than AEMT's so compensation is another big reason to make the leap.
I actually took an accelerated paramedic program when I went through it and completed it in just under a year. My advice is have a couple years working as an EMT basic (paramount for mastery at the paramedic level), then go for your medic certificate. Ultimately you’ll be more educated, more employable, and get better pay.
More ALS Experience without all the responsibility of a paramedic. You still have to be responsible at any level yet paramedics are expected to lead.

EMTprep In our protocol it's to check for inaccurate placement. If you feel the cold around the site it means that the flush may have missed it's target or blown through the vein. Maybe a bit tedious but, it's our protocol.

let me ask what can an advanced EMT do versus a paramedic can they do the same thing or not
Hey Raymond, in general, the Paramedic has a larger scope of practice. This means they can push more medications and perform ALS procedures that the AEMT cannot. Nationwide, Paramedics are also paid more due to the longer amount of time spent in school and the larger scope of practice.
In ohio pretty much the only difference is cardiac drugs, cricothyroidotomy, pacing and cardioverting are the only differences.
Not much difference I’m an intermediate or “advanced” and in Texas with my particular ambulance company my scope is dead on with a paramedic. Advanced can carry narcs,intubate,ekg interpretation with acls/pals of course, pushing cardiac drugs also. Depends where u are and the protocols with who you work for. They make 2 doll hairs more than I do. So not to much difference in pay nor scope.

Practical check off for NREMT B, AEMT and paramedic are sphincter closing event's. Check offs are always exceedingly stringent compared to how its done in the field.
Forgot to say push fist 10 first of d50 then the other 10 or 15 to compmete the 25 you dont want to push all of it at once even at slow rate

Even though that is prudent, it's not on the skills checklist, so he doesn't have to do it. I had one instructor who would ding people for "adding" things.
