Seeing you're excitement over the Alexseal and it's ease of use almost makes me want to scratch my boat just so i can repair it! Thanks for the vid Andy!
Thanks for another extremely informative, instructive video. I am just finishing up refinishing my boat with Alexseal and believe it is the best family of products of this nature on the market. I painted the hull in Sky blue with Arista blue for a boot stripe. The glossy finish is unbelievable and just rolling the paint on worked out very well. One thing that I have done in the past with Interlux Perfection and it seems to work as well with the Alexseal is that if I mix up too much, I can store the leftover paint in the refrigerator for several days and it still works fine. Never ran into any issues doing this and with the super high cost of these paints it saves on what would have been thrown away money. I have also had very good luck with the Totalboat fairing that you recommended and am going to try their buffing compound. Always look forward every Sunday to your new video.
Thanks for the video. Alex seal looks like it might be worth giving it a go. On a lighter note I’m down in Florida where the temperature and humidity is off the scale. Watching you dressed in bibbed jeans, a sweat shirt and an undershirt while working in the shop is killing me!
Hi Andy, I am a professional detailer here in Europe. You should try FG400 from Menzerna. It is a Buffing compound, easily removes P1000/1500 from Gelcoat. But the best thing is you don't have to polish after even od dark colors. No fillers, no Silicone. What you see is what you have, no masking effect. Even forget wool pads, hard foam is more than enough or even softer. You can use super finish pads with the same compound if you just need to do a finish job. And finally no dust at all. And if you have some money to spend you should look for Rupes iBrid nano 1 inch or 2 inc orbital movement, rotary movement, polishing, sanding, cleaning machine. P.S. nice work. You are an inspiration. Because of you, I started to do small GC repairs too. Thanks
Well done! As an old Alcraft user I can appreciate the labor involved with a blend. Alexseal looks very interesting. I'm redoing a Sturdee Skiff transom and raising it to longshaft height for my next project. Since it will be a complete refinish I've decided to go with the Alexseal. I'm in Rhode Island so Jamestown Dist. has been my go to source for over 30 years. They are the best source for marine repair products, both glass and wood, I have ever found. I don't even look around anymore. They always get my first call. Your introduction of Alexseal has been excellent and honest. Great channel here. I recomend it often.
Andy, painting is like voodoo shizzle to me. You hae given me the hope that i won't pooch my Alexseal job on my trimaran. From the bottom of my heart Andy....thank you for your mentoring lesser men like me to attempt magic.
I admire how Andy uses skill and knowledge to replace spending tons of money on tools and materials that are just not needed. Practicality is genius. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are, right now.
Ao1968 Andy also has some expensive tools, Festool is not cheap, though if you watch AvE’s channel he takes apart a Festool saw and it is very disappointing that they use bushings instead of bearings, and low temp melt, cheap plastic instead of high temp melt, high quality plastic.
I have that same scaffold, like you, it's turned into a shop workbench, shelf, hanger...... I like that it is also rollable and can be stacked. Thanks for the vid, I am going to be working on a '91 21' Fitz center console floor rebuild. Looks like I'll be using this airbrush on small spots for touch ups and the paints for the main floor re gel coat.
If you were planning on using Ply and wanted to bond that to the original inner hull, would you use poly resin after removing the gelcoat. Thank you. Brilliant work, as always, a true artist
I have the same brand airbrush... 2 of them, actually - and one of them is an Awata copy. After a little tune up and polishing, it preforms as good as my old Awata. For the money, they're hard to beat!
I use a wool pad with aqua buff compound on awl craft paint every day my friend. Especially with blends, and have never had a problem. Even with jet blacks and aristo blues
Perfect Andy. I to purchased the same air brush for 2 small repairs in my carbon composite Farrier F22 Trimaran. I have not used it yet but I"m glad it works for you so it should work for me.
I have a question for you... i would like to gelcoat my little sailboat but here’s the tricky part i would like to blend two colors together... the plan is to have the half of the hull deep blue, and the bottom light grey... no traight lines, on an averadge of 3 inchs passing from the blue to the light grey, the hole idea is to make the boat look like a shark, bottom grey, sides deep blue...
Hey there - seeing how you use that double action airbrush you'd probably do just as well if not better with a single action. Not much point in going double action if all you're gonna do is pull the button back to full open on every pass. Also, pro-tip for any viewers here planning on getting an airbrush is to get a small sized airbrush hose, and adapt it to your main air hose. SOOOOOOOOO much easier than spraying with that full weight hose and quick connect attached.
I'm impressed with how well you were able to show the process on camera. I've taken pictures of glossy surfaces and it is so hard to get it to show up! I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the effort you put into making this, the glossy white must have been a real pain to film!
Hi, Are there pigments available for base white paint similar to colour matching for gelcoats ? I have come across a boat (Jeanneau Prestige 38s) that needs repairs to the hull side but the gelcoat surface has weathered so much to a "white" similar to a paint finish, and blending the gel repairs in reveals the under colour which is a strong yellow. I am looking at a spray repair but as you know the weathered off whites are all so different and I need to know if pigment colour matching is possible and available. Many thanks John (UK)
Great content. I've just bought a jet ski with blown motor which I can fix but more worryingly is the hull at the front has worn through with previous owners beaching. By worn I mean to the point that there's holes. Challenge excepted. Though tips always welcome.
Look up, (Airbrush Air Horse Quick Connecter) on eBay, and get a thinner air hose it will make it much more pleasant to use. I have an Iwata eclipse side cup and love it for Art. For general use, I don't think you'd notice much difference. But for very fine lines and nice out spray more money makes a dif. Also when changing needles you also change the nozzle size. and you can also polish the needle for detail. again not necessary for big jobs like this. I also use a cheapo brush for staining and small jobs like this. even cheaper than the one you got.
I like wet sanding gel coat with the rotex 150 speed 3-4 in the aggressive mode and I will take it up to 5000 grit with 3m trizact then the 3m wax. It’s super fast forget the cutting compounds.
Would be possible to hire you as a consultant only for a boat project? Mostly giving the steps to follow and the material to be used! Please let me know
Very cool. Painted my catboat’s topsides with Perfection. Plan on removing some scratches and areas where the paint failed, and hope to be doing this fall or spring. Just an awesome little video. Only question is whether to top the snow white interlux with a glaze coat. Keep it up Andy.
Do you have an approximate cost on Alexseal products? They don't seem to list any prices (even an MSRP)? Also, it looks like their topcoat is a polyurethane single stage, how do you think this compares (strength/resistance wise) to a base coat/clear coat paint?
I witnessed professional air brushing of gelcoat years ago by a dock worker in San Diego, CA. Liquid styrene gets air quality people excited, but there is a magic ratio in a temperature and humidity window to do new quality or better beautiful work, or much easier, make a terrible mess with toxic fumes?
Thanks Andy, I have really enjoyed this series with the Alexseal paint. I have a large painting project in the near future and I am definitely using Alexseal. How do you tint this paint different colors?
Hello Andy love your videos I’m in the presses of starting a sailboat project ( my first one EVER ) and found your channel , I was studying gelcoat until I found the vid you did on gelcoat verses paint and realize paint may be better ? has anyone told you ,you would make a great instructor ? You have an amazing amount of knowledge and know how to inspire people , it would be an amazing experience to work around you for a few months . Thanks for the great content
Not gonna lie, cry or tell you any sad stories but another great video!!! This is just what I needed for my next, next project. Thanks for all your videos as I have learned a lot from any I have watched and the first place I come to and check before a new project!!!!
I Have dark halos all over my boat. it looks like the gelcoat had bubbles which were sanded and recoated with gelcoat. Can I use this technique to cover the halos?
Love the videos. Really impressed with AlexSeal. I'm looking to buy some top-side paint. Do you suggest where to buy it? Also, is it necessary to use marine-grade plywood for stringer rebuilds or just dry Burch(or similar).Been watching for years. Thanks for all your help/work...
Andy why did you have to shoot primer on the repair? You didn't take it down to glass did you? You couldn't have just use the first coat of paint as a high build?
Being so hard, do you think it would work on a timber boat or just crack? Not sure a painted surface microns thin has the same mechanical properties as a mm thick gel coat. Hard = cracking at that thickness if there is any displacement in the surface. One property of paint is cosmetic and the other is way more than that...though I know you know that. Good videos btw. Not having a go at you but just want to bring in other factors than are relevant to anyone who owns a boat that is continually flexing (working)
Hi boatworks Is there a email that I can send a few photos of my bass boat gelcoat clear layer condition . Is a 1978 ranger boat . I wanted to make it look better but I don't know anything about the steps to take . I have been watching all your videos but still not sure how to start . What do you use after you use the total buff ? Do you use some type of wax or is the total buff the last step ?
Hey brother thanks for the demo, but am i missing something? I'm waiting for the boat to get finished, but i don't see any episodes anymore. Please let me know if I've missed something.....Not that i don't appreciate what we get every Sunday.
I don't own a hole in the water to throw my money into but have been thinking of trying something similar to fix some scratches on a car. I don't know why airbrushes aren't used for these kinds of repairs more often, I guess I might find out ;-) Great video.
Andy I have a comment for you you might be able to help me please I just want you to know that we’ve watched pretty much all your videos and we thank you for the knowledge that you provide to all of us well recently I had my boat painted with awl craft paint The boat was painted and cured for about a month we were about to go out fishing and we stopped to pour gas unfortunately some gas over spilled and it caused the paint to melt into a mush I don’t think that this is supposed to happen because who’s gas hasn’t over spilt it Happens to the best of us but I just paid so much money and I don’t think the gas should have done that to the paint job please give us some of your knowledge some of your input we really need your help with this thank you so much
Hey thanks for all the great vids i have learned alot from you. Could you do a video on rolling Total Boats wet edge top side paint. And what your thoughts are on there paint .Thanks
Very little. From what I saw it is a bit more technical to apply (and it's a spray only application I believe). Also it's quite a bit more expensive by the time you figure in the paint and clearcoat. Probably best over smaller highlight areas rather than an entire hull IMO :-)
Try festool MPA6000 and the 3M yellow foam pad. And for protection and even more shine give petzoldts liquid glass a try. (Warning - it may change your world like alexseal)
I think you will find the cheap airbrush won’t have solvent proof seals and won’t last long. Get a new valve for the iwata and get another 20yrs out of it
Great video Andy. I am going to look into the total boat products. I have been in the marine industry for a a number of years and you are right. New products come out all the time and they need to be looked at.
It amazes me that Alexseal is being praised so highly for being able to roll, spray, touch-up and buff it. Are other marine paints not able to do this? I'm old school and do a lot of automotive work still with oil based enamels. I have also used these same enamels on marine applications with success. Even the cheapest Walmart Rustoleum you can find will roll, spray, touch-up and buff just fine. They just don't hold up to UV for long. If you are bothering with color sanding (cut and buffing), you can lay it down with a aerosol can and it will come out awesome. So I am not surprised by the airbrush results. Is Alexseal, by chance, enamel?
enamel sorta just means ‘shiny’ but I think you are equating the term with “oil based” aka linseed oil which isn’t necessarily linseed oil or “varnish” based. I haven’t looked it up but I imagine it’s a type of polyurethane marine paint which coalesces and “air cures” in addition to actual ‘drying’ by solvent evaporation. Most boat paints are two-part cure either by base paint + activator components to cure (different than drying) or base paint plus air(oxygen) to cure. Look up the spec sheet and SDS on their site and it will tell you what it is.
I'm now a distributor for Alexseal and can ship anywhere in the Continental US! Check it out! www.millerboatworks.com

Great videos. I am planning to spray gelcoat my M 16 sailboat hull. How much gel coat do I need? How is quantity calculated. Figuring three coats.
That's impressive! That's a talent that I don't have, you are the paint master!

Always great info Andy, so glad I found your channel! Not working on a boat but another fiberglass project and your help is invaluable.
What an amazing video, 1st the 1990 boat then the 1971 Corvette!

Great demo. Let us know how the new airbrush works out over time.
The paint won't be the problem, it's more about if it would be possible to paint.
Really enjoying this series on Alexseal, now, you wanna move closer to me and help me with my boat's transom and stringers? Oh, and paint too! 🤣

How can we fix little Cracks in the old gelcoat before applying new gelcoat by airbrush? With thin primer?
Would be possible to hire you as a consultant only for a boat project?
Mostly giving the steps to follow and the material to be used!
Please let me know
Maybe I missed it….wet sanding with soapy water….never tried it. What kind of soap? Dish soap work?
Thanks for the help and information
VERY informative. Thanks!

Go Andy Go! Get that Silver Play Button :)
Great, now I have to fix my boat scratches myself... thanks for making it seem so easy.
Hi,can I draw or design with airbrush using the gelcoat??
Do you have an approximate cost on Alexseal products? They don't seem to list any prices (even an MSRP)?
Also, it looks like their topcoat is a polyurethane single stage, how do you think this compares (strength/resistance wise) to a base coat/clear coat paint?
Thank you for sharing the invaluable info. I am currently restoring\ rebuilding\ repairing my 18ft 1973 delta
I/O. Bruce. Phx az.
Great video! Very helpful! Can you use awlgrip and imron in an air brush as well?
Question : can you air brush gelcoat on a center console?
lefty k I have used a Preval aerosol sprayer for minor gelcoat repairs. Mix gelcoat with Duratec 1:1 ratio.

Hi what the make of your sand bored? Is fancy
I think i will be using this paint on my boat. My star custom cabin cruiser looks awful. How good is it for a trailered boat
I use Alexseal DIY and learned from Spencer Yachts in Wanchese N.C. Home of Hot Tuna and several others.Good job Andy

Andy why did you have to shoot primer on the repair? You didn't take it down to glass did you? You couldn't have just use the first coat of paint as a high build?
Primer aids adhesion plus (I don’t know his exact purpose) it indicates when you’ve sanded to the ‘original’ paint surface.
Andy your ok I learned a lot over the years

omg just when i was about to buy a bunch of 3m stuff to do this on my boat, too bad i cant buy total boat in EU
Hi, Great video as usual, what is the coverage of this paint, whats the best way to work out how much you need...? Thanks..
I always learn a bunch of things from your videos
Hi boatworks Is there a email that I can send a few photos of my bass boat gelcoat clear layer condition . Is a 1978 ranger boat . I wanted to make it look better but I don't know anything about the steps to take . I have been watching all your videos but still not sure how to start . What do you use after you use the total buff ? Do you use some type of wax or is the total buff the last step ?
Thanks for another great video.
I'd like to see you do a test of the $5 Preval sprayers for paint and gelcoat.
You had previously used petit paints and was wondering how how the petit easypoxy with hardener additive compares.
easypoxy has it's place but it's not a fair comparison between the two paints. Alexseal is much more expensive but you get what you pay for ;-)!
Andy is this for above or below or both on the waterline?
Hey brother thanks for the demo, but am i missing something? I'm waiting for the boat to get finished, but i don't see any episodes anymore. Please let me know if I've missed something.....Not that i don't appreciate what we get every Sunday.
Can we use this to fix scratches on a car?
Why did I not subscribe yet to Andy's Channel? Very well done content . Fair and balanced evaluations. Thank you.
I don't own a hole in the water to throw my money into but have been thinking of trying something similar to fix some scratches on a car. I don't know why airbrushes aren't used for these kinds of repairs more often, I guess I might find out ;-)
Great video.
Have you ever tried farecla compound
well done Andy, it is quite a craftsmanship. :-)
So you can use your shop compressor ? or does it have to be turned down some what ! Thanks
You always have to pre-gun set max pressure so realistically any sufficient air source can be used with the gun
Yes take it out for a sail. An opportunity like that is too good to miss.
Isnt that the base / clear? Do ya clear it now the buffing is done?
no clear needed!
Your the best! Thanks
Fine job I liked this.
Gracias x el video felicitaciones entonces esta pintura seria de la misma calidad de la awlgrip
Awesome!!! Thanks so much!!
Total Boat products, yess...
getting ready to paint my complete boat. Have you worked with the Alexseal metallics?
Very little. From what I saw it is a bit more technical to apply (and it's a spray only application I believe). Also it's quite a bit more expensive by the time you figure in the paint and clearcoat. Probably best over smaller highlight areas rather than an entire hull IMO :-)
How do I match the paint to the gelcoat.
a great test thanks
Where are you based? Great videos by the way.
Try festool MPA6000 and the 3M yellow foam pad.
And for protection and even more shine give petzoldts liquid glass a try. (Warning - it may change your world like alexseal)
Good job
Thanks, look's good.
would doing these repair Demos in a Black Color show better on video?
Wish I had time for time management classes?
I think you will find the cheap airbrush won’t have solvent proof seals and won’t last long. Get a new valve for the iwata and get another 20yrs out of it
Very nice!
Che grana usi come carta vetrata
Great video Andy. I am going to look into the total boat products. I have been in the marine industry for a a number of years and you are right. New products come out all the time and they need to be looked at.
I had that problem before found out I wasn't getting the little push button in the hole.
Coast Airbrush probably has parts to repair your iwata.
It amazes me that Alexseal is being praised so highly for being able to roll, spray, touch-up and buff it. Are other marine paints not able to do this? I'm old school and do a lot of automotive work still with oil based enamels. I have also used these same enamels on marine applications with success. Would you recommend total boat compound to go over an entire finish of Alexseal that was brushed on to get a mirror finish.
