Due to funding cutbacks in the UK postal service the Falcon is now unfortunately delivered by pigeon, which lacks a certain degree of glamour.

My preferred pipe in winter, truly amazing combined with a meerschaum bowl! ❤

Nice review...but I would have liked some more falcon sounds just to make the point clear...otherwise some ppl might mistake it for a squirrel pipe.

I just purchased a bent Falcon estate pipe this week after seeing a video by my good friend Peddling Piper. I acquired one earlier this year and sold it, as the chrome finish was separating from the metal and it just looked funky. But I'm excited to get it this week. This was helpful; never knew about the moisture absorbing ring, or that a normal pipe cleaner works just fine. I paid extra for the raptor feathers with which I was told it had to be cleaned.

Saw someone smoking one of these the other day; I've always been tempted by falcons, but never made the plunge. It is also a very cheap way to get a Meershcaum lined or even full Meerschaum pipe bowl without having to buy a proper Meerschaum.

A falcon pipe was the first "real" pipe I ever bought - I had only had basket pipes and cobs before then. They are great pipes and with the variety of bowl shapes you are bound to find one that you like. If you want a larger bowl then look for the "classic" range of bowls like the Snifter and Hyerbole.
I primarily smoke outdoors and find that other pipes will overheat, but the radiator effect on the falcon works well in conjunction with a wind cap and keeps the smoke very cool. I doubt you'll notice much difference smoking indoors. As for moisture buildup I find a quick flick of the wrist and a blow through the stem is enough to dislodge any moisture before putting the bowl back on mid smoke.
I use a falcon "extra" stem which is anodised and I don't find any metallic taste at all, maybe because the anodising is on the inside as well as out. I've not used the regular metal stems for a while so can't comment if I tasted anything in those.
A quick note on the stem and pipe cleaners though. First, the reason thin pipe cleaners are recommended is that larger cleaners have been known to split the stem along the seam. I find normal pipe cleaners to be ok but any extra fluffy cleaners that give any kind of resistance when you're inserting should be avoided (and yes, falcon's pipe cleaners are quite expensive and there are numerous other thin options out there). Second, you shouldn't actually be able to remove the mouthpiece and stem and falcon states you shouldn't try to!
I think these are great pipes for beginners and also a necessary part of any piper's collection!

Very nice review, I can add that you can clean the stem by simply putting it under a Fawcett! Simple and very easy, they are small but smoke very well. Please give and update when your pipe is more "broken in" and also when you get more Falcon Bowls.

I have 3 old Falcons of the original shapes and they are brilliant for my St Bruno, Walnut(now named Original) flake and Condor tobaccos.I have had them all for 30 plus years and you would think to look at them they were brand new.A few tons of baccy have been drawn through these boys(or girls)got to be careful with the "sisterhood" nowadays, and they were the working mans pipe here in Britain, and fantastic smokers, indoor or out.No need for little pipe rings or special pipe cleaners.Jim.Liverpool.

I like my Falcons. The only drawback for me is that when you are smoking them in front of people who are not used to pipe smoking (which is most people nowadays) they think I am smoking some weed...

Glad you reviewed this. I recently got an International from Amazon.com ($31.99 w/o the bowl). One thing you forgot to mention is that the International takes a 6mm filter. It will take the balsa or paper Medico types if you opt to use one. I put a softie bit on the International because the plastic stem is a bit uncomfortable on the corners of the mouth. It handles aromatics pretty well, especially with the meerschaum-lined bowl. Cheers and Happy New Year.

  • @bikkies
    @bikkies 4 роки тому +4

I have a few Falcons. I also taste a slight metallic hint to the smoke but I use these for aromatics and stronger tasting tobaccos. I dedicate one bowl just to Ennerdale as that ghosts terribly. As you point out, the ease with which you can swap out the bowls makes this a non issue for me. I still mostly smoke briars when it's a known and trusted blend, or corncobs when trying out something new. However it's nice to have the Falcons sat there on standby.

One thing that occurs to me is that this makes a good travelling pipe. If one stores the bowls together and the stems bundled together, it's possible to carry several variations of pipes in the same space it would take to carry two. Perhaps a good camping pipe?

Falcon do make larger bowls there called “Hyperboles” roughly twice the size and available in both plain briar and meerschaum lined briar,Falcon pipes are fantastic! Easy to clean cheap enough to have a few bowls in hand to alternate for different blends overheating etc, interesting to know also Falcon although still manufactured in UK is now owned by an Australian firm, great review! Thankyou

Hi Bradley, I'm pretty happy with my Falcons. The bowls are a bit small making for a shorter smoke but they make nice knock about pipe.

At the price you mention, I could see this as a good alternative when you don't want risking breaking a shank, like when you're working outside. Same for travelling, since you don't have to let the pipe rest and can just switch bowls.

puppetshow360 yes I bought the international type which has a black stem which gives the impression that it looks more like a full brier type pipe , but they are a nice pipe and the beauty of them is the different types of Bowles give you a greater choice of style on a cheaper cost , instead of having to purchase a complete pipe which can be costly depending on what your requirements are , so Happy pipe smoking .

I really enjoy your videos. The format of your reviews, particularly the tobacco reviews, is the best I’ve seen on UA-cam. Recently I decided to try Elizabethan Mixture since you seem to love it so much. That might not of been a good idea because I’m hooked! Now I’m hoping you can suggest a good English blend. Something with small(ish) amount of Latakia since I’ve not done will with it in the past. My wife would also appreciate something with a decent aroma as well. Keep up the great work, and let us know when you’ve found your EM replacement!

I have the falcon extra brown hunter, I bought one as I didn’t have a falcon in my pipe collection. And yes it definitely does give a dryer and cool smoke and I’m a briar man as a rule but what I like about this pipe is that it’s so light and I can continue to work with my hands and forget that the pipe is in my mouth as it’s so light and I can happily continue to smoke while getting my hands dirty. I’m actually smoking my mix of Samual Gawith cherry and vanilla 50/50 mix with Erinmore which is an excellent mix and such an enjoyable smoke. I have the rustic bowl on mine as it tends not to get too hot. And would I buy another well yes I suppose I would in time when this one gets past its best. Pipes are horses for courses what suits someone may not suit another but it’s all trial and error and with the falcon they are cheap enough to try without breaking the bank.

I have three of these: One like that, another twisted yellow, and an International. I am not a fan of the Falcon mouthpiece, though. It just feels like plasticky plastic. But exchanging the bowls is fun. I just like Falcon with them (EEEEE-EEEE-EEEE).

Bradley, I just watched this again, after rejuvenating my Falcon. It is still spot-on. And so is my earlier caveat; cleanliness is next to godliness. These pipes cannot be "seasoned," like a traditional briar. And whether you buy the Falcon "Dry Ring" or make your own, SOMETHING to absorb moisture is absolutely essential. They remind me most of a meerschaum, as far as flavor goes. Both are a bit of a pain in the ass, but the Falcon is less-so.

  • @jackbloom4744

An appealing instrument but I found the quality of smoking not equal to a good or even medium quality briar pipe. I guess that also the quality of briar itself plays a role. I prefer the bent shape. Happy new year, Bradley

Good review. Pretty much what I expected. I have a H. Wiebe radiator for almost 2 years now and enjoy it a lot. It's a new take on this classic concept. I think that the Wiebe radiator is a better pipe than the falcon, but alas I have yet to try a falcon pipe. @stuffandthings You should check out the Radiators if you get an opportunity. They have, however, become quite a bit more expensive than the Falcon system.

    AAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Bradley...all I can say is YOU ROCK BROTHER!!! I just recently found your channel and subscribed. All I can say is that I wish I had found your channel a couple of years ago. I have been an avid pipe/cigar smoker and firearms collector for 25 plus years. You do an absolutely, positively wonderful job with your reviews! Meticulous in your details and maybe even equally as important, you are absolutely hilarious! I truly love your sense of humor - it's completely in sync with my sense of humor and I often times find myself laughing out loud at some of the things that you say that are funny. Quite a few things that you say that amuse me are sometimes slightly nuanced, but that is what makes it great!! I'm curious to know if by chance you happen to have a background in acting or theater? Your personality strikes me as somebody who may have a background in acting. Regardlesd, keep up the great reviews and Happy 2018!!!

A Kirsten is equally good or even better. They have the same basic system (interchangeable bowls), but can be completely disassembled and washed out (NOT the bowls). The only problem is that the "O" rings wear out eventually and need to be replaced (if you can find them).

Just buy generic o rings from Lowes or Home Depot, it is what I've done with my estate Kirsten. Only need to find the right size. I've lost my package insert but I believe the size of the ones I've been using are 1/4".. possibly a little larger.

    • @user-Pied_Piper
      @user-Pied_Piper 6 років тому +1

Thanks for that tip! I never thought to actually measure them. I had assumed that the rings would be some bastard size that could only be obtained through Kirsten, ( so that they were exclusive and hence could charge more for them ). BTW, a new Kirsten pipe is a lot more expensive than a new Falcon, so, one has to take the cost benefit ratio into consideration.

Older Kirstens use a compression fitting on both ends. No need for O-rings. works fine for me. Just keep clean or they will corrode and stick. Made in Washington State since 1946, so i'm told.

I have one stem and two bowls. One thing I would stress is that with Falcons, cleanliness is next to Godliness. They tend to gunk-up faster than all-briars, which can cause problems with the threads, which results in a wet smoke. Regular cleaning with pipe cleaners dipped in Everclear is recommended. That aside, your assessment is spot-on. Falcons smoke cool and dry, as promised, but do not have depth of flavor.

(a year later) as an avid cob smoker I'd agree, but as far as traveling/camping this is fill that use a bit better.
I own 9 cobs and treat them like my briars, they smoke great, but those shanks can break out way too easily.
This being able to break down the way it does solves that problem, I also think a caked briar smokes better than a seasoned cob
