F is without doubt the hardest chord to play so far. Im 3 months in and this one stumps me like no other. Fmaj7 is OK but the bar chord version and muting the muted bottom 2 strings versions are very hard.
i am a disabled man... 57 years old... i never had a lesson in me life... i wish i had you as a guide in me early years. that said... i do hope you all understand the genius of this man.... thanks Justin
If you tune the E string to F : and the A string to Bflat you can Play- A minor D minor Bflat and variations of C major and G minor pretty easily using top 4 strings ( D G B E )..Slap on a capo and play in accending keys as you move up the guitar using the same chord shapes.. Thanks Justin Great lessons.
Thank you Justin. This really helps. I recently attempted a tabbed song that required a F#/D7 chord. You play the easy open D7 chord we all know but also play F# with thumb wrapped over the top of the neck onto the 6th string second fret. It feels like I'm breaking my wrist or causing carpel tunnel in my wrist. Needless to say I'm searching for an alternative chord. Craig Ewinger
I was struggling with this on acoustic but not so much on my Electric. I watched this again and noticed how the Pad of Justin’s 1st finger is higher up, pretty much touching the 3rd string . As the 2nd finger frets that 3rd string, one fret up, it doesn’t matters it takes precedence . Suddenly I can play them much more easily and way more relaxed than before.great teacher!
Great! Indeed, know what finger matters where. If you lift your middle finger, you play a minor instead of major so your index finger has more work. Try sliding over the complete shape to another fret to experience the difference; slightly shorter fret distance but also slightly less tension because you move to the middle of the string. | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Assistant
@@justinguitar Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated! I’m not finding it the easiest thing to do but the tips really help. Trying to get mini F good enough to move on to Module 10! It’s just annoying me that it’s so easy on my Telecaster yet my acoustic is inconsistent. Btw, the tip about sliding up frets is golden. I didn’t realise I could use this shape for other beautiful chords. And that Mini F minor sounds beautiful 😍 All the best!
Thank you thank you thank you for these videos!!!!! F chord really slowed down my progress and I've been super discouraged. I've been skipping classes and practice. I found your videos and they're helping so much. My guitar teacher is excellent but it's been great just to get another perspective and I'm finally landing that dang F chord
I have trouble with F chords and still not get c,ear sound yet, but will practice as your lesson see how it goes👍 thank you so much …I am listening to more of your lesson…
I'm actually strong enough to get the F bar chord to ring out. The problem is that I'm not nearly skilled enough (yet) to get my fingers into position without screwing up the rhythm. As usual, Justin saves the day!
Half the world away by Oasis is great for switching from C to Fmaj7 - an it incorporates a lot of the chords Justin's taught up until now, like A minor.
Thank you, Justin. I'm much older than most and probably have quit playing numerous times because of the flippin F chord. I was determined to learn how to play Hotel California. I hit a couple of F chords that were ok but not happy. I'm like that has got to be some tricks to this bar chord stuff. Yes I am a beginner and have been at it for 5 years. I run across your video. Bravo, well done. It's late but I will be hitting it again in the morning. I can't wait to watch this video again and try some of your suggestions. Awesome instruction.
Forget the bar chord for now and practice the mini f shown. I spent 2 years not learning any bar chord. The mini f is more practical in this position too . Good luck .
Thank you Justin, I’ve been trying to learn the @#$&*(“%=/; F cord on & off for 5O yrs (age 79) , congrats on your teaching methods ! Be proud of your talent for playing “git fiddle” it’s truly an amazing instrument 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks heaps for this lesson Justin ! I find the F chord and the G chord quite hard to play cause I got short thin fingers and small hand size ! So this lesson really helps me out ! Thank you so much for your help ! I find Barre chords far too hard and impossible to do ! So These Mini F chords are perfect for people like me to use for my songs ! Cheers mate ! :)
note for myself and others: 3:43 hmm i can’t get my middle and ring finger to touch in either C or Fmaj7. This may explain my struggle with chord changes when having to move these fingers together idk…
The FMaj7/C - I tend to mute the bottom E (with my thumb) and also the top E (with my index finger which is at an angle where it's pressing on the B string and damping the top E) when I use this - The verse of 'Life's been good' by Joe Walsh goes F, Em, Dm, C - and I find that using this form of F is the smoothest transition .
@@itsmorphed6416 horses for courses... having all variations of F in your armoury, incl. limiting the strum and the full barre makes for better playing. The reason I mentioned the verse of Life's Been Good, is because there is so much percussive strumming over all the dampened strings that it makes sense to keep the bottom E and top e damped down all the time
@@antmo1966 yeah sure it's up to yourself. But for a beginner I would teach thumb behind the neck to develop strength. Percussive strumming, for me , can also be done quite easily with the mini f too .
if anyone is having trouble playing these chords , your guitar action might be too high especially if it's been laying around for a while. Mine was and it was making it hard to play .
If you’re playing a song with mostly open chords, there’s no need to bar the F. These chords are much easier to go to, and in a lot of cases, sound better. I use them a lot.
I use the "short cut" Variation of F (F maj7) especially when a Song is in the Key of C. This means there are tons of C to F transitions & each are only a little skip away from one another not to mention same Hand Position. With a fast TEmpo and when only playing Chords (vs Fingerpicking), there is little difference in the sound.
Hi Justin, you are very good teacher. I play with classic guitar and so far have not managed F bar cord. I found mini F I can play with 4 fingers. There is no way my little finger can press 2 strings
for thr mini f , if you struggle with it maybe you should try to replace the little bar in the first fret and do it with your second and third finger - you will use your 4 fingers for this one, this shape is much easier for me
Having a really hard time with the mini f chord. Any other suggestions how to attempt it. I’m trying to do house of the rising sun which goes Am, C, D, F. Can’t pull off the F. None of the other F’s shown work. Any tips on thumb position, etc
Probably figured this out by now: When you lay your fingers sideways like Justin was showing, your index finger rolls away from its pad to its side which is more "boney." That "boneyness" allows the finger to press the B and E strings more firmly on the neck creating a clear tone.
If I'm not playing an F bar chord, I prefer playing the mini F. I like the way it sounds with the F note on the high E string added in. Playing the high E open in an F chord sounds off to me.
After months of practice, producing clean sound with F barre is no longer a problem for me - as long as I have enough time. BUT it's still a huge challenge to quickly transition into that shape from another chord. Anyone in the same boat? Anyone with advice?
justin lemme just say i love u and appreciate u sooo much for this! but but but mimi f chord is like way harder then regular f chord. anyways ily and like plz ur great
You'll get it eventually. When I was learning and got tired of not hearing the F ring out, I would change all the C, Am F, G songs into G, Em, C, D songs.

also if you damp the bottom E and Top E, this chord shape then becomes very movable up and down the fretboard
Nah to muting the e . Just the fith and strum smaller .

Is there an easy Fminor chord from one of the easy F chords ?
I am learning a song that goes F then Fminor. Thanks
I'm finding mini-F harder than the full barre chord!
Also what’s happening with me. I’ve gotten the barre chord waaaay more frequently than the mini.
Me too.
might just boil down to muscle memory?
if you've allready practiced the F I mean.
True
lol, same
I have learn c major E major and minor G. A minor and D major can I learn songs though still having trouble with switching chords
Good trick 👌

Two fingers anchored on the Fmaj7/c to C

I didn't expect barred chords to be so difficult. It will take time and patience.
For some reason barring the two thinnest strings on the mini barre chord is hard. The high e string never rings out for me
Probably figured this out by now: When you lay your fingers sideways like Justin was showing, your index finger rolls away from its pad to its side which is more "boney." That "boneyness" allows the finger to press the B and E strings more firmly on the neck creating a clear tone.

You will get it. Keep practicing.
I started tuning down to Eb that F ing F chord is easier in that tuning now I can almost do it in standard tuning remember not a race and have fun
Yes. The mini f is better for chord changes in this position. Use the Bar chord for fith fret etc.
The mini F is the regular F on a baritone ukulele
So it looks like the first finger works as an anchor between Fmaj7 and C
justin lemme just say i love u and appreciate u sooo much for this! but but but mimi f chord is like way harder then regular f chord. anyways ily and like plz ur great
3:35 what a cut!
I find playing mini F extremely difficult. I have big hands and getting them to that position is very difficult.
My hands are so small :( My fingers are short too. I’m 43 years old and always struggle to play
I need help with mini F :(
Christ I only just got comfortable with the C chord and now I gotta deal with this bastard of a chord 😭
You'll get it eventually. When I was learning and got tired of not hearing the F ring out, I would change all the C, Am F, G songs into G, Em, C, D songs.

Not good . Your messing with the mechanics of the chord making it more difficult to change to and from other chords.
it's impossible to use the 3rd finger to touch the fourth and fifth strings simultaneously for me....
is it weird thaT I actually find F barre chord eaiser?
I simply cannot mute to save myself. Whether it be C or any of the others. 4th month in and I’m still sounding like the 5yr old who grabbed dads bagpipes
took me three freaking months to master the f bar chord seriously..
congrats

Thats why its Called The "F"#@% Chord😎
Mini F chord doesn't help at all for me, I still can't get the 1st string to ring out
When you lay the fingers down sideways, your index finger will roll away from its pad onto its boney side. That side will press the string more firmly on the neck and cause the string to sound clearly.
@@happyguycmb2883 ah thanks for the advice but I got there in the end, I actually needed to raise the height of the string a bit 🤣
pov: ur in ur three years journey of playing guitar on and off and you wonder why you still suck at the F chord and Fmaj7 is not making the cut.
